(PC/Mobile) Mystic Quest HD being developed by Dark Design [UPDATE: CONFIRMED SCAM!]

I like Mystic Quest and the soundtrack is great but c'mon.

C'mon.

I actually played through FF4 for the first time recently and I really disliked it. I felt it was way too linear and that the story was particularly terrible, and by the last few hours (well before you get to the moon), finishing it was just a slog. I'm not even sure why I made myself do it, but I think it was just so I could speak with at least some authority on it. Now I'll admit I never played the FF games growing up, so I lack a lot of the glee and in-built nostalgia associated with the games, but I have those feeling for plenty of other games, so far be it from me to tell anybody what they like is wrong. These are just the personal thoughts of a late-comer to the FF series. So far I've finished I & II (GBA Dawn of Souls versions), III (DS version), and IV (GBA version). Of those, III is far and away my favorite overall, and I really liked II for the crazy ideas it brought to gaming, so much so that I made a thread about it.

I feel obligate to play this again. I didn't 'get' rpgs until Mystic Quest. After finishing it I started going back and playing my NEW rpg's and enjoying them.

edit: ^^^ that doesn't sound good. Guess I'll go play the original again.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I think this guy is most likely scamming people before he gets a C&D from Square Enix:

Showing that good minds think alike Jason Schreier just happened to have published an article about half an hour after that thread was made:
http://kotaku.com/fan-made-final-fantasy-mystic-quest-remake-seems-like-a-1688055419

At the very least Square-Enix are aware now as they have a statement there.

Edit: I feel as slow as Kotaku.

I see this story is getting more interesting. It's been fishy from the start. If he is indeed lying about Square Enix's involvement, he is either mentally ill, or the worst scammer out there.

What the fuck is that. Disgusting. Is that even licensed?
I was expecting this (Japan only phone remake of Final Fantasy Adventure/Mystic Quest) and now I'm sad

It's not your fault but it still should be called Mystic Quest Legend then

I really want to play that. So frustrating to know this is out there but unplayable.

He just posted the first 10 minutes video claiming all money goes to SE europe and that All assets and IP are (C) 1992-2015 SQUARE ENIX CO LTD.

Y'know, technically that could mean "I'll use the money to buy a shitload of Squeenix games ('all money going to SE Europe'). Then I'll sell them on."

Some powerful nostalgia glasses in here. Mystic quest is one of the most shallowest simplistic rpgs ever created. It barely requires any kind of strategy. Might of been passable back then but I'd rather spend my time on an actual rpg. If you want a refresher just go watch ProJared's video on it.

It doesn't have to be "deep" to be a fun game.

Dark Design claims the game runs at 60 frames per second in HD mode, despite what would appear to be a problematic frame rate in the video.
The company's website lists Mystic Quest: HD Remaster (conspicuously lacking the Final Fantasy name) as coming to PC and Android on March 13 for $7.99.

From GameSpot, we apologize for pointing you towards a site that sounds like it is maliciously taking users money and email addresses. If you have a pre-order, we suggest canceling it immediately.

Eh, just download Mystic Quest Remastered 3.1.1.0 for free. I have no idea why they wanna make money out of this when the game was already released free before.

I saw someone from Twitch playing this game and yeah, it's not worth paying for it. Still an interesting game to play tho.
You may want to hold off on that

It came out a while ago for free and was apparently riddled with adware:

"Ok, so the last time I tried downloading this, I got a ton of viruses on my PC. Does anyone know how to download this without any issues?"

Loved Mystic Quest on the gameboy when I was a kid hehe.

Wish I could play it on the 3DS somehow. Playing a rom on my phone just isn't the same >.<

That was Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu that was on Gameboy. What was on Gameboy was basically a Zelda clone that created the Mana series, what this is, is a more traditional turn based rpg.

Jase you might want to update the OP

Done. Just FYI, I always search for my username after a prolonged absence, so if there's something you think I should be aware of or whatever it's best to include the "C" so the post shows up among the results.

I'm not saying the game has to be deep just not incredibly shallow. Mystic quest is a game with training wheels that babies the player. Which makes sense since it was developed as introductory rpg for people outside of japan. For anyone with rpg experience I'm just saying that they might find it really boring.

Like most AAA games nowadays? MQ may not have had much going for it, but it's "shallow" combat was pretty refreshing after the grindfest that was just about every other rpg at the time. Having simple mechanics doesn't inherently make a game bad, and as others have said in this thread, they even prefer MQ over bigger named games like FF4(mainly because of the difficulty).

Not even remotely. Combat boils down to picking one of 4 weapon types to do extra damage and some thrown in spells and thats about it. Healing items respawn and are found everywhere. Armor auto upgrades for you. You don't really need money at all. The last boss can be killed with cure. Secret of mana was a grindfest? Final fantasy 2? They're not that difficult of games. They certainly don't hold your hands like mystic quest does though. Its correct that simple mechanics don't make a game bad. However designed with a simple level design can make a game boring. Look at super mario bros. Simple mechanics yet great level design. If you enjoy the game then thats ok. Never said you couldn't. I just think most people nowadays would find it boring due to its hand holding nature.

To be fair, Mystic Quest has always had the look and feel of a Seiken Densetsu offshoot, from the tile graphics and sprite design to the way you use weapons as tools on the map to progress... the main difference being going from free-reign action to a turn-based battle system. I actually wish Square-Enix developed more games that allowed you to use your weapons as tools, ala Secret of Mana.

No console release? ah well true or not I'm less interested now. I'll keep my Super Nes version then.

Sorry for the necrobump but I don't think this deserves a new thread:

https://www.facebook.com/KisarethStudios

Kisareth Studios "bought" (?) the dev of the HD remake recently and has been updating their Facebook recently with the following

We'll be issuing a public statement next week in regards to Mystic Quest HD after our CEO has spoken with Square-Enix and confirmed some matters.
We are actively pursuing the matter alongside Square-Enix concerning the matter of the "Final Fantasy Mystic Quest HD Remake", and we are confirming that Mr. Jackson formerly of Dark Design Games has provided fraudulent documents to us and misrepresented himself. We are in full cooperation with Square-Enix on this matter.
It is confirmed by Square-Enix that Jake Jackson formerly of Dark Design Games has defrauded us (especially in terms of our resources/materials/personnel/money), and the public-at-large, about his activities. Any and all projects created by Mr. Jackson/Dark Design games linked to any Square-Enix IP are to be considered fraudulent, and we strongly advise everyone not to send any money or purchase anything in regards to this now and in the future. We also strongly advise everyone not to purchase or support any future projects created by Mr. Jackson/Dark Design Games.
We also deeply appreciate and thank Square-Enix for taking the time to speak with us, and resolving this matter as much as possible. We hope to one day work with them on a future project, and wish them the very best with their impending release of Final Fantasy XV.
Not that anyone still thought this was legit, but I guess that's that

Wow, so this dude also somehow tricked Kisareth Studios into thinking he had a deal with SE?

Guess they were either asleep at the wheel when it came to due diligence or he's really good.

Strangely enough, I disliked the GBA remake of the GB game (that I played again after and found better), I'd like to try this one, if not just for the color graphics.

wat
how did kisareth think this was legit in the first place?

Squeenix confirmed two months ago that it had nothing to do with the project, so it is a little strange that Kisareth would buy the "studio" a week later and only recently realise something was amiss.

I listened to the podcast for some reason, have some bullet points:

-Mystic Quest HD did actually exist and as far as they know, both MQHD and the original MQ remake people unearthed were made by him, albeit with assets and other assistance that he either stole or commissioned and didn't pay for. (S-E requested it be destroyed and they complied, but they can't guarantee he doesn't still have his own copy.)

-They say they legally "acquired" his company (including the RPG Maker-to-iOS tools he claimed to have that no-one ever saw) for $0; from the sounds of things, they only ever sent him $100 to buy a tablet or something and all their other expenditure came from having to take people off other projects to try and salvage MQHD.

-They say they went along with all his bullshit because they thought he wouldn't lie so blatantly about something that was so easy to disprove, and because they wanted to protect him from being exploited by S-E. (Not buying it.)

-When they asked for proof of his deal with S-E, he sent them a suspicious and poorly-written "contract" with what he claimed was a signature from Phil Rogers; when they questioned him on the contract, he claimed any errors or incongruities were down to the fact that it was a rushed transcript of a verbal agreement.

-When asked about S-E USA's public disavowal of MQHD, he claimed it was just a case of S-E USA/EU being out of step

-Both S-E USA/EU confirmed that they had no association with MQHD, and someone at S-E EU claimed that he'd actually visited their offices at one point and tried to pass off his bullshit contract to them as legitimate

tl;dr: dude was running a scam but he's also probably crazy to boot.

I have to say, the way they talk about this whole situation is kinda suspect, too--they never really give an adequate explanation for why they went into business to begin with, and they talk about everything so passively without ever acknowledging how fucking stupid you'd have to be to buy into any of this garbage. I almost thought they were trying to exploit him in case his contract did turn out to be real, but I look at their company website and think that they might just be marginally less inept than he was.

I had a similar impression. They seem to have their stuff together from a business perspective but still fell for this scam, even after the media reports, comments from S-E, inacurracies in the contracts and without ever having contact with SE until after the guy disappeared? Something doesn't add up or they were incredibly naive as well. Maybe they REALLY wanted his software to get their games on mobile and saw a chance to get a good relationship with SE included for free, so they decided to ignore all warning signs.
