Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: Review Thread

Edit: And just to note both of you that I quoted... It's always been a hugely social game hence why before the Wii, PS3, and WiiU versions the game had pretty much exclusively local multiplayer meaning that players were within talking distance if you wanna tell me that those players didn't communicate at all because they are so "veteran" or "pro"...

I mean really communication has always been needed for the series but voice chat hasn't. I'm sorry I'm a huge fan of the series and a "veteran" but I wont go around acting like features are not needed or wouldn't be nice.

End Edit

Hardly a newcomer to the series but it was nice to have voice chat in MH3U on the WiiU and it doesn't make much sense why it couldn't carry on onto this as well.

Other 3ds titles have voice chat through the mic, it's not a standard but it does seem like an oversight as it was a feature of MH3U. And it's always fun talking with the friends you're playing with to communicate in the fly, it would be nothing but plus to have.

And it is a shame they left it out regardless of how long you've been a veteran of the series. While core gameplay makes this game as great as always certain newer features would help.

I played more than 200 hours between MH4 and MH4G and I hardly needed any communication function in the filed besides the shout outs, it's fine without a voice chat.

sure better options give better coordination, but from my experience it's still ok, and changing a room is lots faster this time, so if a group doesn't work for you, you can always switch to another room

I love these cute little baddie reviewers! Popular complaints:

Don't worry baby reviewers, I have a perfect solution for you:

Haha, yep! It's always frustrating when actual flaws go ignored in reviews and they complain about that stuff.

How many people actually like fighting Ceadeus in 3U? Not very many, but you never saw any mention of it in the reviews.

I know a lot of newcomers are jumping into the series with MH4, but there has never been and likely never will be a voice chat feature in MH -- at least not on a handheld system. The series is almost as conservative as Pokemon. Its also not needed and I would argue that even for the harder monsters.

Pokémon has had voice chat for around a decade now.

The fact that it is portable only annoys me. I can't stand portable Monster Hunter. It's too hard to play on a tiny screen with no second stick. Plus I'm just not a portable gaming fan. Guess I just have to skip this entry. Why it wasn't released on wii u is beyond me.

you can always buy a N3DS, it has the C-stick.. or get a circle pad pro.. or just use the touchscreen method... or use the monster tracking.. seriously, there are just too many methods to control the camera, at least they are worth a try..

about why it isn't on wii u.. well.. have you seen the sales of it? its quite obvious, that and the fact that Japan is in love with portables since some time ago

Pokémon has had voice chat for around a decade now.

pokemon is kinda asynchronous, I'm starting t think it was because of session stability

So it is essential you have the n3ds to play this? If so doesn't look like I'll be getting it anytime soon :(

Of course not. I put over 200 hours in 3U without a CPP and managed just fine. The camera is fine without a second stick.

I've been very busy with exams so I won't be releasing a review until I put more hours into this, but I am loving it. I can feel the addiction coming back.

Excited to play this one after getting hooked on 3U.
I really wish the game would go to Wii U though. I liked playing it on the big screen with my friends. I'm not really sure what to think of it though. Demo gave me a lot of fun, but I fear climbing will be a big pain in the ass like swimming was.

I liked fighting Ceadeus :(
But then again I was a pierce gunner sort of guy. :]
I do agree though, with most melee weapons that weren't lance the Ceadeus was an annoying fight of hitting a solid wall of whale until it died.

Monster Hunter just isn't a suitable game for critics, you really only scratch the surface with 20 hours of play. Unless there is a loop of people who actually play the games and get quite decent at them I don't think reviewers will be able to penetrate the game systems which is understandable considering. This is probably why MH4U is getting better reviews than ever before because I'm sure everyone played Tri as it was on the Wii and was fairly accessible. After all, with every Monster Hunter game you play your skill in playing carries over and your enjoyment of the game intensifies as you continue to master it's systems.

I wonder if this game is a better entry for a new player vs 3 Ultimate. I have 3 Ultimate for my 3DS but haven't really been able to get into it.

No, well... Not too sure, while playing the demo I was able to easily get the hang of things. Mastered using the bug to turn into the Golden Knight on the bosses. It might be hard though if I don't have Felynes with me to occasionally distract the monsters. Actually, they wound up beating the crap out of the monsters if I went sharpen my weapon or use a potion. These kitties don't play around.

How is the Japanese community with this game? I think it's going to be a bit more difficult making this popular in the west. While teamwork is valued in Japan. Self exaltation above others is usually what happens in the west. I do not get this feeling on GAF, but in other places I've checked out it seems the MH western community is filled with elitists. I'm not a rookie in the game and mostly play solo on HR, but wanted to treat this title different but I can't play with people who poison the experience with their attitude of "git gud" and all that mess. It will cause people prone to carting to drop out of the rooms among other things.

I wish I could find a place that breaks street dates here. I asked around the local indy game stores and they said they would get it in two to three weeks. I hope I can get them on the local Gamestops, because I really want to get it physical this time (I got 3U digital because it was cheaper).

Friday can't come soon enough!

people are complaining about loading for THIS? unless the demo is different from the final version, the loading between screens were really brisk on the old 3ds xl, especially compare to some of the psp ones.

The loadings are rather quick, even on regular 3DS. Nothing to complain about, really, the game is quite smooth overall.

voice chat still sucks in games no matter the platform.

I just use TeamSpeak or skype or just a plain old phone call if needed.

In a perfect world, we'd all be homersexual
Yeeeessssssssssssssssssss. 3 of us heading out Saturday morning to pick it up. MH3U was a massive time sink, me and the bf at the time put in about 130 hours. Crackiest game ever, and we're planning to put in much the same with this one! Good to see it finally getting some 'mainstream' recognition.

It's not about voice chat from a gameplay perspective. It's about being able to chat with friends and family while playing, to socialize. It's way, way, way more fun to trash talk, compliment, and get hyped in voice chat than it is through gestures.

That's why it's disappointing. I couldn't care less about the gameplay implications of voice chat.

It works, but it's still inferior.

There's a reason local Monster Hunter multiplayer made it such a phenomenon in Japan. Voice chat isn't the same, but it at least makes the online a plausible substitute. The shared rush of cooperating to bring down a monster is so much stronger when you can be constantly communicating through voice with those around you.

At least there's Skype.

I'm leaving in an hour to go to Walmart to see if I can grab a few copies(me, bro, sis, and friend), anyone have any luck with Walmart? The guy on the phone held the copies for me, but hopefully they don't ring up street dated, and if they do, hopefully I can get them to sell it if its on the shelf.

What is worse?

Visuals seems to still be the largest sticking point for most. Its a long standing gripe with the series as a whole though.

Lack of voice chat looks like number two from the reactions im reading.

Learning curve seems like its better this time around. Lots of praise for the accessibility of this game

What is worse?

The G rank monster selection is pathetic, the new custom guild quest system is terrible IMO, and I don't like excavated gear.

The improvements to the core gameplay and the new weapon types are enough to ensure this will end up being my favorite MH game, but it's hard not to be disappointed about the above.

Don't all Low/High rank monsters have G-Rank versions?

Lol thank you! I don't understand the whole shut in mentality. If I'm gonna spend 200+ Hours on a titles and maybe 150+ of those are with friends some goddamn voice chat would be nice.

I don't care how many hours you put in, if in playing with friends I wanna small talk and BS, I wanna hear them freak out when they are gonna get chomped or get all excited when they cause a KD or knockback.

That's the shit that makes my 200 hours worth it. Get some friends if you don't know how much fun voice chat with people can be.

Cute seeing people get upset about MH reviews still. Where were you when the PSP games came out? Probably would have had a heart attack from all the negative reviews.

Wonder if the NA version has save transferring. Could do something stupid like flying get the game from Wal-Mart today then transfer that over to the digital mh4u n3ds on Friday.

Haha I remember when people received MHFU from PS+ and all the forums and places blowing up with masses of people trying the series for the first time and failing hard.

I was going to pick up only Majora's Mask but damn... the demo is so good... I'm grabbing it also, and I shouldn't even be spending so much money, as I'll be unemployed next month, but screw it :p

Yeah, it's gonna take me ages to cross-reference this. What are the biggest abscences?

Off the top of my head I noticed Kut-Ku, Blue Kut-Ku, Garuga, Basarios, Ruby Basarios, Kirin, Oroshi Kirin, Velocidrome, Gendrome, Great Jaggi, Dah'ren Mohran, Monoblos, and White Monoblos were missing.

Those complaining about this being on a handheld:

I played tons and tons of MH on console, and tons of it on a handheld and can honestly say I feel it's very well suited to the handheld format.

At least try it, there's dozens of control schemes and camera methods to use and get used to - you'll be doing yourself a disservice if not.

Could someone explain this game and what you do to a complete noob? Heard good things about MH

Hunt monsters
Carve their bones
Turn said bones into weapons/armour so you can hunt bigger monsters

The satisfaction comes from wearing a monster that was slapping you around like a baby the day before.
And maybe from the ridiculously tight combat.
