"Stop asking me to show you my tits"

Kids play video games. They are not fully formed humans. 30-year-old kids sometimes. I don't see the appeal in using a microphone with toxic players in call of duty... or any other game, for that matter.

And people wonder why the lack of voice chat doesn't bother many of us. Yes I know muting is an option, but if all the decent players are muting games because of this crap then all you're left with is the shitheads.

I know I have muting on. BLOPS3 has a global all mute. Surprisingly it took a while for developers to put that into games.

Nothing useful has ever been said in voice chat ever.

They will mostly be kids. That doesn't excuse it but yeah, kids are shitty and the more anonymous it is - the shittier they can be.

Um no, these don't sound like kids. Like 20-30 year old men.

Its possible a lot of the messages are kids though.

Its pretty much required for zombies. Unless you want to only make it to wave 5 or something.

Sad to hear. But I wouldn't say this is exclusive to women. People online just down right petty, being a female is just something the can use to attack. I've been online gaming for a long time and been attacked over just about anything.
And now the first thing I do is just mute everyone and only use party chat with friends.

As long the anonymity exists, this will always happen. Don't let this ruin you wifes enjoyment.

It's kind of ridiculous that some people keep bringing up that those people can be reported or that the player has block/mute features or whatnot. Like yeah, they're there, but why should a player like her have to constantly deal with this targeted garbage and waste her time blocking and muting and reporting other people?

Enjoy anonymity on the internet while it lasts, because 20-30 years from now I think we'll be looking back on the present time as the golden era / wild west times of the internet.

Sorry to hear it. My ex is hounded by this constantly. It sickens me that there are so many people with such everlasting hatred of common social decency.

You need to play with mature people which is pretty hard to find online especially in dudebro FPS games. I'm a guy and I won't communicate with randos in online games with my voice at all. Party chat is the best way.

Your wife will need to become very familiar with the mute all option in games it seems. I don't cop much shit as a guy and I still mute all most times.

It's really fucking sad that shitholes like that exist. I'm fine with some minor trash talk, but straight up racist / sexist harassment is just fucking rampant in online gaming. It's one of the reasons I don't tell people I play games, simply because I don't want to be lumped in with those assholes.

BLOPS3 is matchmaking multiplayer, right? If you don't want to put up with shit like this, then the optimal solution is pretty much to play on community servers with active moderation and enforced server rules. This completely transforms the social climate when you have people who behave because they want to maintain a respectable reputation and be allowed back in. It makes the social experience in these types of games so much more pleasant that I simply refuse to play these types of games if they don't support servers. That goes not just for sexism but any kind of obnoxious behavior.

I...don't even think that's an option for CODBLOPS. I don't think that's an option for 95% of console games.

it is not exclusive to women, but it is heavily disproportionate towards women

Sounds like Sony really was able to convert that 360 COD fanbase.
It's funny that you say that... for all the shit that people gave the XBL base during the 360 years, my time on Destiny on XB1 was fantastic. Everyone was super civil and friendly, and the few times I ran into a woman on the mic, nobody made a big deal of it (one even headed a raid party of mine; nobody batted an eye). Meanwhile, my roommate's experience on various PS4 games has been atrocious. Anecdotal, I know, but I'd wager that most of the intolerable mainstream population jumped ship and is on PSN now.

12 year olds trying to be cool and edgy, I kind of understand, but there's something really depressing about 20-30+ year olds spouting that same shit.

Reprehensible behavior from these men. I'm sorry your wife has to go through such harassment in order to play games the way she wants.

Something needs to be done to make the online space safe for everyone, but I don't know what. It feels like all the reporting in the world isn't going to be enough. =/

Screencap the really rude messages with their PSN IDs on them and post it here then we can all file a complaint about them and get their asses banned. If they get multiple complaints about that shit and get banned and lose all their trophies, friends and PSN purchases.. maybe they will stop being such dicks the next time they set up their account.

This is why Blizzard and Nintendo are taking the correct approach - just limit olnine communication. People are too irresponsible to be trusted with vocal anonymity online.

This. The main reason why Awesomenauts is my favorite MOBA =P

Yeah. Is why I prefer paying mute or just with friends, and I'm a guy.

But the racist remarks and being called fa***** multiple times (the irony is that I'm actually gay :p), just put me off. Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War...

People around here complain that Party Chat ruined online console gaming, when for some of us is just the only way.

There should be a button combo you can press that sends the last 15 seconds of chat audio to a moderator with the people in the party. That clip then gets sent back to the user with a reason for the ban if nessisary. I want to see an end to abuse and the companies need to take far more drastic ation, just because its online doesnt mean that we can't do something about it.

Some of this I believe has to do with party chat/lobbies. I can't remember how many years it has been since I've been in a lobby talking with random people. If I am playing with friends we are either in some program (discord/skype/w.e) or in party chat. If I am playing by myself I don't have voice on at all.

It would be nice if they'd get a real report system in place, but I am sure they are worried about people abusing (and they would) the system. These companies are big enough you'd think they'd come up with safeguards, but what do I know.

Ah, Call of Duty. A hive of scum and villiany if ever there was one. A week into playing the first Modern Warfare on 360 I learned to quickly mute my microphone, and mute pieces of shit after getting the whole "lolgirl" and "go back to the kitchen" spiel that young teens and immature adults alike repeat Ad nauseam. Pricks flock to CoD like flies swarm to shit.

Sorry to hear that no one should have to put up with that sort of abuse. Have you tried looking at the BLOPS3 thread you might be able to find some people to play with pm here who aren't complete arseholes.

Nah, you're right. Most of the messages I heard on my girl's account sounded like old, grown ass men thirsty for anything and everything just creeping on the account since it was probably a girl.

It's pretty pathetic.

It's also sad when you see some shit when you're looking through streams that say stuff like "flash at 1000 viewers"... Are people that desperate to get views?

MS and Sony badly need to get this sorted. People that take things way to serious abusing others. It's why I have never used a headset, can't be dealing with abuse. The abuse I get in messaged me is enough. Sorry your wife has to put up with that shit as I bet she gets it even worse. You should report the messages even though 9/10 nothing happens.

As said above Anomonity lets people act or be dick heads. While I wouldn't want to lose it, far more needs to be done.

Muting should definitely not be the fix all, because it doesn't solve anything in the long term, but still valid while we press for things to get fixed.A few of my friends have deal with this shit on a constant basis, but don't want to quit playing their favorite games or chatting with people who aren't huge dicks.

So I hope when people say "just mute", they aren't stopping at that point as a solution.

It's also sad when you see some shit when you're looking through streams that say stuff like "flash at 1000 viewers"... Are people that desperate to get views?

That has nothing to do with this topic at all.

Voice chat in games, not even once. People are awful, simple as that.

I remember someone on GAF saying he changed his name to something female sounding in Street Fighter IV, and only playing as female characters, and getting an exponential increase of hate mail. It's disgusting. Whenever I get salty hate mail in Street Fighter it's usually racist stuff since I'm from Mexico :v

Well now I'm pissed off. Companies should take better action against this. Right now it feels like a catch 22— they won't take action unless there's a bigger female audience for their games, but a bigger audience won't be attracted untill they take action.

Unacceptable behaviour. I guess this is beside the point, but the best solution imo is just not to use voice chat unless you know that the community is decent enough not to stoop so low.

Edit: Or just not to play games with shitty communities (which, in a perfect world, might push developers / publishers to take a more active role in combating anti-social behaviour).

I can relate to this greatly. Kind of why I've stopped using voice chat outside of party groups.

I wish text chat was a bit bigger on consoles like on PC, but I get the ecosystem is a lot different there.

Awful sorry to hear about this. Such a shame that gaming communities are still so infested with slime like those described here.

Good on her for not taking any shit. Shames me to admit but if I was a woman I'd definitely avoid voice chat and have a gender neutral gamertag just to not have deal with all the dirtbags out there.

I almost never use voice chat in games anymore and this is just another of the myriad of reasons why.

I find myself using public voice chats less and less as I get older. Only because I find them becoming more and more toxic. I'd rather play a game with no communication at all than a game where someone is berating someone else that just started playing the game and isn't letting off. It's a shame when you're playing a game that requires cooperation and teamwork, but have to deal with such negativity. In the end it can really damper the experience.

how did they knew she was a girl? did she have a cam on or something?

Too bad they couldnt behave like normal people.

Her voice and PSN Name. It isn't something like GamerGyrl or anything like that (not that there is anything wrong with it) but it is a play on a famous female game character.

Both together makes her gender obvious.

Sorry bro. Kudos to your wife for still gaming and being awesome at it. I hope the gaming industry does something about this since this has been going on for so long. People say shit because there are no consequences.

Perhaps public shaming is the only way to solve this.

My friend and I used to play Call of Duty a lot back in the day, and she'd get a lot of those comments and messages during games. It's pathetic, really, but other than muting, blocking and reporting there's not much that we can do about it. Party chat on PS4 helped a lot with this, as we don't have to deal with other players in voice chat.
