Global Game Awards winners for 2015 announced

.....but how is that "innovative"? It isn't something that has never been done before.

I mean yea, it does it well... But that just means it is worthy of " best story" or "best graphics" of the year. You wouldn't say a game is innovative for telling a good story, or having good combat?

Demons Souls (or dragons dogma), arguably the best combat found in an arpg (especially at the time) wouldn't get "most innovative" for it's well done combat. It would get "best gameplay" category "RPG".

I guess its all gonna come down to opinions being opinions...
Yes, ultimately any award comes down to opinion.

Nice to see Life is Strange and Until Dawn get some awards. The Witcher 3 is probably my GOTY as well, but I'd have hoped to see Bloodborne a bit higher on those lists.

I guess the laser guns and plasma rifles make it a sci Fi game ??????????!!!!!!!

I mean the game IS based off of what we thought the future would be like to someone who lived in the 50s right? Fusion powered cars, houses, weapons. Robots that can talk to you. Detoxing machines. Aliens.

Yea, I don't get it either.

Good to see Life is Strange get some props. Undertale is still under-represented, but it's to be expected since it sold less than 400k, and was sandwiched between MGS5, Mario Maker, Halo 5 and Fallout 4.

Combined quality of content typically only found in linear games with huge, detailed and beautiful open world while providing tons of choices followed by proper consequences.
I'm not sure innovation entails 'doing stuff that has been done before, but in a bigger, expensive fashion'. Wild Hunt feels like more of an evolution than a revolution, and its inclusion feels out of place in that category.

Science Fiction =/= Futuristic Space setting

Great to see Life is Strange getting some early love before it gets inevitably snubbed by almost all gaming sites.

Also Tales from the Borderlands winning Best Comedy is extremely deserved. It's legitimately funny, miles ahead of the cringeworthy humour of Borderlands 2.

Urgh Witcher 3, have to accept that, I guess :(
Not a bad game, for sure, but nothing outstanding either.

I don't get why people a praising the open world in W3 so much.
Ok, the map(s) is huge, there's plenty of foliage, graphics are nice (though I don't like the visual style), there are animals, monsters, bandits, ruins, misc. assets that's it.

In FO4 the world seems to 'live' even without player-interaction, you really get the impression that you are in the middle of 1000 small conflicts, whereas in W3 the world is too idyllic for a region with two huge oposing forces. There's no crazy randomness in W3.

This is a case of graphics do matter, me thinks. Cos the gameplay was boring and repetitive: Mediocre combat, shitty inventory and crafting, even shittier leveling-system, useless loot for the most part. And no - listening to dialogues and choosing options does not count as gameplay for me.

Part of me thinks that W3 gets all the praise for coming across like "mature" and "intelligent" game, but in reality it's not even that.

This post contains a lot of salt. Users beware

Are you still talking about Fallout here?

No, it contains an opinion.

I don't care for how may awards the game gets.
I had waaay more fun with Splatoon, MGSV, BB and FO4 this year- just my opinion and I took
my time to explain what I did not like about W3.

You're smoking something, as is indicated by your post at several points.

Please elaborate...
What is so special about the open world in W3?
What is good about the combat you'll have to deal with the whole game?
What is good about the crafting, levelling and loot?

And I forgot to mention that the game provides almost 0 challenge on the highest difficulty (except those 5-6 annoying wraiths in Baron's quest)- and this comes from an average gamer. I'm playing FO4 on hard, I'm 80 hours in and still get my ass kicked, just when I think I reached that typical state of OP. In Witcher 3 you can encounter any Monster, if it is too strong, just run away - the aggro-area for most enemies is laughably small (except wolves, lol). Try that in FO4, most of the enemies will hunt you down.

No Forza 6 in best racing.
No Tomb Raider anywhere.
No Halo 5 in best shooter.

Sometimes I understand the comments about biased media... it's not hard to imagine these theories with awards like this.

Bring on the salt.

Witcher 3 raking in the awards. Interacting with a narrative (role-playing a narrative) is as much gameplay as pressing O to dodge at the right time.

Shedding a tear for Obsidian in the best developer list :) Hard to beat CDPR but I love Obsidian.

Don't get the love for Witcher 3. Main story is pretty nonexistent, gameplay is dull. It was big though, and it had a few nice moments. And virtual boobies. How it would even be on the innovative list, let alone win it, is besides me.
Rest of the lists are pretty good though. Great to see LiS get love.

It's weird to see some of the "the media biased against MS" claims about a PC oriented site with awards that were community voted.

With all the salt on my lips, it's nice to see that someone agrees ;P

Few people in this thread explained why Witcher 3 is so well loved

If you don't get it, that's on you

Yes, the high watermark of good gameplay, Fallout 4.

Are you serious?

You crazy. Fallout 4 will win all the GOTY this year and I cannot wait for the stream of tears that will follow!

I am going to drink them and use the excess salt for my baked soft pretzels.

Oh yes, you are right. One guy mentioned NPCs having schedules and commenting your actions. Wait, Skyrim 5 did that 5 years ago and maybe Oblivion, too. Ah, I forgot, those games are shit and don't count.

Another one talks about the seamless open world and how this world is alive.
So trees dancing in the wind and some mammals running accross the map is considered something special/outstanding in 2015?

The voiceacting, facial expressions and overall presentation of dialogues are the only outstanding thing W3 besides graphics.

Shit like this makes me doubt the whole ''GAF is the best community'' rhetoric that's talked around a lot.

Everything about the Witcher's open world is special

Oh c'mon, you can do better than this.

NeoGaf 2015:
Q: 'Please explain what is special about Witcher 3's open world'
A: 'Everything'

=

Q: 'What is the distance to the moon in miles?'
A: 'A number'
It has been written about countless times here and elsewhere, why the game is so loved, which is why I doubt anyone is interested in repeating it all again only to unsuccessfully nonconvince the few people who dislike it. Maybe I am wrong and someone will see it worthwhile though
