I'm a Verendus believer now. He is a mystery. I hope the other things he said is true also about a new Suikoden, FF XII HD and Xenosaga HD.

didn't Verendus also hint @ a Legend of Dragoon sequel?

What scares me about making it completely 1:1 is the fucking scope of that. Remember those forests that you just ran through before?

FFVII_Wutai_WM.jpg

Now they're a fully realized ecological system with actual trees, animals, rivers, ponds, etc. I just can't comprehend the magnitude of this project

Oh yeah I heard people saying that 1:1 scale of FFVII's overworld would be wtfhuge, but just to be clear, i'm not saying the whole forest for example should be explorable. I'm assuming the forest area is a fairly linear path?

I don't care if the WHOLE thing isn't translated with the exact scale and distances from FFVII, but I just want an overworld that is comparable to the structure of FFVII's where everything is full sized rather than me being a colossal giant running around on a miniature map.

The forest is still a part of the world map. It's not a different screen or anything. Only for battles is it a different screen.

They shouldn't make the whole world an open world. Have large open spaces to travel, but have them stitched together. Once you reach a certain distance, just travel you to the next key area. I think there are only a couple of spots in FFVII were just plain random exploring was rewarding.

I don't like the idea of individual open areas...how do you stitch them together when you are flying around in the airship?

Part of the appeal of that map is that you could just literally go anywhere once you had the right vehicles

are you seriously trying to argue that Nomura was more important to VII than the director of the original? lol

I don't think people are arguing that Nomura had more influence than Kitase or Sakaguchi for FF7. But he was more than "just character designer" for FF7. Under the current circumstances(Kitase doesn't direct games anymore, and Sakaguchi is not at Square Enix), Nomura is probably the best option for the director role.

Imagine if "Director: Motomu Toriyama" popped up during the trailer....

Lol I actually want him on the project. Provided the more sane people will stop his bullshit.

Yea honestly I wouldn't mind him on the project, as long as he is not the director or any high position.

What's up with the open world argument anyway? Have people been asking for this to go an "open world" route? I mean I wouldn't mind it, but i'd be surprised to see people asking for that. I mainly hope the overworld is largely the same but just with a 1:1 scale.

i just want an open world where we can essentially do the same things we could in FFVII, i want the buggy where you could pass through the desert of corel and shallow rivers, i want the busted up plane where you can travel in shallow water to reach the temple of the ancients, i want the submarine where you can explore the depths, and especially the highwind, i want to see those specific stuff like the huge force field in the northern crater while flying the highwind or those events like ultima weapon soaring the skies and the player ramming it, and when we finally destroy it, to show us ultima weapon blowing up and leaving a path to the ancient forest, the diamond weapon comming out of the sea and slowly walking to midgar, ruby wapon in the coral desert, emerald under the sea, even expanding on sapphire weapon

seriously, i loved all this stuff

However much I want to be excited, I think the best thing for me to do is assume the worst and will not be a game I pick up in the end.

I really don't want them to change the battle system, but from the quotes I've seen all signs are pointing that they are.

I honestly hope it's not the case though, as I've wanted to see a remake for this game for a long time now. But I never thought if it ever got announced, that I would run into this issue in the combat potentially being changed away from one of the reasons why I really loved FF VII.

Oh I think I misinterpreted what people meant by that. I thought people meant they wanted an open world from the start for some reason. FFVII doesn't really become something like an open world until quite a ways through the game.

The reason I don't want them to do a modern open world kind of game is because then they'll want to do stuff like add side quests from NPCs. Something I enjoyed about the side stuff in FFVII is that none of it felt like filler side stuff. Everything that was optional felt like it was worth doing on its own, without the need for some sort of reward or to grind up for something.

I am okay if rewards from these side quests are materia/weapons/bracelets. Speaking of defensive equipment, will they add armour/legs/belt/hats because the original only had bracelet as accessory?

It's very amusing to see you try and downplay Nomura's importance on the original FFVII Project.
I've done no such thing. I've only said what is true, which is, he's not nearly as central to the game as his delusional fans try to say he is.

Advent Children illustrated that with him being in complete control it barely resembled the original game in any way.

Open world in the sense that it should have a persistent large world.

I am sure most people want nothing to with actual "open world game design".It should retain the strong narrative driven pacing of the original

More fun sidequests are welcome though.

I'm thinking it'll be similar to FFXII, a halfway point between the world map and the "zones" of later games.

I hope not, that works for FFXII and it's combat system.

I want to experience the grandeur of escaping Midgar and having a large world lay before more. Doesn't have to be to scale, but I'm sure compromises will be made.

I think, either it will be Nomura's original world map concept for Versus, or something like Dragon Quest 8, only a tad bit bigger(2x the size).

My biggest fear for this remake so far is that they'll have to compromise the size of the world map and straight up cut some locations deemed unimportant and/or condense parts of the story. I really cannot imagine how they could feasibly pull off the entirety of the world of FF7 in a 1:1 scale unless they have like an Avatar-like budget for this project. There are far too many locations and the scale of the world is just much larger than what you usually see on games nowadays. And that's not even taking things like underwater exploration into account. That interview with Nomura saying he isn't afraid to cut things got me even more worried that we might see an adapted, less expansive version of the original.

Unless they surprisingly choose to keep the original map's scale, which I wouldn't be against, but I'm sure it'd disappoint a lot of people.

I hope they change the materia system by having specific materia for each character, only allowing certain characters to use certain materia plus add new materia of course. That way each character would be useful and play a role in the battles.

I don't care if it's zones or open world, action or FFXII style ATB, all I want is for the battles and exploration to be seamless, freely controlled third person camera, no random encounters, and each and every monster to be visible.

Only certain, older PS3s. You may need to hook up your PSX, depending on your version.

All ps3's play ps1 games... dont know where you heard differently from? and i've had every ps3 (phat/slim/super slim) its ps2s you cant play except on old ps3s(with bc or with CFW)

Guess I'll be playing on my PS3 then. Also, how bad is the steam port of the game?
Supposedly this is really bad port of the game.

/\ Steam version is the best version of the game actually.

I wonder if Sony actually has a project planned and pre-production done for a LoD game, and are waiting to see if SE finds success with all these JRPGs they'll be putting out, and then decide from that.

If they put it out there in the along with all the games already coming, that would be really awesome.

This remake should gimme an answer as to why the most powerful man on the planet doesn't have his own private jet... and why he'd travel all the way to Rocket Town to steal a one-seater plane, instead of just having that seaplane docked at Costa del Sol commandeered @_@;

Unrelated to the remake but I hope another sequel is possible! Neither AC nor DoC went into how exactly people are still getting by without mako. The reactors are all shutdown right?? What's powering everything?!

Has anyone ever asked Kitase why he stopped directing games? He co-directed FF6 and then directed 7 and 8. Then just stopped. He has an unbelievable track record as a director, so it's weird that he just stopped all of a sudden.

Has this been posted yet? I think this might ease some worries people may have about things being cut. Check it out.

I can't wait to play all the mini games again. Motorcycle chase, snowboarding, submarine battles and chocobo racing. Most of my time is going to be wasted at the gold saucer trying to get the golden ticket, champion belts, and Cloud's final limit break.

Oh god, I didn't hear about QTEs being gone from KHIII. Megaton!

I also love the fact that Nomura likes to put a bunch of minigames in his games. That was never really a big concern for me, considering the KH games. Hopefully they'll be fun in the remake too.

This was mentioned before. Kitase needed a break after directing Chrono Trigger, FFVI, FFVII, and FFVIII. Guess he was mentally exhausted after directing that many games in one stretch.

I'm up to this place again! Just say NO to open world style or else we risk losing out on places like this where I still get hopelessly lost 18~ years later x.x

Oh an wtf at that Elixir trick. I know what I'm gonna be doing for like 20 mins when I get there!

No way. That's a key area where the recent FFs have gotten it completely wrong. It has to be open-world or it's simply not even FFVII any more.

As for the episode of the Honeybee inn and for it being lost in everyone’s nostalgic memories, please don’t worry.

Can't wait to enjoy this scene in all its HD glory.
The minigames are being proceeded into full-fledged production although not necessarily attached yet. Since it was already proposed by the production team, it’s a stage that was confirmed in planning.
How will snowboard work? Imagine Red on board too...

Why would people want a 1:1 scale world map?

Just so you don't have to transition between points of interest and something else?

Man, FF world maps were the most charming thing of that franchise - and gaming as a whole is a little worse off for not adopting that feature to a greater extent! (IMO).

I mean, I loved the feeling of world traversal, without the needling impracticalities of running around a big ass area getting to points of interests as we're experiencing now with games like GTA, Witcher 3, Skyrim, etc - games that give you a 1:1 world map, and then give you a fast travel button to compensate for been just to big to get around in (although they seem great for sandboxy exploration - the reality is that the content to make that exploration satisfying, rather than same shit different place - is staggering in quantity and cost).

Taking the world map of yore and updating it for modern game design tropes is something that has me excited man.

And you can still have 1:1 scale at points of interests, just as it was in the older games.

But, a larger scale than the previous FF games is welcome - would be nice to have Midgar large enough that it can have multiple entry/exit points, and that overworld traversal feels like a bit of a trek on foot.

Probably talked about, but this was interesting.

Adam Boyes, head of third-party developer relations at PlayStation, told me at E3 that he’s known about Square’s Final Fantasy VII remake for a year. It was a fun secret to keep.

...

Sony officials knew about the forthcoming remake for about a year, well before the notorious December announcement of the port of the PC port of the original FFVII to PS4. What was supposed to be a fun announcement about the polished PC version of the ‘97 PSOne classic coming to PS4 became a moment of dashed expectations. Final Fantasy producer Shinji Hashimoto at appeared on stage at the big PlayStation Experience fan event, started introducing something FFVII-related to suddenly-shocked fans... only to then reveal that he was just talking about a PC port, not the long-demanded remake. Fans in the audience seemed bummed. Teased, maybe. Trolled, perhaps. It was unintentional, Boyes said. “You learn with these things.”

It doesn't have to be 1:1, but if I can't hop in the Highwind and fly across the globe, under control the entire time, uninterrupted and land on a remote island to see what lives there, what secrets may be on the cave there, what items I can steal...well, then what the hell is the point of a remake anyway? Might as well make it another shitty movie and call it a day.

Lol what kinda of reaction did Boyes expect? How the hell could they not have seen it coming?

Fixed.
