XCOM 2 PC performance thread

Haribi

Why isn't there a Star Wars RPG? And wouldn't James Bond make for a pretty good FPS?
I had that happen when I set AA to FXAA. It went away when I bumped it up to MSAA2 (the highest I can go on that particular setting before my framerate takes a huge hit).

Thanks, it worked. But now my fps dropped to 25.

I don't understand how I can get up to 50 fps in Witcher 3 on high settings and only 25 here on medium settings.

Are gauss weapons straight upgrade from magnetic weapons? Haven't even build any magnetic weapons yet, and wondering if I should just skip them completely and go straight for gauss weapons which I'm already researching.

Wrong thread, but "gauss weapons" are just the sniper rifle/cannon for the magnetic tier, as far as I remember.

Figured I'd ask this here.

Is there anyway to fix these audio issues:

-no soldier VO
-no tutorial VO

I sorta fixed the soldier VO by switching audio sources, but the tutorial VO remains silent.

Speaking of the tutorial, it's extremely sluggish. Sometimes it takes almost 2 minutes before I can issue an order.

My system is more than capable. I even got game up to 60fps.

edit: fixed I had to manual reinstall DirectX in the game folder

Are there any comments by Firaxis on the performance issues and any pending patchrs? What about special nvidia drivers, any news?
Overall would you advise to wait before buying?

An update is in the works but no word on what the changes/improvements are.

The game seems to work fine - relatively - for me, right up until it freezes (usually in one of the menus - such as character creation - or when trying to save a game).

After that the game completely black screens on startup - after all of the developer logos and before the main menu loads. The only way to fix it is to go through the whole Verify Integrity of Game Cache on Steam. Incredibly annoying. Might as well wait for a patch before even attempting to play it at this point.

Well I finally got my copy to work again after rolling back my Nvidia drivers to 361.43. The newest drivers were giving me a lot of problems and crashing.

Well see how long it lasts as I was running on 361.75 for two days then the wheels came off the bus and I couldn't get into a mission without a crash on mission start or in the sky ranger.

I would advise waiting until they get a patch out. You might get lucky and only have performance issues but if you get stuck in the crashing scenario I had it took me hours of diagnostic trial and error before I could get the game to not crash on mission start.

Damn, seems like this game is a train wreck atm with regards to performance. I'm gonna wait 'til they hopefully sort it out before i start playing it.

I had the game pre-ordered and pre-loaded on Steam, but i haven't even booted it up because of all the negative feedback i've been seeing about the performance. Not gonna have my experience ruined.

Try these fixes.

My game is running at 1080p 60fps in-game, 30-40 in menus. I'm on a laptop, so this is about what I expected with my setup.

I've experienced, black screens, crashing at launch, crashing while promoting a solider. All of that is fixed now.

edit:
Verify Integrity does nothing for this game. I've ran it a dozen times, it always returns with errors, claims it fixes them etc...

Just a heads up I'm late here, but setting XCOM to high affinity in tsk manager gives me much more stable 60 frames on the Avenger, Geoscape and on Missions. Now playing with everything max but AA at FXAA, 1080p on a 980ti/i7 4790 combo

Hmm, that's curious.

Maybe I got lucky - no rain or fire on my mission, and night time . . .

XCOM was lowest priority but I assume that's because I alt tabbed out. Either way I am enjoying it more stable. I can see myself having to turn off Bokeh for that extra push though.

Thanks dude. It was a corrupt profile that was causing it. Fixed now, but waiting for a patch before I play any more - not risking having to start all over again because the game flakes out on me when editing a soldier.

There's something seriously wrong with certain VFX, like fire. Like others have mentioned, no matter the settings it kills performance. The game in general seems way more demanding than it has any right to be.

Really hoping Firaxis has some magic fix-all patch in the works.
What's the command for that?

From the client: Steam > Settings > In Game. Set FPS Counter from off to the corner of your choice.

I'm okay with the poor performance for the time being. The more striking stuff to me is how buggy the game is. The camera, the weird pauses after moves, the weird shooting through objects, the weird pathing, how soldiers will try and break windows that aren't there. If you're going to try and say that you made a game for the platform to justify the lack of controller support, and then delay it, please make sure you release something that is polished.

I did the "verify integrity of game cache" thing but it undid all the .ini file edits I had made. So I'll only use that again if I run into any serious problems.

From the client: Steam > Settings > In Game. Set FPS Counter from off to the corner of your choice.

Unfortunately I guess there's no key to toggle it on or off.

Does no one in here remember that xcom ran like shit when it came out too? Still kinda does, haha.

Bullshit. I didn't have a top tier card and it ran flawlessly at max settings. This game runs like ass even with a 980 and settings turned down.

Is this what focusing on PC gets us? Unstable and glitchy game with fewer options than its predecessor? If this is what a delay got us I can't even imagine what it looked like last year. But hey at least there is mod support. Get us to fix the game for them.

Game was working pretty fine for me, up till now.

Lost all narration and freezes in mission, then exit mission complete lock up.

why does vsync lock the framerate at 30 like half the time im playing?

sometimes it doesnt. sometimes it does.

I dont get it

It locks you to 30 if it thinks you can't get smooth 60, they use double buffering.
Lower your AA or disable it completely, or just disable vsync.

Specs:

i5 3570K @4.4GHz
GTX 670 2GB
16GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
Samsung EVO 840 250GB

Settings: 1080P, no V-Sync or framerate smoothing, No AO or AA or DoF. All the tick box options are off and Shadows are at medium, the rest is max.

Performance is all over the place tbh, mostly 40fps in base although certain parts (like the Armory) can drop all the way to the 20s.

During mission its better but never really gets to a steady 60FPS (mostly at 45-50). I noticed whenever a car explodes or I blow up something like a side of a wall on a building all 4 of my cores will jump to %100 usage for a second, never seen anything do that besides Prime95.

I also get straight up freezing during the loading of a mission when its your squad inside the skyranger.

Overall though I'm still enjoying the hell out of the game, just waiting for them to come through with a patch(or two).

I'd love to buy this right now but I can't afford it sadly, I do have a question.

How well would this setup run the game:

4gb GTX 980
12GB of System Ram 1600
Core i5 2500k OC'd to 4.5GHZ

Big BIG fan of XCOM and Ufo Defense, can't wait to play this some day soon.

I have an i7 2600k at 4.2 GHz, 16GB RAM and my weak link, a 1.5GB 580 (I know) but I'm happy with the performance at 1920x1200 on medium.

A fairly long pause between XCOM and alien turns, though.

I play the game at 1080/60 almost on max (usual suspects FXAA and DoF simple) and I still have that pause

I haven't tested the actual frames but the difference between 2xMSAA & vsync and FSAA and no vsych feels like 25fps to 55fps and the image quality barely suffers at all...

Now my game is crashing at the same point during the cinematic going back to base after a successful mission. Like I have to force a restart. Seriously this is a buggy piece of shit.

I still can't believe they even released the game in this state, is mind boggling, even worse is that no site is making a noise about this.
Beyond Earth was released in a pretty poor state, so this isnt the first time. Dunno of this is Firaxis or 2K causing the issue, but someone isn't doing their job. I guess using this Frankenstein version of UE3 doesn't help though.

They released the game like this after a delay. It's on Firaxis. It's also on all of the press that didn't mention it in the reviews.

I'm sure some press talked about the performance problems. It's bad IMO but it's a turn based game so as long as it doesn't drop below 30 it's not the worst in the world.

I've only had one crash in 40+ hrs play but it was a bad one. My internet connection also failed and when I tried a restart it just would'nt so I had to do a soft boot. And this is on a brand new laptop, literally 4 days old.
Xcom2 is badly coded, no ifs or buts about it. I still like it for all its flaws but really he issues are very annoying.

I'm not going to comment on stuff like coding and how optimized it is because I have no idea about the work that goes into a project of this size. I can only judge the finished project. My complaints aren't with the framerate. It's with ehe crashes, the camera, and large number of bugs ignoring the issues people are having with $500 video cards. That's unacceptable.
