Rhythm Tengoku: The Best+ |Import OT| The music plays on and on

Completed the main story, and these are some of my thoughts:

As it says, being a "Best+" title, that is what it is, and it doesn't go too far to make itself unique. That being said, I think the new rhythm games are fun. I could play the sumo one all day. And they never fail to make new rhythm games that are just surreal. The ones they picked from the past are pretty good. Obviously, there are some I would have preferred that didn't make it in (Bon Odori, Hanabi, or Toss Boys from GBA, for example), but there were nice surprises as well.

The controls fixes the timing problems I had in Fever because of the squishiness of the A button on the Wiimote, but I still vastly prefer the touchscreen controls in Gold. I ended up using the simple touch mode for some of the games that don't require anything other than the A button press or hold, and it just feels so much better. In merging the gameplay from the three previous systems, there's definitely something lost from each, and the game doesn't really define its own "groove." It does the job and that's about it.

I have mixed feelings of the new scoring system. On the one hand, it makes the grading tiers more lenient which I can't say I dislike. But it does make getting medals really easy and there's less satisfaction in that now.

I think the game having no rhythm toys and very few endless games (the only one that's fun in this one is bacteria doc) make this title seem rather short on replayability. GBA and Gold are still the best in this regard. There's quite a bit of unlockable stuff for sure, but getting more rhythm games that are not part of the main story is done through getting perfects, and the other stuff is done by grinding for coins. In inverting the reward system, it feels like a chore, as opposed to the previous games because perfects were for unlocking non-important bonus content like the music tracks and for 100%-ing the game. The challenge train stuff is fun, but you need coins to play them.

The story and characterizations they added to the game are substantial and it is pretty cute and funny, but then again, you can argue as to whether this was even necessary to begin with and all of the dialogue does slow the game progression quite a bit. I think a lot of the enjoyment factor is in the dialogue -- the story, the chats in the cafe, and some rhythm games like the alien encounter one, and you miss quite a bit if you don't understand it.

really interesting impressions, it's sounding like a divisive entry, at least in some respects

i still haven't seen any significant video footage outside of that first announcement bit during the jp direct but it's good to hear the new games are up to snuff

i guess the only thing i'm worried about is that the artstyle will clash with previous games. again, i'm basing this entirely on what i saw in that first video snippet from the direct. do you guys think the new minigames stand out in any way, art-wise, or is it just more takeuchi goodness?

the art is takeuchi as fuck. and there's lots of it.

honestly, i think the new games are some of the most charming and funny in the whole series. it's also super great to have a collection of so many great games from throughout the series, it makes for a ton of content overall. but i feel like how the returning games were handled is also kinda misdirected. i would've much rather seen them featured in new remixes or new sequel versions than the weird tutorial prequel versions.

to be totally straight with you, i wasn't in love with what i saw of the game in the reveal trailer, so i tempered my expectations from the start. but i ended up very pleasantly surprised.

yup, we were in the same position then

i was obviously super excited for a new entry but the footage looked a bit iffy, so i'm glad to hear it ended up grabbing you!

as if the wait wasn't hard enough already

Yeah after playing it a bit the few odd choices still makes Gold the best version, but I would rank Best over the original and Fever.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
I guess I'm one of the few that never find DS really good and even rank it as the least great RH.

god i fucking love the clapping cats. i love it so much. i'm soooooo fucking glad i didn't get that one spoiled. was stifling my goddamn laughter in public when i first played it.

This new ranking system is gonna make me quite anal... but otherwise, fantastic. I'm sure this has been asked but what do I do with all the coins I'm getting?

Masked Man

I said wow
I played the arcade version of Rhythm Heaven several times, but I never owned the GBA or Wii games, so even though I know most of the recurring mini-games, this is actually my first time playing a good portion of them. :)

Dash Kappei

Not actually that important
The core of Rhythm Heaven has never been about score attack, so having online leaderboards for the small selection of rhythm games that are for setting high scores probably isn't worth the infrastructure if there isn't a console-wide leaderboard system.

Totally disagree.
I've been a huge fan of the series since Gold released on GBA and it doesn't mean the games can't evolve with an endless mode for when you "beat" the game, same thing that irks me in Warioware games... they just don't think it's important, again NES Remix is another proof of that, how could they fail to provide leaderboards in a score attack based game? The smallest indies can have leaderboards, I'm sure Nintendo can sort it out as well.

But hey, I'm super happy we got another game in the series and hopefully we'll hear about its localization's plans during Treehouse' live.

Pay for challenge guards, train challenge attempts, and items at the shop.
The last 2 are optional, but the challenge guardians are required.
You can get orbs via train challenge or perfect runs to buy mini-games.

Yeah I have to agree that so far from what I've played, the new songs for new content and remixes are great, but the new songs/arrangements for old games are kind of lacking.

Challenge mode adds so much to the game.
The songs on fast forward are pretty great.

Yeah it´s like the arcade game of the first Rhythm Tengoku. It´s absolutely wonderful.

Fast mode is so much fun.

Right now I´m struggling to get a perfect on remix car. I´ve had it appear twice just to taunt me. The part with the light bulbs is totally owning me.

I just did it in fast mode as well, haha, not a chance. I love this, it reminds me of the first game and it´s difficulty with the drum sessions.

:D

And I haven´t even tried playing multiplayer yet. This will probably be my number one 3ds game.

The Perfect Monster challenge (where the TV keeps shrinking) is so intense. I can breathe after the song stops.

Any tips for medaling Ninja? It is the only one I have not done.

It wasn't too horrible, but it is kind of tedious when I just want to progress from one game to the next. It kind of detracts from the simplicity and clarity of purpose the previous games had.

It's annoying and shouldn't be in there.
The game is fun besides all that annoying text stuff.
It's just keeping me away from playing the actual game.

The official soundtrack CD mixes of the GBA game sound higher-quality than the AAC files on the cartridge itself. Not surprising. Karate from the GBA game (Karate Man) is 2 MB as an MP3 ripped from the CD, but 1/2 MB on the 3DS cartridge.

Yeah, the kaiju ones are intense. I beat one just by a hair.

For Ninja you just need to match the rhythm of the arrows.

kaiju rule tempo up exhibition match

just fuck me up

liking challenge train more and more. some of this stuff is really testing me, lol.

god there's a lot to do in this game

edit: oh god i just got to the final world I WANT TO GET OFF THIS RIDE

tempo up rhythm rally 2

THIS SHOULDN'T BE LEGAL

Did anyone else tear up to one of the new rhythm games with the bears?

The build up to 58 seconds was just too much to me, in the end I had tears streaming down my face when playing it. But I hope I'm not the only one!

This is incredible, oh my god. One of the best rhythm games I've seen in any Rhythm Heaven title to date, and that's a very tall order.

This is just brilliant... and genuinely touching, especially the twist at the end!

The names in Japanese are:

Morimori remix
Hachihachi remix
Machine remix
Orange remix
Donut remix
Latest (haircut) remix
Bird remix
Left remix
Right remix
Final remix

allow me to save you some future stress:

some single button games, like rhythm pluck and interpreter, allow you to use both the A button and the d-pad for input. it's extremely difficult to complete some of the tempo-up perfect challenges using just a single button for input, so be sure to make use of this!

Oh, that's good to know, thanks! Though I'm going to forever call the doughnut one Krispy Kremix lol. Nice to see that there are ten remixes total.

By the way, I've been looking at videos of the game and was wondering, does anyone know what the menu options are after you beat a train challenge?

Keep playing, quit

Then if you select keep playing:

Same course, different course

god, everything in the final world is "they want me to do WHAT?" feels good to get owned by a rhythm heaven game again

I just finished playing the demo and I couldn't stop smiling and bopping my head. I need this game now. Might just buy it from the e-shop instead of importing.

I know Nintendo will announce localization, if not during the Digital Event, then by Treehouse Live. I've been watching bits and bits of this game and I'm getting more hyped by the day.

I had to click because I may not ever be good enough to get to it. That's awesome! So... is it just the character or the song too?

I'm visiting SanFran and had a chance to finally try out the Rhythm Tengoku arcade machine.

I guess the tempo up idea originated here. Doing the first set in tempo up was pretty insane! It was especially cool because the sprites are also different in this mode.

And the whole game is higher-resolution!

Waaait a second. Was it possible to use both A and the D-Pad for Rhythm Pluck in the original Rhythm Tengoku?

Yes.

//ようこそ。[;
Welcome.[;

//Aボタン、または十字ボタンで 毛をぬいてネ![;

//Pluck/pull the hairs with the A or directional buttons![;

Pluck the hairs with A or the D-Pad![;

//The parts where there's a lot, it's easier if you use both hands.[;

Overwhelmed? Try alternating A and the D-Pad.[;

"Quiz" in Rhythm Heaven GBA also lets you do this: you only need to match the number of button presses, not the specific D-Pad / A button that was pressed.

That is how you can tat-a-tat them for the extreme versions. Opti9nal but helps immensly.

This is especially helpful in the arcade version. See above bout the up-tempo in that version. The operator has the option to lock or unlock the full game.
