Once a Nazi, always a Nazi.

He bombed France, too

well that's a mystery solved! Still bugged the hell out of me as a kid. "Did everyone's parents die?!"

The family tree is made by Don Rosa, after notes left by Barks, so it was published long time after the major characters were introduced. Some of the more obscure characters were then introduced by Rosa in his Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, but I think majority of Duck fans see it as canon.

Rosa did talk to Barks about the family tree. I know that Rosa had intended for Matilda McDuck to marry Ludwig Von Drake, to explain how the latter could be Donald's uncle, but Barks vetoed that.

Larger version, by the way:

Okay, thanks for clearing that up.

I think I need to read some Rosa when I get home.

Aiii

So not worth it
Donald Duck has had his own magazine in The Netherlands since 1952, I doubt there's a person in the country that didn't grow up reading it, very big part of our society, I would say.

They did a pretty cool cover a few weeks ago in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum:

It's the same in Finland. And we had the first issue in December of 1951.

Same in Norway, but it started in 1948.

I think at some point during the eighties the circulation of the magazine was 250k, while the population at the time was around 4 million. I can't imagine there are many other comic magazines with the same level of success in the world.

By far my faovrite Disney character. Donald is freaking amazing. One of the few if only character I actually will go out of my way to meet at Disney parks. Also where's the best place to get the collections of all the Duck comics?

This is interesting. Had to check.

These are the top circulation numbers of the magizine in Finland:

317 570 in 1975 with a population 4,7 M
320 514 in 2007 with a population 5,49 M

Laughing Banana

Weeping Pickle
The Duck is always the superior one to Mickey.

Kind of hilarious how Inception is so incredibly, incredibly similar to one of his comics one can immediately wonder...............

Did anyone of you fellow Donald Duck & Co readers buy one of those Huey, Dewey, and Louie Junior Woodchucks Guidebook? It felt so amazing as a kid getting one of those after reading all the stories where the book answered every conceivable question. Not that the real thing was close to that lol. But it was a pretty neat book of basic survival. After that I think they started releasing several themed versions that weren't as cool. Not sure if anything like it was released in English.

I had this one. I was too a bit bummed it did not have all the knowledge in the world, but I liked it still.

Amusing how they blocked the trio's dad, but what about their mum, Della? She looks evil. Was she evil?

Rosa really wanted to emphasise Donald's bad temper. His mom and dad are both portrayed as having really bad temper. I suppose the way Rosa drew Della tells she has the similiar character trait. Maybe that's why I didn't work out with Huey, Dewey and Louie's dad...

This is Donald's mom and dad meeting for the first time and falling in love:

Time to read the best Donald comic ever created again (The Duck Who Never Was, by Don Rosa):

Donald turns 50, everyone seems to have forgotten, he blames nobody but himself for the failure he has been all these years. He's depressed, in a very dark place, where all those failed job attempts have finally taken their toll. He goes to his latest job (cleaning in a museum), mops the floor while he wishes he was never born, knocks over a magic lamp while he does it, gets knocked out by that lamp, and of course his wish came true: he wakes up in a version of Duckburg where he never existed. Shit gets real dark from that point on.

He finds Scrooge
malnurished, living in a barrel, because Donald wasn't there for the countless times that he protected the Money Bin.
The nephews
are living with Gladstone, and under his care they've grown spoiled, fat couch potatoes.

The worst was Gyro Gearloose. That shot of Donald realizing
his Helper died (does that thing have another name in English? I'm familiar with the Dutch versions)
is one of my favorites in all of Rosa's comics.

Don Rosa always got away with more than most of the other Disney comic artists. Along with Carl Barks, his comics are the only Disney comics worth caring about.

I agree. There is some other stuff that is okay, like some of the Italian authors, but Barks and Rosa is what it's all about.

Donald Duck really was a big part of my childhood, I still think that the Barks and Don Rosa comics are some of the best comics ever made.
We need a Duck cinematic universe.

Really happy about this thread and that GAF has its share of Duck fans. Here in Denmark, there already are collections of both Rosa's and Barks' stories, but tbh, I'm glad Fantagraphics is publishing their collections. While the Danish translators are usually really good, since both authors wrote their stories in English, I much prefer those versions, despite having grown up with the translations. There's just something about reading the original version that's hard to beat.

Been a big fan of the comics since I was a little kid and still am today.

Anyway, the amount of years might not be right, but:

This is also partly a comment to the guy who mentioned that everyone here read the weekly Donald Duck magazine growing up: that really was the case. I don't know how it is these days (I imagine kids are more into superhero comics now, what with all those movies and videogames), but back in the day seemingly everyone was familiar with comics, with the big three being Donald Duck, Asterix and Tintin. It was actually considered an important part of our European heritage (the latter two I mean, although there were also a lot of European artists working on the Ducks).

It's funny, I was never interested in the cartoon version of Donald. It just didn't seem like the same character. I know Ducktales was based on the Carl Barks universe, but even that felt off to me. The comics were the real deal. I still remember how big of an event the release of every new issue of Don Rosa's 'Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck' was. Just, great, great stuff. It's a shame Disney would never allow that version of the Ducks to be faithfully translated to the screen.

True that, the Dutch translators really knocked it out of the park with their naming back in the 40s(?). Willie Wortel, Guus Geluk, Oom Dagobert, de Zware Jongens - I've been reading the original English versions of Life and Times recently, and I prefer it to the Dutch versions except for the naming.

Does the English version have the same sort of acronym jokes for the woudlopers?
You know like.

B.R.A.L.L.E.N.D.E. B.U.L.L.E.B.A.K. - Breedsprakige en Robuuste Afdwinger van Lovenswaardige Listigheid, Eindeloos Nijver Doorzettingsvermogen en Eerlijkheid, tevens Bestrijder van Uitzonderlijk Lafhartige Luisheid, Ergerniswekkend Broddelwerk en Amateuristische Knoeierij
Love those.

My favorite Disney character by far. Recently I got the first two volumes of The Walt Disney Treasure for Donald Duck. Fuck the prices for the last two volumes though, Volume 3 - Volume 4. They are extremely well made DVD's, shame I didn't know shit about them back in the day or I would have jumped all over it, now I gotta wait for a sensible seller or just cough up the dough.

Love those.

They do, but obviously the jokes are often completely different as the translators had to be pretty creative to make the acronyms work.

Yep.

A scene from Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck which is unlike anything ever seen in Disney comics. Not linking the full picture, just in case someone wants to avoid spoilers:

Scrooge's father Fergus dies

Yeah, that's a great moment. There is also another part where a young Scrooge has his darkest moments. Won't spoil it for anyone still planning to read, but it involves
Scrooge basically sacking an African village and burning it to the ground.
. It's Scrooge himself exhibiting the worst of humanity, instead of one of his villains. Of course Don Rosa doesn't leave it at that and uses that moment to show Scrooge full of regret later and him learning about the values of keeping some sense of morality in his adventuring, but man, that was a shocking moment.

Of course most of Don Rosa's comics are silly jokes and fun adventuring, but he wasn't afraid to turn them into actual characters and to pull those characters towards some dark, dark corners at times. It felt like this weird, indie, underground comic at times, which just happened to use one of the biggest licenses in the world. It put him miles and miles above any other Disney artist, and we'll probably never get anything like it again.

I wish I could find a picture of that scene I described, but my Google-skills are failing me.
