Don't take this the wrong way, but it's obvious you didn't know anything at all about this Buckley guy before a couple of days. You want to be the good guy and defend someone you felt was bullied, but you lacked all the context about why he's hated. Nothing too wrong about that, but now that you know this guy isn't exactly the blameless victim you though, don't you think you should inform yourself of what he's accused of and reevaluate your position? Instead of switching into defensive mode with generics like:
1) "I didn't know he did those things, talk about that instead" (they have been talked about at length both in this thread and outside, it's just more fun to mock his "art" so people do that more often).
2) "I'm sure everyone has done dark deeds in the past" (we are all judged accordingly to what we do and how we own and handle our mistakes, otherwise this argument can be used to say Gandhi and Hitler are the same).
3) "I read his intentions regarding the loss comic in a more positive way" (again, you lack the context and subsequent declarations about that comic, including how dismissively he always talked about his girlfriend).
You have good intentions but at this point it just seems you want to look like the better man no matter what. Also, where you see widespread hate I see mostly mockery, or perhaps my own opinion of him tints my perception.
im honestly more than fine with admitting im wrong or ill informed. i think ive changed my mind on topics more than most posters on gaf. in fact, i pride myself on it. that said, let me address your three points:
1. to me, doing this basically amounts to saying this his presumably unfunny comic is a worse offense than any of the other things for which he's hated. i dont buy that most people rag on cad because they're aware of buckleys sordid past. if that were the case, the vg cats guy wouldnt receive the exact same treatment (unless he's also done a bunch of terrible things im unaware of).
2. my point here is that because our mistakes aren't visible to as many people, our punishments tend to be more fair. Some really trivial things can catch the ire of folks on the internet and the response is totally lopsided because we see our attacks as minor singular swipes at someone rather than as a part of the aggregate.
3. me and the other dude were both arguing off of the blog post content. so that's really all that applies to that back and forth. additionally, unless you know someone's life story you're
always going be missing context.
edit: also while i wasn't aware about most of the things that drew ire toward buckley, i was aware of the miscarriage comic and the accompanying blog post, as well as the countless cad threads over the years.
