I finally got around to watching this a few weeks ago but I forgot to make a thread until now, something Die Antwoord-related popped up on my Facebook feed and I felt compelled to discuss the fucking weird nightmare that is this movie. Honestly, being a Bomkamp fan I had high hopes off the back of the stellar District 9 and the pretty-but-underwhelming Elysium.

You don't even have to start poking holes in the plot for it to make absolutely no sense whatsoever, and I'm genuinely surprised that Hugh Jackman found himself in this mess. Everything from Chappie's existential crisis of choosing between being a fokken gansta or an upstanding citizen, to Hugh's character basically
starting a civil war for the sake of having an excuse to use his Metal Gear.
Don't even get me started on Chappie's creator... even given his circumstances, both his dialogue and motivations are just ridiculous.

Yolandi: Chappie... who did this?
Chappie: A man... in a van.
Yolandi: A man in a van?
Chappie: Yeah...
Yolandi: Did he put you in the van?
Chappie: Yeah...
Yolandi: Do you know this man?
Chappie: No... And there were children, also... And they threw fire, even though I said, "please".

this movie made me go from super sad :( to super happy :) to super sad in matters of minutes, multiples times. From the scene you quote to the car stealing sequence for exemple

A very decent movie. Not as good and original as D9 but defenitly better than Elysum.

Oh and Hugh Jackman character and subplot are totally unecessary.

I was pretty disappointed in this since I had hoped that Elysium was a fluke, but yeah... Neill has skills but he desperately needs a better writer in his life.

Felt like it was a two hour Die Antwoord music video. As always he has a keen eye for design and how to fit things in a real world space but holy fuck he can't write to save himself. I'd say I'm worried for whatever bullshit he's cooking up for his Alien film but the movies haven't been good since 1986 so who gives a shit. At least it will look nice!

I sorta liked where the first half of the movie was going (how Chappie was learning, how the different characters had an influence on his growth, etc.), but then all that crazy shit started with the second half and I was like "wtf". Movie went completely off the deep end. Didn't really like the ending either.

But as Hagi said, it did look pretty.

When "Enter the Ninja" started playing over the
emergence of mecha-Yolandi
, it felt like my entire history with the band was coming full circle and it was surprisingly moving.

That said, the film should have kept the tone and energy of the carjacking segment for the whole thing.

The movie had so many plot holes. Like why not just test your fucking program on your coffee slave. Also,
having America die, but the other two live on was stupid.

Dr. Suess present's the dialogue of Chappie.

Can someone just give Neil a Halo script so we can save his career?

Save his career?
He's done nothing but make money so far.
It's fine to think that he's fallen off, since District 9 was a strong debut, but he's yet to flop.

I personally thought Chappie was incredibly charming and visually striking, even if it was kind of dumb.

Not quite sure how Die Antwoord found themselves in this movie.

Really fucking bizarre.

Felt like half a good movie.

Despite its flaws i still really enjoyed the movie. Admittedly it would have sucked without chappie but he is there for most of the movie.

Actually i don't think either of his last 2 films have made money. Chappie was a flop maybe not a huge one but i think it lost money. As far as i know elysium didn't make money either.

Absolutely loved it. I have a feeling it will be enjoyed as a cult-classic for many years to come, it's just that insane.

Also this.

Actually Chappie flopped. Elysium didn't do all that well. His career is slipping fast.

Bomkamp is a visual only director, sure, district 9 was pretty cool...but he is just a one trick pony. After Elysium, I don't think I will pay to watch anything he comes out with in theater.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
This movie was such trash

Chappie himself was great, but this robot deserved to be in a better film. Those two gangster siblings or whatever, Die Antwoord, were beyond irritating. I warmed up a *tiny little bit* to the girl by the end but I don't ever want to see them on screen again.

How the hell did Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman end up in this tragic mess btw? They're both A-Listers with no need to slum it in films like this. It boggles the mind, truly.

i thought it was fun. will probably buy the blu ray.
die antwoord werent annoying i dont think.

I wanted to like this so much, but the plot progression, dialogue and character motivations were just a mess. I kind of felt the same about Elysium, but that film had some redeeming features that I felt Chappie just lacked unfortunately.

I actually enjoyed it despite every character, even Chappie, being unlikeable douchebags.

I laughed out loud at Chappie yelling "Go to sleep!" As he chucked ninja stars at the police.

This movie was terrible. It failed on multiple levels. Die Antwoord fucking sucked and they were in damn near every scene. I finished it by some miracle of self-restraint.
