[RUMOUR] PS4 beta firmware 2.50 brings external HDD support

Yeah thread title should read application backup, it already supports external HHDs for copying (non game content though). If all this firmware shit is true, jesus they need to do more frequent updates. Seems like they've been doing everything people bitch about and more, just not releasing it.

im thinking its so you can offload games to an external source to make room on your primary gaming HDD and later you can move it back to play that game again. It's to help with the burden of redownloading large digital games.

Doesn't look like that at all. You either copy the entire drive and then use it to reinstall the entire thing, or you don't use it at all.

the screen implies its all or nothing though.

For your idea to work well you would need some list you could choose from to restore or else its just restoring everything from that last saved file (which means your newly installed games would be wiped, unless you made another backup with those games included).

Some more pictures of the process would help (more importantly the restore process) answer this but we'll see.

works for Gamestop (lol)
It's basically just like PS3 backup utility it looks like. Pretty much only useful if you're switching the internal HDD. Meh.

I still hope we get external support at some point, but this is ok for now. Once mine (1.5 tb) starts filling up i'm sure there will be bigger space options out there for me to backup and replace with.

One question....why not at least one usb port in the back of the PS4 Sony? Not one?

Is there anyway to repurpose the camera port for data? I'd pay $20 buck for a add on.

You could just get a powered 7-port USB 3.0 hub. That's what I use for my PS4 and it works just fine. This solution also lets me connect my DS4 the entire time so I don't have to worry about the battery running out of juice.

I use a 4 port USB hub, it has a small suction cup and I just stuck it to the top of the PS4.. It's black, and lights up blue... As awful as my description may make it sound, it looks pretty awesome..

if its just back up, then super lame, looks like my PS3 will be staying plugged in and will still remain a better multi-media device despite being nearly 9 years older

Buy a usb hub.

Not sure why people are complaining about this. It is a great feature for people wanting to upgrade the harddrive which is super easy.

Thank you. Don't really care if I can't play directly off an external. This backup feature is going to save me a ton of bandwidth. I wouldn't have to download games twice anymore for both of my PS4's.

This will be a godsend for me. I plan to replace my PS4 this Fall, but I was dreading having to re-download and install all my games and data. I might buy Bloodborne digitally now.

It would be smart for Sony to make it work like Steam's backup utility where you can offload game installs to another drive instead of having to download them again. Or shit, even bring those game installs to a friend's house so when you log onto your PSN account there you don't have to actually re-download the games.

I just replaced my PS4 today because of the Gamestop 50% extra credit deal, and yeah, right now I have roughly 540GB of stuff that is downloading off of PSN onto the new system. If only think firmware update had been before today, lol.

Ahh well, apologies to Comcast, please understand.

Well that has...limited uses I suppose. So it's a backup only? Seems like not much of a feature at all if it has no impact on the day-to-day uses of the console.

Good way to make it easy to upgrade HDD's though so that's cool.

I'm starting to this the PS OS has some type of limitation/restriction regarding HDD connection maybe piracy of by OS design. Either way this is a decent compromise.

Isn't that just for restoring your system once you've upgraded your hard drive, and not actually playing games off of?

From the wording that's what it sounds like to me too, but it does imply that there should be external HDD support in the OS anyway. Whether that extends to playing installed games off the external HDD is anyone's guess.

Comeon Sony release a PS4 with a rear USB or 2, I would happily pay an extra $50 for a model like that

This sounds solely like a backup function for example to replace the internal HDD. It doesn't seem to do what you guys are expecting, which is to move and restore individual games.

Damn :(

Looks like I still need to go through the trouble of replacing the internal HDD.

Well of course the support for external hdd is there... And it has been there from day 1, since you can copy saves to external devices.

Great news even if it's just for backing up games. When I installed a 2 TB hdd to my PS4 it took an eternity to redownload everything.

Damn :(

Looks like I still need to go through the trouble of replacing the internal HDD.

It's not difficult, it's just kind of a pain downloading all your games again.

If this is true, and I think it is since 500gb is nothing, thank you sony and keep doing your thing, but it should have been this way since the beginning, a must update.

Beats redownloading 500gb when upgrading HDDs.

Upgrading your HDD without the option is shit ... particularly given how crap the Playstation Store is in terms of re-downloading your old content.

So it's a feature useful for, what, 10% of their audience? How many users upgrade their HDD? And I'm not talking about the GAF audience. Granted it's still probably more than those that want to play MP3 off a USB stick.

Curious if it's just a "duplicate to new HDD when swapping out" addition if it takes as long as the PS3's similar transfer method.

Remember that taking like 36 hours or so when moving from a 500GB drive to a 1TB drive.

And also more than those who want to stream movies over DLNA, or remap their controls, or use remote play. What's your point.

A lot of people are going to be upgrading over the course of the generation as 500GB becomes increasingly too small, and larger drives becoming even cheaper. You say only 10%, which I find to be low, but that is honestly pretty good for one feature such as that. People here have been demanding DLNA support since launch, and I'd be shocked if 10% of the PS4's users even know what DLNA is, let alone have a use for it.

Perhaps there's a reason you'll need to be able to back up your saved data on the PS4. Perhaps a slim is on it's way and Sony want to make sure you can transfer your info over to the new console easily.

I'd rather the PS4 supported external HDD usage than allow us to swap the internal drive if I'm being perfectly honest.
