Not seeing the positivity on Smash though. I think it would have been a lot smarter to release the Wii U version first in America and follow-up with the 3DS version next year to launch new 3DS on a positive note.

There's merit to the idea that one massively dominant player (e.g. PS2 era) may not be good for the industry and for gamers over time.

I don't think we're there yet though (in terms of that degree of dominance). And the overall market looking less dead than many people expected is definitely good.

This. It's the reason why I loved the PS3. Having to chase the leader means that they have to work their ass off to create value. Look at what happened with 360 software support when it was obvious they had the gen in the bag. I think this is the best thing that could happen for the Xbone and its fans.

On the other hand with the PS4 firmly in the lead, Sony has been slow to communicate with fans, slow to offer updates adding more features to the PS4, and slow to fix its serious PSN problems.

Microsoft had an promotion during the launch week of Destiny that would had pushed more buyers to the physical version over the digital version. Sony also had a big digital push with Destiny.

Yeah, the 3DS is doing much worse, the wii u is pretty much at dead levels, if they don't miraculously pull off a moderate success next time they release hardware they'll be... should I say it? No I wont. Its over used.

But seriously, the problem is that it's underpowered. They're never going to get over that hump because it's set in stone. Being 30-40% less powerful than your main competition and at the same price is just totally inexcusable. I agree with all that you said, btw. The OS, online, exclusives, all of that is better, but the power factor is key and they shit the bed. This is going to be a long ass gen for MS and once it's over they'll have to think long and hard about if they want to continue in this sector. I hope they do.

Since when has power been the focal point in a generation previously ? less performance hasn't stopped consoles growing an install base in the past. They need games and a decent price point.
