I figured out how to flutter jump while wearing the Yoshi costume in SMB1 style. Time for me to make Yoshi's Retro Island!

I've got 2 stages. One is really basic, and the other is Extremely difficult and took me an hour to beat

Broken Basement - 2FC2 0000 001A 38D3
I Want To Be The Mario! - E819-0000-0028-5DDF

Broken Basement was fun. Died a couple times because I rushed.

I got to the second screen of the other one. Like the level in SMB3 I wasn't ever able to fly with a shell and hold onto it.

Can you guys help me out with something small that doesn't really matter at all?

I'm making a level that involves saving a Yoshi that you see at the very beginning that looks like it can't be saved. It's a long level and I'm hoping that it's long enough that you forget about the Yoshi at the beginning, so when come across it later on it's a nice little surprise.

My problem is that I don't know what to name the level. I feel like if I make it clear in the name that you get to save the Yoshi more people would be willing to play through the whole thing, but I still want it to be a surprise.

This is the Yoshi in question. The idea behind the level is that this Yoshi has been taken and is about to be eaten.

Please give my first attempt a try. The 'goal' is to find the five 1up mushrooms. I wanted to give the stage an open ended feeling, with backtracking encouraged. I tried to give secret areas a tell and guide the player with the design.

I tried to keep the difficulty tough, but fair (it still might be too tough); No being swarmed to a hundred giant enemies at once. Play tested it with a few friends to fix some small design issues.

Anyways, please let me know what you think!

Please have fun with it and let all your non-gaming friends enjoy :)
I appreciate your intent, but in my opinion, a course for absolute beginners to Mario should never require the player to run. Might sound silly to a lot of people, and yeah, running is a pretty big part of playing Mario, but I've had people just not "get" having to hold a button to run faster. I would leave the coins you have above the long jump, and shorten the gap below, in a way that if a newbie jumps off the top with the intent to get the coins, and isn't running, they land safely on the bottom if pushing right.

Made two new levels using NSMB style, theme of afterlife:

Here are a few more levels I created today:

Aqua Destillata

ID: 62IA-0000-0026-62EA

An underwater Super Mario Bros. themed level, two routes you can take. Fairly low challenge, not very long.

PipeException #1

ID: 78F4-000-0027-4581

An overworld Super Mario Bros. themed level. Good timing and some precise jumps are key here. It begins with a gauntlet of pipes. Moderate challenge.

360° Blocks

ID:CAC2-000-0028-5376

Trial and error. And blocks. I guess you could call it a glitch level.

played 100 marios and even some highly regarded uploaded ones and was not impressed.

A metric ton of junk and people focus on enemies too much even even the few better ones i tried.

Hopefully the ranking system or whatever starts sorting some of these complete wash's out of the system as i like the idea of 100 marios but the amount of levels i skipped...yeesh

OK, after spending the last 16 hours (!!!) playing this more-or-less continuously along with my wife, I have a few courses to share. First, the serious ones:

Under where? Under water!
0A26-0000-001F-FD14
As the name suggests, this is a water stage. I tried to focus on pacing and precision swimming. The clear rate is sitting near 60%, so it's not too challenging, although there are some optional coin areas that are a little tricky.

Bridge Out
E7EE-0000-0024-8DDF
A bridge-themed platforming stage. Clear rate is low, even though I don't think there's anything overly fiendish. There's a secret path that lets you skip the majority of the level.

My first novelty stage:

The Biggest Loser
5733-0000-0028-B4AA
Tired of being the stereotypical jolly fat guy, Mario is finally ready to start making some changes in his life. With the right amount of determination, you could help him meet his goals. Run, Mario, run!

And one created by the wife:

Deedle Land 1
9D20-0000-0025-6E65
I asked if she had anything to say to GAF about the level: "Be nice to me."

I know these early courses aren't terribly impressive, but I've been trying to put some principles of level design into practice for the first time in my life (never been much for level editors before), so I'm looking forward to hearing GAF's feedback!

I like to make levels that resemble what an actual Mario level would be like. Nothing crazy.

My biggest gripe with this game so far is that many people seem to either not understand or not care about level design.

The vast majority of the levels I played tonight were all about maximum punishment and after awhile it's just not that fun.

I'm really hoping these kinds of levels get weeded out over time. Otherwise it's a phenomenal game!

I've noticed a large amount of levels where it's just a bunch of random shit. Really dumb

Just got the game and here's my first level. I think there's a unique motif to it so I really hope you enjoy. I could have spent more time actually putting more platforming in but I really wanted to finish and share my idea. Please check it out and let me know what you think!

By the way, how do you get a thumbnail of your level?

Good critiques. Thank you ! I was hoping that I'm starting off by introducing good item box. Goombas, and then those pipes for jumping. I hoped at that time they figured out the run button so that's why I started introducing the long jump. I could see that maybe it's still too much for beginners. I will make adjustment for that :)

3/3 and 100% clear rate is good though :D

Agreed completely, I hope people actually do their best to design a proper and fair level. Difficulty is fine too, but it has to be well designed.

I recreated an e-card level from Super Mario Advance 4 that was Japanese only and wasn't even a card.

Playing with Thwomps

(57E2-0000-0028-E1D3)

Level is kind of easy, but it has thwomps in it so it's automatically fun. Every level should have thwomps.

Here are a couple of levels I created:

Shroom Race: a underground race against a Mushroom (9505-0000-0028-E6FE)

Tetris: made all platforms out of tetrominos (55F9-0000-0028-B981)

Hey guys, I thought I'd share my most recent level that I've been working on for a while:

WVW69iYV9H4aRNyzx9

Emerald Hill Zone Act 1
7FA5-0000-0028-C987

Ever since I saw the sprite for the Sonic costume, I thought it would be awesome to try and recreate one of the original Sonic levels. At first I was going to do the Green Hill zone from Sonic 1, but I saw someone already made that so I went with the next best thing: Emerald Hill zone from Sonic 2.

I tried my best to remain as faithful to the original level as possible, although some of the sizing is off in certain parts. The loops can also be a bit finicky. It helps to stay directly in the middle of the shell so you don't fall off.

First one was fun. Died a couple times because I'm not patient.
The feather made the second level too easy IMO. There's enough running room with the collapsing platform to get up to flying speed.
The third one got a big chuckle out of me and my kids. Nice work.
I loved the last one. The ton of enemies works when there are some stars around.

Exactly! I'm all about a challenging Mario Bros level, but at least make it fair. I don't know how many of the levels I played tonight were made so that if you missed the one powerup, switch, shell, etc in that area, then the whole damn run was ruined.

Not to mention the levels that were just spam-fests or just repeated god awful platforming jumps.

To be fair, I run into this issue with coding all the time.

I'm writing the program so of course I know how it's supposed to run. My boss constantly has to remind me of this.

Thanks for playing! I'll have to adjust the gaps in the bridge level so you can't take flight.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
OK--my wife's first level. Her first ever Mario experience, actually. She didn't do too bad of a job, to be honest. Took me a bit to beat it.

My Wife's First Level--Mine Maze

Plus, a re-post of my level:

Just posted my first level (well, the one that wasn't built by my 5-year old). Called "Peril Reef." Underwater level. Short, but difficult with three different choices of paths that all have their own challenges.
