SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

Welp... I'm up to date with Skye's videos... I guess I'll start his Banished LP

I'm gonna play me some Banished this weekend. I have one more achievement to get and then I'll have all of them, 100%. I won't be getting to it anytime soon after CSL comes out so it's now or a long time from now...

Hah, wow, Day9 is now on the CSL train too:

The only good thing about Simcity 2013 is the soundtrack.

Nah, it had a few other good things to it too. The UI was fantastic, so was the zoning to the roads concept, and the graphics were great. It's just that two of the most important parts were broken: the simulation and the gameplay. But yeah, SC5 had awesome music.
Definitely one of the few decent things to come out of the game.
Simcity (2013) OST [FULL]

Is the music in Cities Skylines even remotely good?

Nope,

I pretty much believe it had everything going for it (as you see Cities: Skylines took a lot of inspiration from it).

Just the city sizes it's what held it back for me. I'm still playing Sim City from time to time, the easiness of the tools plus the look of it, it comes together real well .Still my prefered city builder as of now, even after seeing what Skylines has to offer. I guess I'll see how the community responds after it has dropped. I'm really disliking the look of the buildings a lot from this and there is no day/night cycle?

I've noticed across several streams that people are having trouble figuring out how to get dams to work

They're a bit troubling at first but once you know what to look for, they're super simple.

You need a strong current. They're the white arrows that show up in the water when you have the dam selected and ready to build.

The more water you cross with the dam, the more power it'll generate. Problem there is that it also costs a lot more to make.

This one I found out the hard way: Make sure the starting point and stopping point of your dam is on high enough ground, because they DO change the water levels in front of and behind the dam itself. Yeah...

The cars drive through it no problem, but the nearby buildings sometimes complain about flooding. Wusses.

EDIT: Here is an album of the rest of the fairly random screenshots I took just tonight from the game: https://www.flickr.com/photos/9325274@N06/sets/72157651145624176/

So the horrid agent pathfinding and completely screwed up endgame balance just didn't bother you even one bit?

This is one case of a game that keeps exceeding my expectations every time I learn more details. It's amazing what such a small group of developers did. I'm so infatuated with what I see.

It's funny - EA had every opportunity to take a lot of feedback on board and develop a sequel like this. As I understand it, CO started development on this after CiM2, which was pretty much the same time that SC5 came out and the backlash started, so it's not like EA couldn't have beaten them to the punch with greater resources.

At work so I couldn't see the whole thing but city looks huge! Much excited!

Sorry if posted already.

The city in that post is amazing. Those elevated roads and pedestrian walkways are great - like something out of Tokyo (at least what I've seen in movies and games). I was thinking of distributing traffic from the freeways through elevated roadways to avoid traffic snarls it's good to see something to aspire to.

I can't wait to build up a city and start micro-managing certain aspects of it. It's a pity there aren't more options to fine tune intersections and roads to control traffic better.

Also, it's a pity there doesn't seem to be a way for subway trains to transition to ground trains and vice-versa. As I see it, the only way to to commute to work through a combination of above-ground and below-ground rail is is to use two trains.

A comment from the dev on that thread gave me a warm glow:
Tunnels and W2W European style buildings are confirmed to be first on the to-do list. Merging lanes and better looking highways are a high priority, and will probably be worked on soon after release.

I love the commitment to the product and the openness from the publisher and devs. With high sales, hopefully it continues well. If it's as good as I think it is, I'll be throwing cash at them for decent expansions.

Good morning, Chirpers.

Whoa. Thanks for the pic Pandemic - I've heard that some streamers caused some floods, but this is first time I see water in residential(any) part of the town.

Simcity 3000 did have the best soundtrack played that game a lot and i mean a lot. Simcity 4 also.

I think it's wonderful how much this game is getting the attention it deserves looking at the streams and video's on youtube the ich of a simulation game was needed and for good reason after the shitstorm simcity 2013 i was also burned out. Can't wait to play this also having the deluxe edition in the pre order. The commitment what CO is doing for this game is also amazing and there very open with it.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
Psykoboy2 playing around with 25 unlocked titles on his stream. Doesn't look very taxing on cpu, but that's probably down to the low population.

http://www.twitch.tv/ingamechat

I think he is running it at max in game speed to show the water change, and THEN he did his CPU measurement without changing it back.
If what I suspect is right, the bigger the city, the slower the max speed.

Edit: With the right rig, I suspect you will be able to create some massive cities with the right CPU, but they will be stuck at basically single speed.

I think I'd be quite happy to get like like a 12-15 tile city running well. Hopefully its not just a matter of either a standard 9 or a completely unlocked 25.

You could always just not build in those tiles. I don't imagine empty tiles would affect performance much.

In Skye's video series, part 15, around 8 minutes in, he makes a point of going into City Policies and pointing out the profit increase gained from enacting the "Big Business Benefactor" policy:

Perks for large businesses.
- High density commercial double their sales
- Upkeep: 4c per high density comm building

His profit immediately jumps from 12k to 27k.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ue61hMCIEms

I'm wondering if I'm missing something here. Is this an "interesting choice" decision with pros and cons (and I'm missing what the cons are), or is it a no-brainer decision that should always be picked (or relevant appropriate policy)?

I'm not a huge fan of no-brainer 'choices', as the only interesting aspect of them is whether you remember to flick the switch.

EDIT: is there a 'demand' factor present for commercial sales? If you have a surplus of high-density commercial such that you flood the city with goods and nobody needs to buy them, would there be a point where the cash increase from double sales is outweighed by the per-building upkeep? This is with the assumption that you're not neglecting your Res/Com/Ind bars, keeping the 'correct' ratio such as the bars indicate.

Commercial definitely has a demand for "goods" which need to be delivered

This road talk makes me kind of concerned about intersections, maybe I need to look at more streams and other info but I'm hoping that if you have a lower density roadway cross over a higher one it won't result in a four way stop like in SC2013 IIRC. Would be nice if the AI would have accidents, resulting in a service response, would be also nice if you could dictate how intersections are handled beyond what's automated, give busier intersections lights but another on the same stretch of road have just a two-way stop with signs and so on.

EDIT: Just saw someone asked the same thing about intersections in the roads dev diary but didn't get a response. Maybe I forgot you could choose to change an intersection in SC2013? Or was it a mod? Really hope we can do that in this Skylines.

Also trying to register for the official message boards and it's being a real pain in the ass. I registered but the activation link isn't working nor is the code and when I try to get a new one I'm being told my e-mail is not in their database. >_< Maybe it's just really slow and I need to give it some time. Oh I think I know what the problem is, I made an account on Paradox's site or something and that didn't do anything so I then created one on Paradox's forums which looked totally different and just got something about account merging, d'oh.

EDIT: Again looking at their forums I see I'm not the only one having an issue, that's good I think.

man, what a pleasant surprise this game's been. I'd kinda given up on the genre after the failure of SC5, but this looks genuinely fantastic. Pretty cool to see how much love it's been getting on twitch, and how long it's been at the top of the best-sellers list on steam. I bet Paradox and the Colossal Order crew are stoked... and I wonder if those in charge of the SC5 nonsense have the awareness to be kicking themselves, just a bit. :p

Anyway, preorder get, watching Day9. Is it Tuesday yet?

I think they're more busy right now looking for new jobs. I would love to know the ins and outs of the decision making that went behind that game and the horrible bullshit PR talk that came with the reaction.

Those who were laid off were not the ones responsible for the decisions made in SC 2013.

I'm certain it was mostly EA's fault and IIRC the person who was in charge got promoted for some reason but there's still plenty of people who worked on the game that had to have at some level of involvement that got laid off I'm sure.

I do wish this game looked as nice visually as SimCity which was insanely gorgeous with its style, but that's pretty much the only thing I'd give SimCity over it.

This road talk...

I'm not watching too many different streams, but of those I do watch nobody seems really invested in subways or sidewalks. In fact I'm not sure I've seen anybody try to utilize sidewalks yet. Skye made a single subway line, just to test it out, but he never really made any more to service other portions of his city - and here he is trying to dissect traffic problems and remedy them via more roads. I'd be curious to see how more subways and perhaps sidewalks could help cut down on traffic.

Agreed; SimCity 5 is absolutely beautiful. If they had patched in larger city plots I would never put it down.

Simcity 5 would've been so much better if traffic would've been handled even somewhat decently. As it stands, a 4 way stop isn't even simulated properly in that game.

Okay, wait, how? I thought the game was limited to 9 tiles but "could" eventually have it unlocked to 25 tiles by modding, but it wouldn't be easy? But here, before launch even, has someone already modded the game to open it up to all 25 tiles?

Don't get me wrong, that's awesome, just wondering how it's happened already, LOL.
