Batman Arkham Asylum/City Remaster (Rumor)

Actually the number of AAA titles are dropping every year. As someone said, we have only got one new unannounced retail tile in 2015. If people keep paying money for these remasters, then publishers won't even bother with new projects because they know they can cash cow these remasters anytime.

Remasters would have little bearing on this regardless. As budgets keep ballooning and the price for failing or even under-performing games becomes greater (in the form of lay-offs and studio closures), it stands to reason that publishers would mitigate such risk and consolidate their resources behind fewer, but bigger titles they know (think) will sell better. Instead of 5-10 mid-level AAA games (something like Dead Space for example), we'll be getting 2-3 mega-titles with much smaller ones in between.

This is the new normal, remasters or not. At least remasters can help fund other projects.

Some of these responses are baffling - 'these remasters are stopping new content!' There is a new arkham game coming out in 3 months.

Remasters take little time, with a small team and allow new people to try games they have not played, strengthening the franchise and making new games in the series more likely whilst also promoting original games due to the easy cash flow injection from the remaster.

Get a grip guys.

I wonder if the devs who are making these remasters could be using that time to make b-tier games? Might be one of the reasons we have less and less b-tier games.

Just a thought lingering in my mind.

I feel like they intentionally skipped out on backwards compatibility with these consoles.... just so they can resell us those same games with a bumped up resolution.

I think the market for b-tier games is very low.

It sucks that the publisher I actually wanted to see remasters from this gen has only made one (Nintendo.)

Although maybe its because they're busy making actual new games.

From the other thread, some relevant data :

PS4 Games Released

2013
Total Retail Releases: 16
Remasters or Ports: 4
25%

2014
Total Retail Releases: 69
Remasters or Ports: 17
Roughly 24.6%

2015
Total Retail Releases: 12
Remasters or Ports: 4
Roughly 33.3%

Overall
Total Retail Releases: 97
Remasters or Ports: 25

This means that roughly 25.8% of all retail-releases on PS4 to date are either remasters or ports from previous gen.

EDIT: I also just realized I didn't include DmC, so there is another remaster.

IGN Italy?

Given some of the TFMA that italian gaming news has pulled, I'm going to take this one with a rather large block of crystalline sodium chloride.

Who needs BC when you can get all the games remastered?

Ha. I was just thinking this. Not having backwards compatibility is really paying off for these companies.

It's funny that the lack of backwards compatibility used to be a negative. Now it's just expected while releasing games from just a few years ago is a positive because "I didn't get to play it and now I can".

Smart business move.

Since when does BC up the native resolution of my games? Improve the framerate? Give me better textures and features?

BC and remasters really aren't the same thing at all.

Arkham City was such an incredible game.

Once you got kind of comfortable with just how incredibly well they nailed playing as Batman, they reminded you that, hey, they *also* nailed playing as Catwoman.

The quality is really incredible, I've spent 70 hours in this game and 100%'d it, so if a remaster looks cooler enough I'll totally buy it full price, because I'll be more than happy to throw more money at this game.

Also remaster whiners are weird. If you don't want them don't buy them. And no, remasters aren't keeping devs from making brand new games, and you know that.

How much you wanna bet they remove the 3DTV functionality?

Really chaps my hide how the industry was all gung-ho for 3D compatability a couple years back when it meant horrid resolutions and jittery framerates, but now that we've got hardware that can handle it much better, they can't be bothered.

It arouses a lot of suspicion at how dedicated any devs will be to the VR headsets that are on the horizon. Considering those need to similarly render two images for full effect, 3D support on consoles should be ramping up as devs seek to become more familiar and proficient with it. Last-gen ports are much easier to get running smoothly are are ideal to cut devs' teeth on stereoscopic rendering than current-gen fare that's trying to redline the system's limits while rendering once. Cultivating a library with a good number of 3D-supported games could be a nice boon to increase Morpheus' perceived value upon release. But instead it's a corpse that no one speaks of.

Everybody was pushing for 3D because 3D was ramping up in the TV market.

Then it turned out nobody really wanted 3D and the only people buying those TVs were people who were either caught up in the fad or just wanted a nice TV and didn't care whether or not it had 3D. Very few actually bought new TVs just for the 3D.

It's a lot like splitscreen. Now that we actually have the power to push splitscreen, nearly every game has dropped it. Why? Nobody really cares about it anymore and it's not worth the extra effort if nobody cares about it.

Didn't the 360 scale up old games or was it arcade titles? I can't remember.

On a side note, the developers of BLEEM! would scale up old PSX games until they were sued into oblivion.

It is a little odd how Rocksteady have been pushing the whole "Arkham Trilogy" thing. I get that they didn't make Origins, but it seems a little strange that they insist on using the word "trilogy", not "saga" or "series" etc. Are WB ok with that? I haven 't played Origins, and I get that it wasn't extremely well received, but part from the bugs it didn't sound offensively bad. I know a lot of people think it has the best story.

People are pissed because said company could working on something new rather than bleeding the easy money out of the fan base. Having contempt for your fan base is great.

Tell me what game you're waiting for Bluepoint/Nixxes/High Voltage to make.

Meh I'm ok with it. If this gives folk who never had PS3/360 a chance to play these games then alrighty then. As long as it doesn't come at the expense of new games lol.

the top thing? that happened. that happened the way you described it.

the bottom thing? that's bonafide crap. we've been successfully funneled into the one console/one subscription per player model, despite 90% of last gen's best performing and most notable titles being known for featuring expansive local multiplayer suites.

sometimes it feels like if publishers en-masse decided they were gonna dial back their games to 720/30 this gen to focus on visuals, yuknow, just like give it three years and you'll have all convinced each other you're the ones who made that choice, like, 'it's not really worth the extra effort if only pc enthusiasts care about 1080/60 lol'

gah I'm still so fucking salty over Halo 5

Got a chuckle out of this from IGN:

IGN said:
Remastered versions of Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Asylum are reportedly being remastered for PS4 and Xbox One."

So they're remastering remasters? The article then goes on to use the word another dozen times in the span of a few paragraphs. Oh IGN, you're adorable.

all good things
I'm okay with this. I tried to go through Arkham Aslyum on Xbox 360 again as I stopped about half way when it first released and it really looked dated.

I'm over here with my 360 still laughing away. This gen really blows once again. I have no issue waiting till both the PS4 and XBOX ONE are well under $300 new. I cant do it anymore spending all this money on a hobby that seems lost on me. I know I'm not the only one that feels this way.

I understand feeling like you aren't missing out on much due to the remaster trend but how does this change the fact that there will be a new Batman coming that's Xbox One/PS4 only? Why does this news proves that "current gen blows"?

I haven't bought one remaster yet. I probably blame the people that bought GTA 5 or the last of us remaster.

This gen does blow. Its the remasters the new games coming up short. Nothing has really even made me question getting a new console except for Bloodborne and Halo 5. I can wait until 2017 to play them at a price I can agree with. I'm not going to get suckered. It's not worth it.

How dare PS4 owners that were 360 only last gen buy one of the best PS3 games of all time!

Then wait then. My point was simply what does this news change? There's still many new games coming out this year and there will be more coming this year that haven't been announced yet [on top of more remasters (DUN DUN DUN!) that can easily be ignored].

Soooo its basically gonna be a next gen version of what you can buy off Steam for $10?

My first thought as well. Though I won't complain about one of the best new series of last-gen coming forward. I played on PC, but I know if I hadn't I would have like to have all the games on my system of choice.

Hey lets all cry about something that we'll all forget it even exists within a year, because fuck those people who couldn't bother buy these games last gen.

As long it doesn't take any time away from making their next big game, then i don't see any problem at all. How do you this is wasting dev resources/time? What if this project is actually giving devs something to do rather than nothing?

With that said, kinda hoping this is false because getting the Platinums will torture me... Those challenge rooms...ugh..Once was enough.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
But I thought we prefered AAA games to not be rushed!

I'm confused guys :(

Maybe the game was delayed halfway into development, because the company decided to layoff some of the guys and use their paycheck towards making these remasters
