DRIVECLUB The Drenched Forests of Canada

I know it's an arcady racer but... the wet road looked so real that I got little scared by watching them drive this wet track.

Its arcade racer with real world simulation in everything except from handling & damage which also 1:1 but provides some assist/cosmetic damage to make the game fun and easy to everyone.

I remember Evo say something about how snow dynamically builds up and melts away...so does that mean we can set a race to start off snowing, then gradually change to sunny, and watch the snow that has built up on surfaces melt away in realtime?

If so -

He already said he won that fight. Music is off by default :)

That is news to me!! I think it's the right decision!

That hard to work cell architecture train Sony first party into graphic wizard. ND, GG, SMM, Evo, even Sucker punch step up their games.
Japan studio need to catch up!

Internal studios must share tech and techniques they made with the other studios, so it always seemed odd that with the western studios making huge advancements last gen that Japan studios always seemed behind and could never match them. Hope they can step up their production output this gen, specially building upon the tech the western studios have already shown off

Their blog post says yes, and the roads dry based on temperature and height of the sun.

This is what's missing from the Horizon 2 rain effect and why this looks so spectacular. The raindrops are actually rolling up the hood due to the speed of the car. They are static in Horizon 2, which makes them look nice, but ruins the cockpit view when they don't act like normal raindrops.

The streaks seem like a pretty simple effect too, static normal map that just gets faded in and out at different places over time.

That's not including the individual drops which probably need an animated normal map combined with that one.

My god, a racing game that finally has better weather effects than PGR4 after all these years. Someone please tell me it has city tracks, night racing and the Nurburgring - if so I may finally have a replacement for PGR4.

This looks incredible. What sets the graphics apart from previous generations, and I think many people forget this aspect, isn't really a jump in polygons or other things that are immediately obvious to the eye, it's the scale and the immersion. This game's scale is such a step ahead. Mountains are appropriately huge and distance fog is done just right, it actually feels like driving through a real location. And beyond the rain effects being extremely good, it's the overall mood that just FEELS right. This looks stunning. I can't wait for more racing games.

Maybe Playground simply hadn't implemented it or the drive to achieve 1080p meant they had to cut corners?

I really hope it's the former. Rain not streaking/rolling up the hood will be extremely hard to ignore after seeing this.

especially when I am pretty certain PGR4 had a similar effect?

Incredible. Seriously AMAZING.

I'm floored, completely overwhelmed.

How can graphics be this good, so soon on the PS4 life cycle? My mind can't just comprehend this...

I wish they took out the HUD for this one. It looks so damn real that HUD actually hurted the immersion for me.

Sony needs to just play a 1 minute clip of this game in motion for a commercial, and all will be well. Just nothing but the sound of the car, driving through some crazy ass weather.

It did. I'm positive that Horizon's weather is going to look more convincing by the time the game is ready for release, Playground have proven that they know how to produce gorgeous visuals, and they can't possibly be expecting that simple rain beads are going to cut it. Still, I wish we'd stop talking about Horizon in a Driveclub thread.

they can't market this kind of ad during launch though because the weather update is not a day 1 patch

My bad. I didn't mean for it to turn into anything or derail the thread. I was just comparing rain effects and why one looked significantly better than the others, which I thought was fair game...

Anyway, enough of comparing the two.

Nailed it. The beauty of DC, and feel free to argue differently, is that everything looks very, very close to natural/real. The cars don't seem to hover over the track. They don't look like polygonal shapes sitting atop other polygons. They seem like legitimate OBJECTS that respond to the laws of physics at least semi-accurately, thus lending them credence and an aura of authenticity I've yet to see in many games.

I think PD should really re-consider those non-premium cars in GT7. They're going to stick out pretty bad unless they do some seriously heavy lifting in order to bring them up to snuff.
