Super Smash Bros. for 3DS Review Thread | One more week

USGamer - 4/5

Given the technical limitations of the Nintendo 3DS, Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco have done an admirable job with this port. At its core, Super Smash Bros. is both a loving tribute to Nintendo and a surprisingly deep fighter, and though it hasn't changed much over the years, its appeal is strong as ever on the Nintendo 3DS. The solo experience is admittedly lacking, but as a multiplayer game, it remains a delight.

GamesBeat - 97/100

You can never tell how great a fighting game will really be until the public has time to master it, but Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has everything it needs to finally get the competitive community to move on from Melee. The new characters are excellent, and the gameplay is smooth, fast, and exciting.

I do wonder how some of the mechanical changes will impact the competitive scene. You can now air-dodge as many times as you want, and you can no longer hold on to a ledge as a way of keeping your opponent from getting back on a stage (they now simply take you place on the ledge). These aren’t necessarily good or bad things, but they are different. I’m excited to see how it shakes up the tournament scene.

But even if you’re a more casual Smash fan, you’ll love everything that the 3DS version offers. It’s a perfect handheld iteration of one of Nintendo’s greatest franchises.

Sounds convincing! Still a bit on the fence about the 3DS version. November isn't that far away. But I love the demo

Great scores....but LOL @ Gamespot´s 8/10 .

Not that the score is bad or anything, but that seems to be their default score for...like..every Nintendo game.

I'll admit, I laughed when I saw GameSpot gave it 8/10.

Great scores, about what I expected after playing the demo and watching gameplay vids. I'm glad SSB for 3DS managed to work out just fine, Ice Climbers or not.

I think this game is a technical marvel for the 3DS. It shouldn't be playing a game like this at constant 60fps and Nintendo pulled it off.

I don't know, a lot of this reads like "It's a 9 because it's on 3DS, on Wii U it'll be a 10".
Which is an ok standpoint I guess but still weird. It seems to be the same game with HD graphics and some different stages on Wii U and I get the couch multiplayer thing but still.

I kinda expected it. They have no excuse to give the Wii U version an 8
Unless they lower the score because its too similar to the 3DS version

Some of these sites will give the Wii U version a full point advantage.

Rightfully so.

Lol.

I mean, me and my friend were able to have local battles just fine, but I imagine that won't always be the case.

The fact that MP may be unreliable even locally cements my Wii U purchase. The novelty of a portable Smash will wear off for me, I will eventually sucumb to what I will consider the full experience. I will, of course, enjoy the 3DS version too though. Can't wait.

Yeah, it's a pretty impressive technical feat. From what I've read, the 3DS basically shuts down everything to free up the extra memory needed (which is why you can't use MiiVerse).

Much respect to GameSided for publishing a dual review by a series specialist. I'm not a competitive Smash player but this is exactly the kind of practice I always hoped to see in the genres I took seriously, where the reviews in the general enthusiast press, who play for breadth rather than depth, were completely worthless to me and unable to comment on mechanics with any real specificity. Commissioning a competitive player to review the game for other competitive players sets a strong precedent.

I have two copies of the game pre-ordered, one for me and one for my brother, and I spent more time with the demo than I'd like to admit but I don't think it's hard to see why the Wii U version is better in pretty much every single aspect except portability.

Yeah, I just don't know about this one. I played the demo and while it translated better than I imagined, it still felt like a step back in every way.

it still felt like a step back in every way.

Especially significant ways like roster size.

I'm still confused as to why people expect the first handheld smash to somehow go toe-to-toe with the last console-level smash experience.

Having a game release on console & handheld and having the handheld version actually being a legitimate game itself is already impressive.

Could you both please give a translation of the verdict, conclusion, final word, etc?

The portuguese review:

Plus:
- great gameplay
- huge amount of content
- Competent online
- Soundtrack is marvelous
- The graphics are great as is the performance

Cons:
- Lack of online options
- Playing on a small screen (OG 3DS) can get difficult to follow the action

the final paragraph concludes:

"Super Smash bros for 3ds isn't treated like an afterthought, it's everything that you can expect from the series: brilliant game, extremely polished, loaded with content for hours on end, made with love and respect for the series of its respective characters. It's smash bros, it's amazing and portable, what more do you need?"

Finally got to play the demo for the first time last night, and I was very impressed with it. I didn't expect it to be that good on the 3DS.

Wait both ign and gamespot show the dk stage without dk rap but some generic song and dk country song? does this mean its gone?

Eurogamer says that if you remove the items and Nintendo stuff, you have a mediocre fighting game. Oh dear oh dear. Feel like we've been playing different games the last few weeks.

Competitive model: 7.5/10
While this number is subject to change as the metagame evolves, the game in its current state is a viable competitive title. However, it's certainly not without problems. Smash Bros 3DS allows players to be safe with very little effort, and until players find a way to breach rolls and dodges competitive play eventually will be dominated by characters who can safely pressure their opponents with projectiles or large hitboxes. This game is a strong improvement from Brawl, but players and tournament organizers alike should to experiment with new ways to balance offensive and defensive play. As it stands, defensive play is decidedly stronger.

I have no idea what the point of reviewing it for the 'competitive' model when the metagame hasn't evolved. Makes no sense to do so.

Why on earth would you remove the items and Nintendo stuff? Do you remove the items when playing and reviewing Mario Kart? Do you remove the Nintendo stuff when playing and reviewing Hyrule Warriors?

Jesus.

I don't honestly think the Eurogamer man has any idea what he's talking about.

Lag in local matches is worrisome and disappointing, I noticed it in the demo while playing 1vs1 but thought it would get fixed in the final version.

If the 3DS version of this game is getting such good reviews then I can only image the Wii U version getting even better scores.

It's weird, I have had zero lag online in many matches, it's just 4 player matches around the globe that caused it for me. Haven't tried local though.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
A reviewer was complaining about having to unlock characters--a feature that has been in every Smash Bros game?

Please. I'll never understand that argument. Unlockable characters give huge replay value to single-player modes and helps you get accustomed to other characters as well. Not every player wants to solely play online competitively.
