Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition (Out Now)

I think the lack of rain and snow is a good thing for the newcomers as well. ;) I'd say the downside is, that the main tour's beginning was pretty underwhelming introduction to the game.

Again, I totally agree.
Maybe what they should do is add the first level of the original tour to the startline tour and add some mild weather to one of two of those races to give newcomers a slightly more gentle introduction.

Yeah, it might be a good idea to give them the rookie and amateur stages of the tour.

I just recently played the Startline tour for the first time myself, and it was challenging even for me, after playing the game for months. So, I can imagine it being a pretty steep challenge for the new players.

Regarding people's mixed feelings... would it have been difficult to add in some different controls? I mean, have games not had that option before? Would it be likely to see?

I dont mind the way the game feels. I can understand people dont like it though

I think I'll try this for a month as a the free trail, or until I plat it, whichever comes first. If I feel like this weird hybrid of sim/arcade racing grows on me, I'll get the full game and most of the dlc no questions. If not...then I guess Forza 5/Horizon 2/6 and the new NFS are the only games I'm focusing on. I have Project Cars as well but...lol.

Like I said before, I don't hate the game. It's just the controls are the only thing holding me back right now from liking this as much as I want to.

Well, I've played the game for an hour, no multilayer though, so here are some thoughts.

The game isn't easy, which is fine. But, I'd like to see some kind of mode that really helps train you on how to play/drive. I have to admit though, it's one of the few games where I actually enjoy driving by myself around the tracks. If I sit close to the TV the cockpit view really makes the game come to life. Can't imagine a VR headset with this game, that would be amazing experience. I'm not hating on the controls, it's just my ability to get better playing is kinda limited because I don't really know how to improve my driving skills other than drive. I'd like some instruction or something.

The HDR lighting is too high for my tastes. It can sometimes create the illusion of crushed blacks and whites for a few seconds, which is kind of what it is supposed to do, I just don't like so much of it. It does look nice though. Maybe DLC sunglasses or something. lol.

Game looks great, at times downright mind-blowing, and at other times just really really really good. Running it on a CRT and they did a great job on this game, the AA isn't perfect but the IQ looks really nice, much better than some screenshots would lead you to believe.

Would really like to see more graphic options for the user. I'd like to adjust some of the effects to suit my tastes. The lighting is incredible at times, but that HDR bloom effect can just seem annoying at times. That said, the game can look fucking bonkers amazing sometimes.

I'm afraid to go online yet, I just suck so bad at this game right now.

Different controls? If I'm not mistaken, you can map the buttons wherever you please. For instance, my throttle is on cross, even though that might not be the smartest. I'm finding with the faster classes I need to ease the throttle. Should probably put it back on trigger. Lol

I'd kill to see what this looks like in HD on a CRT.

To be even fairer the post he's responding to suggests that there shouldn't be games in the middle ground because developers should choose to please either arcade players or sim players.
Which is a false argument anyway as there many people who actually like these games which don't fall entirely at either end of the spectrum.

+1 I'm definitely in that group. I prefer arcade racers but found out randomly I quite like a bit of sim in my racers when I checked out Shift. That lead me to Grid. Love both. True sim racing is monotonous to me. But the right balance fits my tastes. Its part of the reason I've been so disappointed in the way DC launched. I really feel like the racing genre needed (& still needs) the right title to come along & shake things up. Even though DCs launch means its not that title, I'm still looking forward to checking it out mainly due to it being a hybrid sim/arcade racer.

I'm a bit gunshy to download it yet, however. I dont want my expectations to be tarnished again. So I'm thinking maybe its best to wait a week...? How has the experience been for other PS+ers so far?

To be clear: Upgrading the PS+ edition is the same as buying the regular edition, right? It's the exact same content, you can keep it even if you stop subscribing to PS+, etc? There's no downside, it's simply cheaper?
I thought we'd lose access to the game if ps plus runs out, even if we upgrade ps+ edition. Can anyone confirm that. If not, then its a pretty great deal.

It looks really nice, sometimes the lighting is just spot on amazing, and as much I love my CRT's I'd really like to see this game on a big giant plasma.OLED, or something. Just to get the size of everything in the game closer to a real scale would be awesome. It's not the cleanest game I've ever seen, but I down-sample some PC games so that's what I consider cleanest. But holy fuck ballz can it look incredible. I was playing it up close with surround sound turned up, and had a nasty crash in the rain. It was the first time I saw the windshield crack and I blinked and jumped. That's why I think a game like this would be awesome with VR, just make it like you are seeing out of the helmet so you feel like the driver would. Not sure how long it would be fun though, but I'd love to experience that.

This is the first driving game I've played in years so I expected it to be hard and my driving to suck but not this much.

Also I know I didn't pay anything for it but they sure make the ability to buy cars very prominent in the game. Feels like an iPhone free to play microtransaction fest

I tried the game and found some of the cars I've raced to be unpredictable. Actually all the cars are to some degree and it is with the way they oversteer that I have a problem with. The loss of grip is gradual with the initial screeching noise and a bit of tail coming out, but thereafter its a mess. Sometimes more throttle keeps a steady slide, sometimes it goes too far and it is ALWAYS impossible to save the slide quickly if it progresses beyond that sweet spot the game likes which really annoys me since the car just comes to a crawl sideways. The biggest issue however is how quickly oversteer becomes understeer in the most unrealistic of ways where regardless of the speed and banking being the same, a tail slide that is corrected turns into a front end wash that makes the car feel like a fat pig for no reason.

Its like the game cant decide if its a sim-cade or an arcade with the way it likes the cars to dance around turns at a slight drift.

There were some great choices for Startline, but Dam Busters? NoThankYou.jpeg, lol
I myself probably wouldn't have put it in there... personally I found it more difficult than both the Venom Hot Laps.

YEAH!! Fuck this race, i can't finish top 3 even when i drive like Lewis Hamilton....
Here's how I finished it: I drove like Maldonado ;)

I love the tracks in this game. Japan in general has an amazing flow of the tracks. I think there is only one single track I don't like in the entire game it's the observatory in chile I hate it I dont understand it and I can't drive on it with any cars at any speed.
I love it. From memory it was one of the few tracks that showed the importance of weight transfer when going around sequential corners, as in "if I want to tackle that corner faster, I need to take this line through the one before it so the car leans into it better" or something. Honestly don't think there's a track in this game I don't like.

I will often just go into single events, pick a time trial, maybe turn on light precipitation, and just drive to chill out. It can be very relaxing.
I try and do that, but forget to turn ghosts off so I always invariably end up trying to compete :/

Do you have the DLC packs? There is another race where you have to take the VUHL (Vuhl proof I think) around the track, that one sucks so much, absolutely hated the car on this track.
Nooooo. I mean, not in my case :) That taught me delicate throttle control. Thing I love about this game is, every tour event seems to teach me something different, whether it's handling or car positioning or just subtle car/track differences. Never come away from it feeling like I'm worse at the game because of it.

Ooff, lots of losing in my future then.
Don't stress about it. You'll be surprised and happy that they didn't when you see how quickly you improve. We all have faith in you!

Yup.
I see this game as a spiritual successor to the arcade versions of Sega Rally and Sega Rally 2 (minus rallying, obviously).
It is an attractive game set in distinctive and well themed locales.
It has a handling model that is challenging with out getting bogged down in simulation and without the bizzare eccentricities of some arcade games.
It bears enough resemblance to actual driving (weight shifting affecting balance, oversteer and understeer for example) to provide a challenge by simultaneously allowing the user to apply knowledge of racing techniques whilst maintaining a sense of drama and fun.
Its all about racing therefore it allows you to get into the racing quickly. Pick your car and go, much like the arcade games did.
It also has no uneccesary driving aids. You need to learn the tracks and you need to learn the cars if you want to get good.
Back in the days when my reactions were probably quicker I used to set really good times on those Sega Rally games. I didn't do it the first time I played it. It took practice. With practice comes setting faster times and the genuine feeling of reward for that practice.
Driveclub has all of that in abundance. Sadly I'm not in danger of getting top times on the leaderboards these days but it doesn't make the trying any less rewarding.
You say this reminds you of Sega Rally, but all I read from your post was that it's basically PGR5. And I agree completely ;)

I'm playing it on a plasma and it looks pretty amazing, save for the pixel dithering or chasing or whatever it's called that comes with using plasmas. And some color banding, but I think that's going to happen with pretty much any kind of display (that isn't CRT) these days :(

Spent well over an hour on this game and I am glad I waited for the PS+ version. I just can't get used to the handling. I feel like I am usually pretty good at racing games, but I am struggling on this one.The Ferrari race is the one especially killing me. The car spins out too much and it seems the AI never has the same sort of issues even though they take corners faster. Also, weather seems like something they should add gradually.

With any thing it takes time and practice, I was awful when I 1st started. Now I fly around the tracks with ease.

Exact same thoughts on that challenge. Its really hard. I make 1 mistake and I can never recover from it. Not to mention the weather goes absolutely psycho (looks amazing though) on you in the 3rd lap.

Are you trying to drift? I definitely recommend not trying to drift in races until you've got a handle on it from drift events. It's incredibly easy to either go off the track, or lose speed.

I don't think the AI drifts at all. They are simply slowing down to a speed they can take the corner without losing traction.
Use the AI's speed as a guide for how much you should brake to take the corner. You can take it faster, but it's a good guide when you're starting out.

Paid DLC content created and released after the game came out are now considered the same as mobile microtransactions now?

What?

LOL what? The PS+ Edition is like a demo but offers more stuff than your average demos. If you like it, just buy the full game. The base game comes with enough content (with all the free stuff) to justify a 60$ price tag now, and it is $24.99.

Man, that Pagani Zonda. It's almost like playing Wipeout.

Wait till you get in the One:1 the thing is near on uncontrollable. You can't risk hitting the gas till you know you are straight!

Spent every spare moment over the weekend playing this utter bastard of a game. Can't wait to play some more this evening.

I'm not normally a fan of racers. I like them for the first hour, while I'm winning, then they get too hard and i give up. But this game is so addictive. Started the afternoon yesterday constantly placing last in that Ferrari race, before finally managing to beat it just before midnight.

Definitely upgrading to the full version.

I was waiting for things like this.

I find it lovely when people gets a "reward" for opening their minds instead of "I like **** more and I dont care about ****".

Ok. I let my crt warm up for a good hour and played a lot more drive club.

Game looks insane. Just incredible. Just fucking fuck me.

I think I'll be purchasing the full version.

I can explain some of these things to you. I'm surprised by how many people who play sim-lights struggle with the concepts you are presenting as they are essentially just toned down versions of what you get once you turn the assists off in those games.

With your grip you have a shit load of it, by the time you start to slip that is usually the unsavable point in most sims and is feedback to tell you to adjust your speed otherwise you will hit the point of no return, this is a pretty standard concept in racing games it is just a bit later than most so you can get the most out of racing lines. In terms of drifting if you have ever made a drift set up in Forza or GT you approach it the same way though it is much more toned down and can be saved far easier, you essentially want to stay in the loss of grip section, feathering accelerate and counter steering to ensure you hold the drift, other times you may need to power through it but you will have to be ready for the backend going too far.

You also have to remember weight transfer if you have kicked the car one way then thrown it into another direction it is going to be harder to make any movements as the weight is currently going to be unbalanced. Same also applies to breaking as you have a very slight lock up and is different on various cars which prevents you from turning as smoothly as you would like, you can also use the breaks to manipulate weight transfer in your favour to set you up for the next corner.

As a day one player, the best advice I can give to anyone struggling with it, is to stick with it. I was not very good at all for the first week or two but then one day something just clicked with the handling and I've been playing no stop since then, loving it.

Practice really does help. Just pick a track with a few sharp turns and learn it. Start with a slower car and work up to faster cars, then do the same with a bit of weather and gradually turn it up to full on pissing it down and before long you should be able handle what the game throws at you.

Why are the online playlists so dead. Im constantly in matches against 1 or 2 other people in playlists that would normally be popular.

India or other tracks?

I've been seeing the same pretty limited population in non-India events for a while now. I think it is just down to a relatively small population of users.

If you try India events you should get nearly full lobbies (for now at least) particularly if you play at times of day when Europe is online. Also, races seem more popular than team races which in turn seem more popular than time trials (individual and team).

LOL, hyperbole much?

You can call it hyperbole if you want. I looked thru every single car after my first race and I couldn't choose any of them other than the car I started with. Whether its the way its presented or not, don't show me a bunch of cars, and then have it so that I can't use a single other one other than the one I start with for multiple races.

Even the cars that unlock with higher levels, I was so bad at driving that it would probably take me like 5 races just to hit level 2. 5 races seems like too many all with the same car, for a driving game that's about having lots of cars to choose from.

Seems like 3/4 of the online population are a bunch of assholes. Can't overtake someone on a straightaway without them trying to ram you into the wall.

Just played for about 2 hours, I loved the gameplay but the second event in the tour is giving me a hard time to beat.

Did not had the best impression graphically on the first race the game starts with, but the India tracks are stunning!! Inline with the comments that the graphics are somewhat inconsistent.

But overall really impressed with the game. Probably with MK8 will be my go to racer this gen.
