I have a 3 year old boy and for the most part I enjoy a lot of the things he is into. (Reliving my youth I guess)

But he really likes the Power Rangers on Netflix. And it is just a horrid show. Everything about it looks cheap. I almost think the show is a troll of itself. Like they know it's horrible so they just make it more horrible.

Clearly it's been really successful, there's a ton of Power Ranger series. But who enjoys this shit?

I respectfully disagree.

I hate it that it replaced actual annual Super Dental shows at my local station when I was a kid. What a downgrade

We used to get a dubbed Super Sentai a year after a serie aired in Japan, then some genius decided to replace it with that Frankenstein

Super Sentai genre is cool, Power Rangers is based on like the 16th or something Super Sentai series.
It's not for everyone though. Most have childhood attraction to it, others find the best of their shows entertaining (Gokaiger!)

I can't really watch Power Rangers after seeing Kamen Rider subtitled. Just leagues apart. Tried Super Sentai to see if the plots were better for those shows before they get reinterpreted in English with new actors plots and scenes. Sentai in general is super cheesey. Loved it as a child, but so far only Go Busters works for me as an adult. I couldn't stand Kyoryuger. Too cheesey. I'll flip around and see if maybe Gokaiger is alright, but even Go Busters gets pretty corny compared to the awesome that is Kamen Rider shows like Gaim, Kabuto, OOO's, W, Blade and Kuuga.

Yeah Kuuga is the shit. The last Kamen Rider with blood in it, now it's all spark effects.

So the show is filmed in Japan, then they add the American actors to it for the States?
More or less.

They basically take a Japanese show from a franchise called Super Sentai, replace all the footage of Japanese actors with new footage of American actors, and come up with a new story and stuff. (Generally, a few series have been so close to the original version you could basically call them just remakes)

Obviously, I don't know what ones your kid has been watching, but like the currently airing series, Power Rangers Dino Charge, which began in 2015, uses footage from a show called Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger, which aired in Japan in 2013.

I was a huge fan of the show growing up. When every kid I know dropped it after MMPR, I kept watching. I had to stop after Time Force cause I moved away and they didn't air the show where I was. I would watch some of the reruns of the seasons I missed on again and off again but never really watched the show consistently after moving.

I like super heroes, martial arts and giant robots, so Power Rangers was an alright half hour a day to spend after school.

Ok. Ya watching Dino Charge right now.

I'm really curious how the finances work. Is an American studio paying a flat fee for the clips? Also it seems as if the newer Power Rangers get access to the costumes that the Japanese studios are using.

I guess as much as I hate it, it's very intriguing.

Why do you hate somehting that is not for you?

Power Rangers did great to a lot of generations.
Yes, it's cheap, ugly, and repetitive, and whatever, but works for kids as intended, so, good for Power Rangers.

The series has been a huge part of my youth. Seriously, giant robots that can assemble with each other in order to form an even bigger robot and fight a giant monster while ravaging a cardboard city, what's not to like?

Lovede it as a kid.

Nowadays I watch the oldest episodes and laugh at how awful it really was.

Just dont take it seriously, OP.

When you're 8 you don't realize that every thing looks cheap. You just enjoy the people in cool costumes beating up the cool monsters.

The same world with a large budget would make a really cool show/movie. Hopefully the PR movie coming out is getting a good budget.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

They basically buy the rights to the corresponding season. In this case, they bought the rights to Zyuden Sentai Kyoryouger to produce Power Rangers Dino Charge. Then they add their own footage.
Interestingly enough, Dino Charge has more of a budget than usual thanks to a grant they got from New Zealand (they film the show there). As long as they portray the country in a positive light, they got money.

The only season of Rangers I dislike is Overdrive. SPD had a bomb ass theme.

Clearly you haven't seen (Super) Megaforce.

I guess that's it. But the effects are just sooo bad. Like there are easily motion fx hobbiest doing better shit on their YouTube channels. And Power Rangers is probably making shit tons of money, just put a little effort into it.

To the 'robots being cool' argument. There were shows like; Gundam, Exo Squad etc. that have done it way better.

I admit I'm not 100%, but I believe it's like Saban (who makes PR) basically gets the entire series from Toei (who makes Sentai) and Saban has, per the contract with Toei, the right to basically use the footage however they want. Like, I dunno if they still do it, but like in earlier seasons you'd have stuff like fight footage in an episode of PR being taken from like episode 16 of the Japanese series but the robot footage might be from episode 20 or something.

Yeah and they do usually get access to the ranger costumes, as well as the villain costumes, mainly done to get American original footage, especially of the American characters in the ranger outfits and stuff.

Yeah but these robots combine and they will show up every episode with a theme music power up

You cant beat that

You had to be there. As a kid it was amazing I even rewatched the first movie, it still holds up.

It went all shit when they started going turbo and into space and shit.

I was about 16 when it came out and I thought it was one of the dumbest things I'd ever seen.

But it wasn't really meant for my age group.

While I am more a Kamen Rider/Sentai person, I have a soft spot for PR, I grew up with it.

If the cheese bothered me any, I wouldn't be playing JRPGs.

A friend put Power Rangers: Dino Charge on last night as a joke and we ended up watching three episodes. Awful but hilarious. I couldn't believe how 90's it felt. Either the people behind it knew what they were doing or it was actually made in 1997. I might keep watching just for the monster costumes. Too cool.

Power Rangers was great back when I was 9. Tommy as the Green Ranger... oh man. So many wonderful memories of that show. I couldn't get into the newer ones afterwards and with time I grew out of it and moved on to bigger and better things aimed at my age group.
