NPD Sales for July 2015

Sony has more "system seller" bundles for Holidays this year.

MS: Halo

Sony: CoD and Battlefront

MS could have Halo, Tomb Raider, and Fallout in bundles for the holidays. Fallout 4 will definitely be a system seller.

Also I can just see the new Rainbow Six being bundle bait for MS.

I can see Fallout being a system seller... I forget it.
Tomb Raider just no.

But I believe MS will focus on Halo bundle.

That's a much smaller gap between the PS4 and Xbone than I was expecting. Microsoft have done well to keep Sony sweating in NA.
It's amazing what cutting $150 off your original price, and throwing in a handful of free games, during the holiday season can do for your numbers. I doubt Sony is sweating anything right now.

If they do a price drop this year, I think it's fair to say they're sweating it a bit.

In case anyone is wondering about consoles cumulative sales

Edit: Another interesting info about MKX

Thanks for the info! Do we know how many consoles the One has sold in Europe? I'm wondering if it's less than 6 million in EU.

This discussion of who's "sweating", "desperate" or not is seriously the least productive thing that can't be talked about in this thread. It's a bunch of semantics based on different perspectives. Makes no sense to split hairs over whether or not a company is "sweating".

Of course not, Halo bundle is $500 dollars.

Tomb Raider bundle will be huge, like Assassin's Creed bundle last year.

I sure hope so, love these bundles with download codes. Will be happy to grab a $10 code by December.

Not really. You can offer price drops even if you're killing it, just to keep the momentum and ensure your product remains a cultural mind share phenomenon. They did the same thing with the PS2, knocking $100 off the price only a year and a half in to it's life, despite strong sales. And they were wise to do so as sales absolutely catapulted after that.

What momentum? XB1 is $50 cheaper than the PS4 and it's still is being outsold by the PS4 in almost every month this year.

Isn't the PS4 outselling the XB1 almost 2:1 worldwide.

What exactly is Sony sweating about?

Yes, but I didn't mention anything about the worldwide situation did I. I'm talking specifically about North America, where Microsoft are laying on the heat based on that tightening sales gap They have the more commercially viable lineup of games this holiday season too, so that's extra pressure right there. It seems the PS4 isn't going to be quite the runaway victor in NA like it is in the rest of the world (barring the UK maybe).

I think TR2 will do well thanks to massive bundling this Holiday (just like ACU last year). Yes, Fallout 4 bundle makes way more sense, and until recently I thought Fallout 4 well get the default bundle instead of TR2, but... the way SE and CD keep defending this deal makes me think they're sure TR2 will do well, which will only happen if it's heavily bundled.

Also I have this crazy prediction that MS default SKU this holiday will be TR2+Fallout 4 bundle.

That would be a very attractive bundle. Makes more sense than including Tomb Raider Definitive Edition which everyone has played already by now. What do you think they would price it at? 349?

How is it a tightening sales gap when Ps4 wins almost every month?

Yeah lets forget that Sony has exclusive advertising (and no doubt will have bundles with) the two biggest games of the year.

I'm still not sold on Halo 5's runaway success. Halo 4 and especially the MCC have damaged the brand, this October we'll see just by how much.

Read the rest of my post. They can always sell even more, and if a lower price point achieves that, without taking too much of a hit to profits, it makes sense to do it. Getting complacent and resting on their laurels price wise, is probably not the ideal strategy, even if they are still healthily in the lead.

Because Sony was obliterating them at the start of the gen and that doesn't seem to be the case now? Even though the PS4 is still winning most months, it's not by such a substantial amount anymore, and the Xbone sold a lot more units last holiday season which it looks like it could repeat again this year.

Third-party marketing partnerships will most definitely help no doubt, far more so than any exclusive Sony has releasing for the rest of the year, but I still don't think it's going to quite match Microsoft's lineup. And they're going to super aggressive with the bundles and temporary price cuts as well. They want to win NA back so fucking bad that it's almost like they've overlooked their other markets.

Halo comes out in October, but I'm sure it will a lot of noise in November as well, with a cheap crazy-ass bundle or something. This is desperate MS we're talking about.

Are they still desperate?

One interpretation of the "we don't base our success on Sony sales" comment recently is that they've given up on catching up so won't be doing the huge sales like last year.

Guess we'll see.

I doubt that's enough to make Sony sweat though. They're still ahead and they've been able to keep a gap (although Kudos to MS for closing it a bit over nearly 24 months) while maintaining a higher base price point.

Sony would only be sweating if they expected better but they have clearly ennjoyed greater success than they anticipated and are making the most of it.

Even is MS cut the gap further this holidays, say from 850K or so right down to 200K Sony will still be ahead after two full years in US from being dominated the gen before, and they will finally be entering the start of the expected long run of their bigger hitters (while MS will still be behind after their main big hitter has already come out - Halo 5) and they still have a price point advantage to use.

There's little sign in their PR or press Sony are particularly concerned about it being close in US. They're going to win worldwide, it's already essentially in the bag and they've turned their fortunes around in the PS division enormously.

If Sony are sweating I suspect it's still with relief at how well the PS4 has done.

Complacent? Their competitor has dropped their price $150 in just over a year, and still can't match sales, and this is after a generation of the 360 leading in the U.S.

They'll ride out $399 as long as they can, and when the price finally drops, it'll be huge.

This will never happen, but could you imagine a PS4 price drop to $349.99 with a bundle that includes both Star Wars: Battlefront and Call of Duty: Black Ops III? That would probably win Christmas.

Really, Sony could just have a $349 Battlefront bundle and have ads running when Ep.7 comes out in theaters. Bank will be made.

Yeah getting pretty confused here.

Especially if there like a special edition star wars console too.

With Star Wars hype around then it would do gang busters.

Don't see how it's complacent. Sony is more concerned with hitting their profit margins and they'll continue to do that as long as they can. They are still selling well at the $399 price

I think Cosmic explain it better.
Price drop is still highly unlikely imo. Additional stuff thrown in the box, sure. Velocities are good, inventory is good, no need to drop.

Would be #6

The dedicated handheld gaming market continues to show moderate to steep declines.

If only it included a charger...
It wouldn't have made a difference

If they do a price drop this year, I think it's fair to say they're sweating it a bit.

I'd argue that if the PS4 keeps selling as well as it is, then any price drop would be more about getting prepared for Morpheus than about any pressure they're feeling from Microsoft.

Because. Last year they were winning every month by an average of like 95k. I believe it's less this year I think the biggest gap was like 70k or so( not positive on that)

Last year there was a $50-100 price gap in their favor.

This year the PS4 cost $50 more and it is STILL winning almost every month.

Is this purely a guess or is there anything that makes you think that this will happen?

Why do you think TR:DE won't be included? Remember FO4 comes with free FO3 via BC, at that point they might aswell just include TR DE, it's not like it's going to cost MS much more. Or maybe TR BC but I think that's pretty pointless when there's a definitive edition out.

FO3 BC + FO4 + TR:DE + Rise of the TR bundle is what we will see IMO, if FO4 and RoTR is being bundled at all.

Microsoft didn't care to marketing The Witcher 3 properly in USA, what makes people think they are going with a FO 4 bundle this holidays?

I still find it weird (bordering in insane) to pay a ton to tie the game up as an exclusive and then just give it away for free. Wouldn't it have just been a hell of a lot cheaper to just bundle it?

Because Fallout 4 would be more beneficial in bringing in the 360 crowd than Witcher 3. Fallout 4 is in a completely different league than Witcher when it'll come to selling consoles.

Why would Square Enix have it bundled with the Xbox One when it could be bundled in PS4's?

Last year there was a $50-100 price gap in their favor.

This year the PS4 cost $50 more and it is STILL winning almost every month.

During July last year, the two consoles were the same price, and when the Xbox One WAS more expensive in April and May, it sold very poorly. The price-cut has definitely allowed the XB1 to keep in line with the PS4 this year in terms of sales, and it might allow them to sell more next month as well when they finally release some bundles of new releases (so far, the XB1's only new bundles have been through the MCC)

I'd argue that if the PS4 keeps selling as well as it is, then any price drop would be more about getting prepared for Morpheus than about any pressure they're feeling from Microsoft.

Possibly, though I don't think Morpheus is going to set the world on fire. At least, not at the start. It will probably be more of a slow burn.

I don't disagree, but even with that, I think they want to go into its launch with as low of a "complete price" as possible, which would mean both pricing the headset as cheaply as they can, and getting the price of the system further down as well.

It needs to sell 800k units above the PS4.

Let's say August is pretty positive, and they eat away 50k.

September is likely to go the PS4 way again with the Destiny bundle and MGSV. Either way, it seems like the real game
THE SEASON
begins in October.

They then have October, November and December to sell 800k above. October should have a significant boost: It's Halo 5, it has its own bundle, the timing is great. If it can replicate and even go beyond last year's PS4 September, let's assume they eat away 300k.

Then we get to November. Best case scenario, the CoD/Battlefront stuff doesn't move the needle much, and Microsoft goes in agressively for Black Friday again. Another 400k?

Then it's down to December, where nothing really seems to suggest they could eat another 100k lead.

I have a very, very tough time imagining a scenario where this happens, even keeping Sony's strategy completely fixed.

There are just way too many moving parts at this point to predict even remotely accurately IMO. We'll know more once we can trace out their holiday strategies reasonably well.

We don't know if those will be bundled, and while it's likely, we don't know if the CoD stuff will truly make people jump ship.

I agree with this the most. It is way too early to be predicting the Holiday season. We will have a much better Idea after PGS conference, and once MS announces their deals (probably around the same timeframe)
As far as the next three months go, I think that we can make a few reasonable conclusions......

August should see X1 as the best selling HW...It probably won't be a huge amount, but I could see anywhere from 20-50k depending on how well the bundles do...

September should shift back to PS4 with Destiny bundle and MGSV. I don't think it will be as big a month as last year, but could see PS4 tacking anywhere from 70-120k onto it's lead.

October should naturally shift back to X1 as it has Halo 5 coming out in a big way, and a limited Halo 5 console that could shift an extra 100-150k units in itself much like the CoD limited bundle did. I think that Xbox will see a big victory here with anywhere from 150-250k lead for the month.

Then like you said, I just think that Nov/Dec are too hard to predict...and I think that how well Halo 5 does critically and among the consumers/fans could have a big bearing for how many more people go out and get an X1 this Holiday for Halo 5...(plus we don't know either's price drop and/or bundling strategy for the Holiday yet).

Sony have gone from being outsold 2:1 in NA to a fairly small lead, without having to price cut.

Bar the UK the PS4 is outselling the One significantly in pretty much every other country.

My guess is that SCEA's target for this gen was to get to parity market share with MS, knowing that RoW was going to fall their way anyway.

So no, I don't think Sony are 'sweating' about NA.

Xbox will win the holidays, MS will give every game away for free if they have to.

Sony will just coast along with their 3rd party bundles and put up great numbers also. Maybe drop the price on black friday. Nothing to sweat about.
