Nomura on ATB combat from that Engadget interview:
And I completely agree
Persona 5 is turn based
HE HAS RETURNED.
By any chance, do you know if Nomura was appointed FFVII's director before or after the FFXV shakeup?
They won't be using the AC movie models it seems.

Grandia + Chrono Trigger combat would be the best of the ages. He's against it happening in the same way that it happened in FF7 where characters would jump back and forth in the same spot. That's why I suggested something like Grandia's battle system. It's still menu driven and you have no direct control over the characters, but it's also constant action and never really feels like you're waiting your turn.
yea, ffxiii is still ATB, watch some gameplay of that and you cant really complain about how it animates. Slow it down a tad and give me control over the whole party and it would be perfect. Make more skills import in general battles and things like that as wellIt does look bizarre, countless of jokes have been made about the gentlemanly nature of turn based combat.
That doesn't mean it won't be turn based however.
I think Grandia's combat system is patented, though.

I like the idea of making a faster-paced, "cinematic" version of the ATB system. Having AI-controlled party members in a FF7 remake would just feel wrong, I don't know. If they could make a real-time action system where you can change control between party members on the fly (all with their unique battle-styles, of course), and a gambit-like system to assign your party's general behavior, then I'd be totally ok with it, but I mean, if they couldn't even keep that in a game with a much smaller roster of playable characters (XV), then I don't have much faith of them pulling it off here.
I still can't believe this thread exists! 10 years, mang.

Versus had it T.T
I can certainly buy that he'd be very depressed after FF7.Two friends died which he feels responsible for and he's definitely responsible for a lot of deaths caused after he gave Sephiroth the Black Materia(it kind of annoys me that they didn't really point that out in AC). With how much trauma he suffers in the original you'd expect him to be psych ward or seeing a psychiatrist.
With that said, it's a valid complaint to say that it was too overtly portrayed in the movie. He was still an oddball around the end of FF7. That should have remained.
I just don't see how to portray that attitude when there's so many problems happening in his life. He's struggling with geostigma, he knows other people are dying of it as well, add in what we said about losing people dear to him and it's no wonder he's a mopey mess. Especially when we don't see Clouds personality after the meteor strike in the original game, we see him confident before everything becomes a mess.
If AC had went in a different direction and Cloud was depressing, it would be very odd.
I'm actually curious if this game will outsell XV...
Maybe if Square packed a FFVIIR demo in with XV it would push sales far more than the XV demo ever did for Type0, lol.
Sure but even a wrecked person can have a moment of sarcasm. I think a lot of us would've been fine with just a passing jape or two. lol
Oh well. I'm gonna love hearing him say "Let's mosey".
"But we can't have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy, then jumping back to wait for their next turn. That would be bizarre."

So apparently they will change the battle. I am really deceived by this retarded comment from Nomura (not that I ever liked that guy but...)
So yeah, in my wildest dreams I hope the battle is same but just visually different. But reality is that they will think the ATB system + limit breaks + materia system might be outdated. I am preparing to be deceived!!
For a great remake you don't change what the game is at its core. Look for Resident Evil Gamecube remake to see how perfection is achieved.

I hope so but I already have much fear about losing that combat style. this quote does nothing, but feed that fear. Not necessarily so, he just commenting presentation at least should changed, you certainly can design turn based battle without those "hop back in line" gesture.

I called up a buddy of mine that I don't see much to talk to him about it, we became friends in 4th grade when I was stuck on ff7 and was asking around the class to see if anyone had played itI just got back from visiting my mom and while there me and my younger bro talked about this for about 30 mins recalling our favorite parts of ffvii and imagining them in the remake. We dont have alot in common but our love for ffvii is definitely one thing we do. Just wanted to share the magic of this game with my little story

As long as we get full party control like the original, I'm satisfied. If not, I'll probably bail out while I'm ahead.

Definitely. Even XIII kinda-sorta did that.
And with a simple comment Nomura managed to kill any hopes for this remake to be good.
Agh, now I am super worried. There's no way he'd actually make it an ARPG, would he?
XIII battles look great. Now SE has to figure out how to give us full party control and that's how I think VII:RE's battles will go down (Including running up to enemies and then the battle screen shows up; best option imo).
anything is possible brehNomura, PLEASE don't fuckin do this. You have no idea how long I have waited for this. You want some differences in the positioning, fine, but DO NOT change the battle system. It doesn't look stupid, it's stylistic! Look at Lost Odyssey.
Agh, now I am super worried. There's no way he'd actually make it an ARPG, would he?
Sigh, Square just hates turn based anymore except Bravely Default...Sorry Square but the new battle systems have sucked since X. XII and XV are alright but not as fun when it's much harder to have strategy involved. I hope they at least keep something like the gambits from FFXII for the AI because you know it's just gonna be another ARPG-esque game like FFXV where you only control cloud...At least the wait will be 100x easier now.
It definitely was jarring to see him become as mopey as he did, it was just understandable with the plot.
Though I do think Cloud wasn't just a confident sarcastic jerk. He's super emotionally fucked up and I prefer takes where he displays both, not one over the other. The real Cloud is more soft and insecure while the Cloud we see is a false persona. Then at the end he's a mixture of his old and fake self.
