This may shock you, but outside of the super subjective "superior content" the effect of an OS, online and controller are debatable at best. I seriously doubt your average consumer really cares.

The only data I've seen about digital sales were Ubisofts numbers which put it at ~10%.

Warner Brothers says next-gen ratio is 25% download and 75% physical.

Obviously each publishers only speak for themselves. At this point, the number will vary a lot depending on the games. Destiny had a heavy digital push, it won't be surprising if 20% to 30% of its sales were downloads.

According to Famitsu, in Japan, these are the PS4 shares of download / physical (launch month):

Infamous: 11% / 89%
Watch Dogs: 7% / 93%
TLoUR: 14% / 86%
Diablo III: 21% / 79%
Destiny: 17% / 83%


Finally, could someone just say if Destiny PS4 + bundles is xx% above or below Destiny XBO so we can stop this madness already. =P

Yeah, if the PS4 doesn't blow past 100 million this generation is pretty much guaranteed to be a dramatic retraction from last gen, and people can't use the 'wii doesn't count' argument because even when you compare it to the combined 160 million units of the 360/ps3 it would still be much worse.

I doubt a $349 bundle would make a difference. I doubt they'd win a single month at $349, even if it included MCC or AC:U. Basically, MS just has to ride out these next few years out while slowly building the brand back up and leading into next-gen. That's all they can do. Stop the bleeding, let thrombosis run its course and hope that the scarring afterward isn't too noticeable. Damn, that was a great line. If anyone reads this, how great was that line? Fucking beautiful. Anyway, it all comes down to the underpowered turd they put inside the box. Yes, the DRM debacle was also key but that can be repaired, that was a temporary PR nightmare. Power isn't temporary. I don't ever want to hear "power doesn't matter in the console wars" again. It always mattered. Power has always been an integral part of the hype and marketing machine of games consoles. Microsoft completely shit the bed in that regard.

What's funny is that everything else has been great... they have a much better OS, they have better exclusives, they have better media support, they have a better online service, I even think the damn thing looks better...especially the white one. They did everything right except one of the most vital aspects, the innards. What an epic blunder.

I hope MS doesn't leave the console market after this debacle of a gen is over. Hopefully they realize they've achieved a lot of great things and that the future looks bright... assuming you don't put out a box 30-40% less powerful than your competition, and your competition is a company that has been in financial trouble for years while you're this behemoth making billions in profit every quarter, yet you still cheaped out on the hardware. Inexcusable, man.

But seriously, the problem is that it's underpowered. They're never going to get over that hump because it's set in stone. Being 30-40% less powerful than your main competition and at the same price is just totally inexcusable. I agree with all that you said, btw. The OS, online, exclusives, all of that is better, but the power factor is key and they shit the bed. This is going to be a long ass gen for MS and once it's over they'll have to think long and hard about if they want to continue in this sector. I hope they do.

Xbox IOne has a Madden Bundle, PS4 sells more Madden games. PS4 has a Destiny Bundle, Xbox One sells more Destiny games.



Obviously, the bundles are pulling down the number of sales since bundled software isn't counted in NPD Sales. Just by the sound of how well the PS4 Destiny Bundle has sold, the game was very successful for Sony. They will take "most consoles sold" this month over "most copies of and game sold" ANY DAY!
