Next Generation SHMUPS: Resogun, Ubusana, Jamestown,......

And off to clear CCWI from my Steam wishlist. Now if I can just finish up this moving process with Comcast and get internet access back for my PC...

I can't speak for consoles as I don't play on those platforms.

Top 3 Steam STGs of 2014 (That I've Played):

3. Savant Ascent - The Void

It's like a twin stick, platformer, STG and it works great. Snappy controles, great sprite work, and a kickin' soundtrack, and unlockable power ups really makes this shine above the droves of STGs that were released this year on Steam. This awesome shooter can be had for a measly $0.99.

2. Danmaku Unlimited 2

This game is just plain amazing and it really baffles me that it doesn't get more buzz than it should. The game has tight controls, great bullet patterns that don't make the game feel impossible and an AMAZING soundtrack that I feel is OST of the year. It definitely blows all other STG OSTs out of the water. Danmaku offers different modes that change the way the game plays, a level up system, and a cool power up gimmick like CCWI. It's a very solid shooter that in no way should be clumped with the cannon fodder found on Steam. It's currently $1.99 on Steam.

1. Crimzon Clover: World Ignition

This is quite possibly the best shooter I've played in my two and a half decades of enjoying the genre. It's not the most technical game ever, but damn if it doesn't do what it does well. This game really gives you a sense of power that other STGs in the bullet hell sub-genre like to do, but on a level never obtained before. The sprite work is amazing, the scoring system is damn addicting, and the mechanics are super tight. It's the first Shmup I ever played to the point of using no Continues. I just loved it that much. It's currently $3.39 on Steam.

All these game could be had for less than 7 bucks. Hopefully this year brings some quality "less bullet-helly" games to the mix. Drifting Lands is showing promise. Sadly I can't speak for other platforms. Maybe others can cover that area. What is amazing about the PC side of things is that I don't think that in ALL of Steam's previous years combined has there been more STGs than in 2014. 2015 is going to be exciting.

Savant Ascent - The Void, and Danmaku Unlimited 2 are also available on IOS. I remember trying Danmaku Unlimited 2 on my phone and didn't really like it for some reason (not the controls, controls were great actually).

I'll give Savant Ascent a try, it seems really different and unique. As much as love Cave-style bullet hell shmups, I'm all for variety, and really don't like how some people turn their noses up on anything that's not this particular style of game. I like games like Resogun, Ikaruga or Super Stardust as much as I like Cave's best.

I love shmups, but since Cave's death I pretty much dropped the genre, they made the best ones and pretty much the only ones I cared about. I even bought every single of the mobile ones released; they were still amazing to play.

I really need to check out some of the recommendations in this thread; I'm interested in anything that is in Steam.

Same. The term didn't even exist in the 16-bit era, which was the heyday of the genre.

Don't be stupid. If course it did. It's been around since the 8-bit days.

Shmup is the original term. Whenever I see someone write STG, it takes my brain a few cycles to work out what they're on about.

Shmup4Life.

Just try Crimzon Clover. The guy who made it is a big fan of Cave and it really shows.

No, the original genre descriptor is "shooter" or "shooting game" (aka stg). Shmup is strictly of British origin.

I'm not a fan of stg myself, I always use 'shooter' or '2d shooter' when necessary. The only time I'll ever call something a shmup is in derision - the word even sounds gross. :p

Satazius is my pick for old style shooter. If bullet hell shooters are not your thing, and you like the more slower paced methodical shooters, like Gradius and Rtype, this game rocks. These are the kinds of shooters that I enjoy immensely, and this game fits the bill.

What sets Crimzon Clover apart from every other shooter? No one is saying anything about it other than that it's omg amazing.

I'm not too surprised. It's hard to put into exact words what makes a given shooter good (beyond "great scoring system", "great music", etc) largely because they're action games with really simple base mechanics and what makes or breaks them is often a collection of smaller design decisions the developers make across really dense levels. Blink and you'll miss them.

If you spend a lot of time playing Cave games and then hop over to, say, Shienryu Explosion, you'll find that Shienryu just isn't as tight, to put it really simply. Something like Espgaluda has more enemy variety, more aesthetic variety, perfect pacing with zero slower moments. It's so totally dense. There's always something to do, be it a complicated scoring system you can mess with in the parts you're more comfortable with (maybe working toward some earlier extends), a boss pattern to learn to stop relying on bombs for, or a particularly nasty stretch of turrets you're just struggling to handle at all. Crimzon Clover is relentlessly dense in a way that so few games outside of Cave's are.

I can't find much about Ubusana. Not enough info at the moment? Also, any word if it's coming to Vita?

No info beyond it being an Iuchi game, really. The M2 president announced it way in advance because he figured STG fans would just be happy to know something's coming, even if it's a long way off.

We'll be lucky if they fix their broken iOS games.

The best case scenario would be M2 licensing the old IPs from Cave in order to make new games or ports, similar to the relationship between Moss and Seibu Kaihatsu, but even that's a longshot.

I'd give anything for a Crimzon Clover port to next gen. Even if it were Xbone exclusive. I would buy the console just for that. I already own the PC version, but I just prefer playing on consoles much, much more.

Raiden V is actually very tempting if it remains exclusive as well.

according to adversesolutions in the shmup thread (insider connections) he said it was pretty far off and not to hold your breath for any news in the future.

I kind of feel like it's going to unfortunately fade away like project rs3 (radiant silvergun 3).

I'm sorry for my ignorance but, Radiant Silvergun 3? Is there a Radiant Silvergun 2? or Ikaruga is considered rs2?

If the next generation of shmups involves games like Jamestown and Resogun.... that would be really disappointing.

Hopefully more Crimzon Clovers come out, although that seems a lot less likely -_-

Meh, still got a huge backlog of Cave games to 1cc I guess

spiritual successor to radiant silvergun and while it was being developed it was named project rs2. in 2006 it was rumored that project rs3 was in the works for 360 (as I believe radiant silvergun was a planned trilogy). Then Maegawa was interviewed and stated that there was a new shooter in the works for 360 but it wasn't project rs3. then the shooter was put on indefinite hold.

I tried playing Danmaku Unlimited 2 on Iphone again, and I have no idea why I didn't like it the first time. The game is really good, and even looks great. Savant Ascent is hard as hell, or I can't figure out how to play it. I can't even get past the first screen in three attempts I made so far.

I found the game to be easier using a mouse... I thought it was difficult as hell with my arcade stick and controller. I actually think the game was made with mouse and keyboard in mind first and controllers second.

And Danmaku Unlimited 2 on the big screen with some good headphones is awesome by the way.

Vita and PC will be getting Son of Scoregasm at some point. More of a dual stick shooter than a shmup, but you're including Geo Wars, etc.

http://www.charliesgames.com/wordpress/?p=1160

It was announced awhile ago and supposed to come out this year so my guess is it got stuck in QA or whatever.

(his other games are on pc and great - neon bullet hell wonders)

Glad I'm not the only one in the "caravan shmups are over abundant" boat.

dangun feveron caravan/score attack mode is a bunch of fun tho.
brought the board to the chicago shmupsmeet this year and I think people played more of the time attack mode than the normal arcade mode haha.

What are caravan Shmups?

kind of a weird, time-based burst mode where you try to rack up as many points within a limited period of time.

Yes, I'll try both on PC as well. Danmaku supports iCade though, which is fantastic for me (I have modded icade with very high quality stick and buttons)

Any horizontal shooters similar to Gradius, Darius, Rtype, or Thunder force in style / tone? Everything seems very these days.

What I wouldn't give for a game that is just like Thunder Force 4 or G Darius. I appreciate all the shmups, STG..whatever you prefer to call them on steam but I'm just not a big bullet hell guy. That being said Crimzon Clover is wonderful but I had enough of bullet hells. I want a new Thunder Force! A new Darius with big ass fishies to blow up!

...shoot...I'd like a new Phelios too. :p I've been watching some Harryhausen stuff and after watching Clash of the Titans I played some Phelios and I still dig the game.

Well I only know of it because it was just mentioned in this thread, but Redux: Dark Matters is horizontal and looks like it might fit that.

I'm having a blast with Crimzon Clover: World Ignition. What an amazing game and OST.

Although to be honest, this is the first vertically scrolling bullet hell game I play properly on my new Dell monitor in vertical position.

Its just a new amazing experience for me.

Why are the Touhou Project games in the OP?

The games getting ported are a fighting game, a mystery dungeon RPG, and I think another RPG.

PC is still the only place to play the Touhou STG's for now.
