Kingdom Hearts 3 is now using Unreal Engine 4

Pessimists: This is GOOD news. SE need to focus on good game products, not technology. They no longer have the ability to make tech. FFXV needs to switch too. It shows that things are changing there.

I feel UE4 is actually really strong at this kind of aesthetic. And hey, they're finally getting use out of that group license.

I'm sure it'll look great. Here's an example of a very stylized UE4 game.

Someone who used to work at S-E (I think he was part of the Luminous team?) mentioned something at the end of last year about how Luminous was basically dead or something, and that the company would be switching to Unreal.

Wow, that's crazy. Thanks.

Last time they used the Unreal Engine for consoles, the mess known as The Last Remnant happened.

This game is gonna be such a mess technically.

Epic has gotten better about support since then.

I think epic even has a Japanese studio now for the main reason of supporting UE in Japan.

UE4 is just a better pipeline to work with I'd imagine. So maybe SE titles won't take so long to actually release. Also, kind of makes a PC port more likely, right?

So... the trailer we had at E3 2013... the game wouldn't look like that? (or it was ever confirmed it was CGI?)

How come nobody makes this big of a stink about other devs? Nobody ever said "SO MUCH FOR iD TECH 4" after Doom 3. It's only Square that gets this kind of irrational nonsense. They used Unreal 3 for a bunch of games last gen - none of this is really surprising.

Not to mention that Luminous was created by Silicon Studio, not SE.

^ It was a collaboration between tons of devs, not just silicon. And people did give ID shit for ID tech 5, rightly so.

First Crystal Tools being a joke, and now Luminous being a joke without even a game to its name outside of FF15.

SE you are a fucking terrible ass company management wise.

Next up in moves that Square Enix purists will hate but will result in a more reliable company: Ubisoft style outsourcing to international studios in Asia, etc.

I'm sure the art style is pretty set in stone at this point.

As aforementioned, UE4 should be pretty adept at accommodating what Square Enix is trying to accomplish.

Do they even let Kingdom Hearts games go digital? I know BBS wasn't Vita compatible because it never got a PSN release and KH1.5 HD never got one either.

2.5 HD isn't available on PSN in Japan either. None of the proper KH games are available on the download stores. That'll have to change for KH3, but SE is years away from that being a problem.

Wow, that's huge. They must really want to speed up development if they're not using that new engine they keep showing off.

LOL. Next E3 we will find out that SE, after working with Epic, couldn't iron out the rendering issues with Unreal Engine 4 so they have switched to Unity and iOS as the lead platform. :p

That was from a completely different engine from Luminous and UE4 if I remember correctly. I think they said they were targeting that E3 2013 demo for the final game.

Good, this means they don't have to spend a ton of money and years trying to create an engine to put their games ohhhhhhh riiiight. Luminous. Ah hem. Yeah. Mmm.

Hope this means something for their PC support.

Writing custom engines per game(s) is a pretty outdated method now. It's one reason why Japan really lagged behind last gen compared to Western developers. See: the huge mess called Crystal Tools (FFXIII)

It was pre-rendered. The footage from last October or November was supposedly in-engine, but I don't think that sort of aesthetic and quality will be hard to nail down in UE4.

Why strange ?

SquareEnix used UE3 with their games like The Last Remnant, FFXIV etc.... Even Capcom MT Framework is a highly modified UE3. Tekken 7 is now switching to UE4.

"various issues" - Getting games out the door or Luminous Engine being a fiasco all along? Which is it?

fuckign chrhist i didn't rleaize this game was in such development hell

give it to platinum

Final Fantasy Versus/XV was in development hell. But I get the impression that KH3 has just barely been started....

The trailer at E3 2013 was really an IOU... not a real videogame.

In the full interview about KH 2.5 HD Remix, Famitsu asked Nomura for a status update on the development of KH3. Nomura says that development is proceeding as planned based on the schedule, but that they have switched to Unreal Engine 4 for "various reasons". He goes on to say that because of the engine switch they're having some rendering issues at the moment, but that Epic Games is working closely with them to resolve any issues.

LOL LUMINOUS. >_<

Is this really a problem with Luminous, or is it a problem with SE integrating the whole Luminous team with Tabata's team to work and optimize FFXV, thus leaving the KH3 team with no Luminous tech support?

"– How are things since Yoshihisa Hashimoto, the person in charge of Luminous development, resigned?

Tabata: We are fine on that point. Luminous was being developed as an all-purpose engine, but currently, the Luminous development team has been integrated into the FFXV team, and it is progressing as a custom engine optimized for FFXV. Hashimoto accomplished his role for us in establishing the form of the general use Luminous engine. Thanks to Luminous being integrated, we are able to do things like convert high end 3D data for in game use and the challenge of presenting movies made in Visual Works so they move as is has become easier."

HAHA. Might as well call Luminous a FFXV-custom engine.

Not even FFXV uses Luminous, they're just importing Luminous lighting technology in their engine.
Luminous is dead, the writing was on the wall when the creator/technical director left.
White Engine, Crystal Tools, Luminous, 7-8 years of failures.
The shift to the Unreal Engine 4 will cause an obvious delay notwithstanding what they're saying and they'll have to spend a lot of time to customize things to reproduce the art style they wanted to achive with the game.
