The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

But really dude "boring as hell" is pretty harsh.

The gameplay doesn't seem to draw from the narrative themes at all. Sure it's supposed to be "Victorian era" and "Steampunk" but none of that really matters if the gameplay is still exactly the same as in any other generic shooter.

Sitting behind a cover while hordes of human characters walk towards you with seemingly no AI to speak of is intense?

Watch the whole fucking video maybe? On hard you're no bullet sponge, you get downed in a few hits in the open, one shot even by shotgunners up close. You can't just jog around to your pleasing, most fights have you in cover just like any standard cover based tps. Nothing out of the ordinary but it gets the job done well.

Nice! What difficulty was that one? You were taking a few hits and got red screen pretty fast

The way it should be played, on hard with aim-assist off.

Looks boring as all hell. Goddamn.

The enemy hit reactions look especially bad and jarring considering how good the graphics are.

YESSIR! That's how I'll be playing it. Like you said nothing new but it gets the job done. Looks that way to me. Hard with aim assist off it is!

Looks fun but the enemies, their movements and their AI just looks weird. They're very stiff. Kind of like those targets that pop up in shooting ranges.

This might be dismissed, but I can't unsee that now. Like a Call of Duty firing range.

The melee animation blending is some of the best I've seen, similar to Ryse. Visceral and seamless.

While waiting for our review and videos in a few hours, we just got a HQ video straight from Sony, showing a bridge battle. It seems like we are the first to post it (I could be wrong).Enjoy :)
http://www.gamersyde.com/hqstream_the_order_1886_bridge_battle-34090_en.html

That bridge fight is quite tame, I've had a lot more intense firefights.

Shame to see what seem to be solid mechanics and sound design go to waste with fairly boring encounter design. These enemies have no awareness. Your comrades are getting zapped into mush by a crazy sci-fi gun, so what do you do? Why stand out in the open of course. o__0

And another example of cutscenes doing the opposite of what they're intended to do: That lead up to the bridge battle would've been so much better in gameplay. There's no build and anticipation when the game drives you all the way up to cover before dropping you off.

They did consider a female lead at some pint during development, no one ever starts a story without considering who the protagonist should be. They just didn't make a female skin for the hundreds of thousands of combinations of armor since players would never see them. That would be hard to pull off convincingly. What racial thing btw?

'Stop for a pint, did you?'

Is this mechanic actually used for any puzzle solving/detective work, or is it just flash?

Flash for me so far, I was hoping for some Tomb Raider 2013-like reveals if you spin it the right way at least - sometimes there's a triangle prompt to use/reload etc.

Not me specifically, but I have seen posts indicating people being positive towards this game are said to be drinking the devs kool-aid.

No imagination, they should be saying 'Blackwater' not Kool-aid.

Quick questions:

- Can you skip cutscenes in 2nd playthrough?

- Is it fun to (re)play as an arcade game sort of, once finished? Is there a score/ranking system?

This might be dismissed, but I can't unsee that now. Like a Call of Duty firing range.

One of the demos I saw where they were in what looked like a kitchen and it seemed like the enemies were just popping up like it was a firing range. I can't unsee it either lol I just hope it doesn't break the immersion, because everything else looks fantastic, including the seamless close quarters animation blending

Looks like light work. Watch the stairs for shotgun dudes because they're the only ones who push up on your position, dodge roll nad spam, and mop up the baddies who stay back in cover the whole time.

In all fairness I feel like you could probably make more of that encounter if you get yourself into the thick of it rather than camping a perched position. Perhaps Hard mode promotes more tame play?

I imagine playing on normal and getting into the middle of the area would be more entertaining. Using blacksight, spinning around taking out targets, swapping weapons etc.

Fair enough, I can agree with that. Personally, I am happy they have at least really excelled in one important aspect of the game: the visuals. If they get fairly criticized for lack of innovation in the gameplay department fair enough. They have one aspect on lock so I don't see why they can't concentrate on more involving and innovative gameplay. Personally, I think the visuals achievements of the game should not be sidelines, even when it may be rightly criticised for its lack of ambition in gameplay terms.

The AI in that scene definitely looked pretty weak though.

I agree, although walking up to it would have limited tension - you're mainly thinking 'will a bunch of enemies suddenly spawn at this waist high cover or the next one'? (like many TPS games, not specifically this one)

Since its hard mode I'm thinking about hard mode strategies. On lower difficulties there's no bout you could get crazy with it.

Reviewers are unleashing their creativity. Here's an excerpt from the preview of the review from Forbes http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2015/02/18/11-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-order-1886/:

1. It’s the perfect game to pair with Mountain Dew and Doritos!

Here’s why: There are so many cut-scenes and moments where you don’t have to do anything but sit and watch, you’ll have your hands free. This makes it super easy to wolf down super delicious Doritos which can only be properly washed down with gulp after gulp of frosty fresh Mountain Dew!

7. Hey look, it’s time for some more delicious Doritos! And don’t forget the Mountain Dew!

This is because, no matter what RaD says, this game is not a $100 steak. You will need to eat something else.

From your post history this read like trolling, and nothing more. Were you the Forbes 'contributor'?

When you use
a cliffhanger or 'to be continued' ending
you just leave people feeling shortchanged, .

Did you just casually throw a spoiler in there? Fucks sake.

Great movie with great graphics!! :D

If only we didn't have to use that controller between cinematics, it would be a masterpiece.

4/10 Eurogamer
7.8 IGN
7.0 Game trailers
5/10 GameSpot
2/5 Giantbomb

Prediction HYYYYYPE

That's a Eurogamer 'Avoid' then, isn't it? a 4?

Anyway, this 'impressions' thread has rapidly turned into a 'shit on the game via watching video' thread again. I'm out. Shame, it was decent before I went to bed.

Painful? Why? Was the player bad? Or was there horrible hit detection? Horrible Ai?
What exactly was so painful?

I watched it through and could not see anything bad or painful about it. Quite the contrary. Great intro with good voice acting and urgency, solid sounding and looking weaponry, serviceable AI, lots of cover litered around for you to move around and mix things up, good enemy placement making use of the entire scope of the bridge including in nooks and crannys, ground level and up on little mini platforms and so on. The pistol and Grenade both also had immense impact, which coupled with the charge time for the arc gun, might still give people with better aim more draw towards it. That and the visuals and art look fantastic.

He's saying that the gameplay looks bad, not fun. You want to like the game, fine, you don't need to antagonize people with different opinions.
After seeing that footage, I'm more interested in the game, even if I admit that gameplay looks thin and uninspired.

as someone said earlier that new vid looks very wack a mole type of encounter, i mean he literally stayed attached to that waist high wall. basically its gears of war but with janky look movement and even smaller open areas.

graphics looks amazing though, if the story is good i will pick it up when its cheap
