Eh, it might be smart. Using the coloured dots as an identifier could help them with their retarded naming schemes in the future.

It sure is!

By the way, talking of amiibo... I wonder if there'll be any 3DS game taking advantage of that this year, in Japan obviously.

Obviously Smash; aren't Amiibo slated to be released this holiday when the U version comes out? Amiibo aren't locked to system after all...

I'm pretty sure they have already stated out of the two Smash only Wii U version supports Amiibo. I guess they could patch a support in but I doubt it. They would have stated that if that was the case.

I think they said initially the Wii U one only supports amiibos but support will be patched in.

I don't remember that. Do you have a link? All I know is that officially Nintendo has stated that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad and Yoshi's Woolly World will support Amiibos.

I think they mentioned an amiibo peripheral at E3. It'll be released in 2015, however.

Edit: Yeah, maybe I misunderstood your statement.

...hate me...
I wonder if the cartridge slot is prepared to take exclusively shaped cartridges that won't fit into older 3DSs. Like a double tabbed cartridge.

I doubt they'd need to. It was kind of necessary in a time when you didn't have an OS built into the system so that people knew why their game wasn't loading, but now the older 3DS can just say "Only compatible with NEW 3DS" in their options.

Well of course they're going to patch the game to add Amiibo support. They're going to need a game to go along with the peripheral, and so far, only major 3DS title for 2015 is STEAM. I'd be surprised if there was amiibo for that one.

... Damn, just realised that with the NFC reader in the NN3DS, Nintendo will be able to update the 3DS OS to allow use of SUICA cards!

so we went from this:

to this:

I swear sometimes I wonder who is in charge of the logo/branding of these consoles.

You act like the average person can't google "Nintendo 3DS differences." This is 2014. Besides that, most moms are buying their kids phones and tablets, not handhelds.

They're just trying to wring the last drop of blood out of the DS logo because they're going to drop the brand and dual screens for their next handheld.

:^)

Wouldn't surprise me at all. Nintendo OS handheld & console having a unified brand like Famicom, Game Boy, DS or Wii makes some sense.

This... though I'm not sure Nintendo will get rid of the dual screen design. I don't think Nintendo is planning on dropping BC with it's portable systems.

They could go one large tablet like screen. Like 2DS without the plastic casing dividing the screen. Maybe how they handle DS VC on Wii U will give us some idea?

Controls might be an issue then though, unless they go for some weird Wonderswan solution.

Beyond that, wasn't Apple's new iPad just called the new iPad? Google did this too with the Nexus 7 (2014) and Nexus 7 (2013).

Yeah, going by the name people will see the name and they won't ask "What is this" because the name tells them, it's the New 3DS. What they will ask is "What's new" and then they will immediately put out their phone right there in the store and find out what's new in like a minute or two. Or their child will be with them and pick it out and if they aren't and mom makes the mistake and gets the wrong 3DS(if they are even stocked at the same time) then they can just return it and get the right one.
People really exaggerate the stupidity of the general consumer a lot.

Before I read your last sentence, I was going to reply with "you're giving consumers far too much credit" lol

I believe it's a little bit wider, but the screens are the same size
Both revisions are slightly bigger. The XL retains the same screen size while (as explained in the comparison above) the original 3DS sees a size increase for the screen.

Brilliant move by NIntendo to make the face plates N3DS exclusive, since the XL model seems to be the most popular one in Japan. Maybe now the sales are spread out more even. Besides this, the N3DS seems the best option because is in the middle ground of screen size/pixel density in comparison to the rest of the new and preious models.

At this point, wouldn't it be the perfect step to announce that the new 3ds can double as a Wii U gamepad? It has all the buttons and sticks necessary.

0.00000000000000001% chance of that happening. Maybe Nintendo will allow N3DS as controller, but no way in hell they're going to replace the GamePad. Especially with so many features missing.

Yeah, a bit disappointing, truth be told, though it's not really that big a deal for me.

One thing I like about this new model is that, unlike the DSi and the 3DS, they went ahead with the XL model right off the bat.

Hopefully, their next handheld is the same, though I'm afraid they'll just keep the XL for later : /

In apperance. But remeber the difference in screen sizes and aspect ratios is substantial. What this potentially could lead to is a bigger emphasis in cross platform interaction, the thing is Nintendo had an opportunity with the Wii/DS in the post GC days but they chose not to. Probably due to their limited resources.

New 3DS can't act as a gamepad because it uses 2.4ghz wifi unlike gamepad which uses 5ghz.
Unless Nintendo hided something in their spec sheet, it's not happening.

Just saw haziq post XD

Yea, there's also the included hardware video decoder inside the Gamepad. Including a Wii U bundle with the N3DS instead of the Gamepad is outside any real possibilities.

Like i said earlier this coulpd potentially allow cross platform play. And also a way to get Dual Gamepad gameplay for certain games since is more plausible for a person to drag a N3DS as an extra controller than a second Wii U pad.

I'm torn. I'm super hyped and totally buying a N3DS but my particular situation makes this super suck. I recently smashed my top screen on my XL on a road trip and was hoping to replace it with the new refurbished Zelda XL's, but with a new model on the way, that seems silly. This means i'm pretty much missing the entire fall lineup of current model games :(

Furthermore, we've only had Blue NXL and Black NXL revealed so far, with a red Smash NXL in time for the japanese release. Here's hoping we have some more options available stateside. I could maybe bum my bro's xl off of him this winter, but that also means no mobile smash between the two of us.

Either way i'm super hyped, and i'm excited to get the smaller one in my hands to see if i decide to go that route this time around.

VERY interesting...
Not happening but interesting.

Nintendo could throw us a bone an enable Wii U remote play if they wanted, but possibly at 30 fps.

The advantage is that you could play Zombi U and Nintendo Land on the N3DS. BUt the games that render different views on both screens are rare.

I don't think it'll happen either, but I do think we'll see far more Wii U/3DS connectivity with the New 3DS.

Btw, my prediction powers still have some juice left XD

http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=108425892

Saw a post sugesting that a 3DS redesign is somewhat implausible to happen. On the other hand it seems quite counter productive for Nintendo not to do one.

For me the most obvious route is doing a model between the old one and XL. The hook could be a second circle pad and some extra hardware improvements to better handle the OS and Miiverse.

The slight input method boost could allow easier porting of PS2/Wii level type of game asuring a more stable flow of releases.

A redegin (a competent one of course) has the added advantage of selling to the base that already has the device and is interested in an upgrade.

The 3DS has a very strong position from know till the end of the year. After that the only good move i see Nintendo doing is launching a redesign before the first half of 2014, that'll ensure a continuation of strong sales for the device coming to 2015.

Not bad for someone that isn't an insider.

I saw someone make this on my Twitter feed. It seems like a likely scenario, somewhat.

Not sure of this happening. If the very few things I've heard about the QoL are accurate, this move would serve as an interesting precursor. However, I'm more inclined to think the new handhelds will have a controller function, like the PS4-Vita relationship.

Is a matter of resources Haziq. In the Wii days a Nintendo that was more financially secure and in control of both the hanheld and home console markets didn't have the resources to tackle cross platform interaction.

Compare the above to a Nintendo that has some years losing money, has a sinking home console, has a nose diving portable one, is working on an unified OS along with both the future handheld and home platforms. To on top of all this expect them to work in projects that leaverage both existing platforms at the same time is quite unlikely.

Is kind of sad since there could be some really interesting stuff taking advanatge of both platforms.
