Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo) hires Mike Caviezel (Forza audio lead)

I was going to just buy GT7, but I'm now I'm totally gonna buy the shit out of it. Hype meter rising...

I like that PD is cluing into recent criticisms and responding in kind. Hopefully the new car sounds for GT7 won't disappoint like in previous games, though I'm tempering my expectations still. It's better than nothing to have minor improvements, but major improvements, I'm not getting hyped just yet.

Megaton if you ask me.

And isn't this the first " western guy" being in a major role at PD ?

Edit: Just read about Evo guy doing the UI, so that's another. Not sure why you'd need some UI professional to at least avoid the blatant mistakes GT5 suffered from, but this is good news too

Doubt it, it'll probably be a late 2016 game though. And Prologue :p.

No, they already killed endurances. Leave as it is since they won't make it more complex anyway.

Drab and lifeless, race tracks. Track asphalt, grass, trees, barriers, sandpits.
Mmmm, you mean add spectators doing stuff like in Nurb 24h?

No, leave the models they can salvage, more cars is good.

GTA and GT6 for some cars.

The new Vision GTI SS is pretty good too.

Blimey, that sounds fab.

GT7:p Was supposed to not be happening but this might change if they delay it.
I think we might get a time trial demo by the end of 2015 on PSN.

I was joking about the Prologue, what we might get is 2016 GT Academy as an early demo for the game at the end of the year.

Probably. And by then MS will have released four Forza games. Sigh.

Forza 6, FH3, and?

Blimey, that sounds fab.

What?

I just want them to use the hood can audio when you are in the car...the in car audio is always so subdued.

Audio virtualization. I honestly prefer that (with accuracy) than exaggerated sounds inside the car.

Sorry,ni meant since launch. So F5, FH2, F6, FH3.

I'd love a GT prologue or even a GT6HD this year though. Just something to tide me over for a while.

I don't think the Horizon games are fair to include in such a comparison of number of racing game releases. It's a different studio. Driveclub is more comparable to those games.

Then GT6 was released after F5. Should they have released this on PS4 instead? Absolutely. But fact is they didn't.

So that leaves one Forza game, F6, before the eventual release of GT7 on PS4.

They've patched GT6 so that you can choose which type of engine audio you want to play. You can choose from

Camera View Dependent (default option)
Standard
Cockpit
Hood
Exterior

You can go into the options while driving and change them until you find one that you like, so you don't have to keep exiting out of the game to test it.

Holy shit!
Unexpected.

I've always said that PD NEEDED to hire western talent for audio. They've listened. I am now more than hopeful and I am fucking excited about playing Gran Turismo again.

Well fucking done, and about fucking time!

Amazing hire for GT7!

I hope this does not mean Forza audio will take a hit, though :(

It's in good hands with Nick Wiswell..

This is great. Forza has incredible car sounds. Engine, tyres, everything sounds goddamn incredible. Especially with a good set of cans and a gopd dacamp.

Absolutely. The top 3 problems in the PS3 Gran Turismo games were these, IMO.

1. Sound design
2. Framerate
3. PS2-era track models for many tracks (the cars I can look past)

If you want an example of how bad they are, look no further.

That's meant to be a V10.

What do you mean?

(It's a 'meme' of sorts around NeoGAF regarding situations notably at Naughty Dog where there is/was concern about the studio around the time of notable people leaving the company, such as Amy Hennig for example. It's been regurgitated again and again as a running joke whenever someone leaves a big company)

Does this sound way overboosted to you as well, then?

Cars are loud, you know.
There are bad sound cars in GT games and I criticize them...

But there are good cars sound too... accurate like real life... Forza cars don't sound real life... any of them and I hear a lot of real life cars.

Yes... cars are loud... Forza make them unrealistic.

Me too, I hope they keep the reverb/echo effects too. Maybe even improve them.

It's not that bad when it's stock. It's usually when you tune the engine that cars sound bad and it really falls apart. Still room for improvement on the stock sounds too though. The above one is the same car with the background music off.

Overboosted, inaccurate, rubbish...whatever man. I'd take all that over GT's current sounds any day.

I mean, how can someone truly not be bothered by something like this

It boggles the mind..

PCars sounds amazing.

That boggles me too.

But there are accurate sounds in GT too... just not generalize... try to hear the Galardo for example.

The strange thing about GT6 is that there are odd premium cars which sound great when home theatre is selected in the audio options. I mean, they have real presence and bass and an authenticity to their sound. Utimately though, I think Polyphony were held back by the past - PS1 era recordings and sound processing and wanted to make everything blend. Maybe also by RAM. Come to think of it, most of the nice sounding cars were introduced during the hill climb. One car on one short track.

I really wish they had made a clean asset break with 5. GT4 should've remained the museum.

Nick Wiswell on FM5 sound design:
Details you may pick up on via the audio include throttle, positive torque, negative torque, exhaust upgrade level, turbo boost pressure, which view the player's in, where competitors are and how close your car is to the trackside wall. There's an element of stylisation in the use of non-automotive effects like lion roars and human screams to enhance the mix.
Overboosted sounds like a good description, yes.

The Gallardo in GT is a perfect example of a hideously INaccurate sound. I've seen multiple Gallardos and R8s (same engine) in real life and NFS/Forza are the closest representations of the real sound.

I think some of the newer GT6 cars have great sound because as you said they only recently started to do better audio so some of the newer GT6 cars got them and the older ones kept the less accurate sounds. At least that's the impression I got from this old interview:

Polyphony has recently started its own blog where it's addressing concerns of its community, including the quality of the sound within the series which Yamauchi admits isn't up to scratch. It's still in the plan to update the audio in Gran Turismo 6 - as Yamauchi revealed to Eurogamer last September - but the full overhaul won't come until Gran Turismo 7.

"I think the quality of the sounds in Gran Turismo 6 will be improved, but most of the work will be done in Gran Turismo 7," said Yamauchi.

Gran Turismo 6 has enjoyed a suite of updates recently, with a selection of Ayrton Senna's cars being followed up by the inclusion of Austria's Red Bull Ring and the Toyota TS030 - all for free.

I stopped here... I put a Galardo close to my room and the sound is close to perfection from GT in all gears.

Of course you can say which is game or not but the sound is really accurate.

Please explain how this (2:24 or so) sounds anything like a V10.

It doesn't even sound like a car, the closest thing I can liken it to is if you heard a very unhealthy, dying aircooled VW Flat 4.

Cars are loud, you know.

A lot of these types of videos are extra loud because of the sensitivity of the mics on the phones and devices recording, plus the general acoustics of the environment.

It's not necessarily about loudness either. That you can manage yourself just with the volume. It's more about how accurate it is not just compared to the environmental sounds, but the extent to which the tonality of the different sounds share likeness with the real thing. With regards to Forza itself, Turn 10 hollywoodised a lot of the audio, mixing in lion roars, screams etc to add additional drama. That's not necessarily a bad thing mind, as it still sounds highly satisfying, and still close enough to accurate, it's just that it's not exactly completely accurate either.

One thing I will say is that Forza 5's audio reproduction is still a lot better than Forza Horizon 2's, which sounds more electronic and whiney, but both are head and shoulders above Gran Turismo's, which leans towards an even more artificial flavour.

Forza has ridiculously good audio, especially Forza 5, so this is a great get for Polyphony. I'm just hoping they picked him up early enough to let him actually make a difference in GT7.

I can understand all of this and I get that they're not entirely accurate, but I just absolutely can't fathom how GT's electronic humming/whining is even close to the sound of any car, let alone supposedly "close to perfection". It might be Hollywood-ised (and I've even used that phrase myself in reference to Forza's sounds), but it's still far, far more accurate than GT has ever been.
