July 2014 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes August 12th

Things are generally flat, if not a little down because it's mid-summer and nothing exciting has come out. The people who held off on buying an Xbox Three in May bought it in June, so those numbers return to normal (I don't think the price drop + Kinect removal has changed its popularity). The Wii U continues riding its popularity wave a bit longer, although it's died down a bit.

Last month's Wii U weeklies would put it at 112k. You've lowballed that one by about 5,500 per week.

First ever prediction. Kind of nervous. Sure to be laughably wrong.

My logic:
  • 4-week reporting period so down 20% overall.
  • PS4 up slightly from Last of Us and Destiny/E3 momentum
  • XB1 down slightly after pent-up demand Kinectless sku satiated last month
  • Wii U up slightly from E3 momentum and Mario Kart
  • 3DS down slightly with no big software

Ps4 remained consistent, as it seems it will stay. It's kind of interesting seeing that we've gotten more Destiny bundle preorders, but the system hasn't really lost any steam.

XB1 is not setting the world on fire, but at least the districts I checked it's still selling, even if it's not really great numbers. We're getting fewer shipments that last longer. Most of my stores are still working off their first shipments of the kinectless bundle.

WiiU is hard to gauge... it feels like it is doing better in some stores, but it's not a universal upswell.

Vita remains mostly impossible to get solid stock... but it sells out as soon as it arrives! I asked our Sony rep, and he was noncommittal about a straight answer, as though even he's not sure.

Hm interesting. You find the Wii U is doing better in some stores compared to before MK8? Better than June? I'm wondering how the $260 M&L Wii U deal worked out for Best Buy. I at least know 2 friends who got a Wii U because of the deal, and the third found it sold out for that price.

If US PSN ratings are anything to go by (as of this writing):

ISS: 20,596
BF4: 18,972
WD: 16,914
TLOUR: 16,667 <--

maybe people are more compelled to rate it due to its status.
