Good old times.

All is perfectly normal.

Gonna do a Nuzlocke run. Who's with me?

Rules:
1. Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released or put in Bill's computer permanently.
2. You may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.
3. No save scumming.

I'm down, I'll update my progress as I play. I use additional rules though, I'll list them here (in bold) and explain below...

Rules:
1. Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released or put in Bill's computer permanently.
2A. You may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.
2B. If the first Pokemon I see I've already caught (even if its dead) I catch the next new Pokemon.
3. No save scumming.
4. No items in battle (besides Pokeballs)
5. I'm playing Yellow so Pikachu must be in my party at all times, if he faints its game over.
6. I must nickname all of my Pokemon, the weirder/stranger/funnier names the better.
7. Safari Game Bonus, I count the whole area as 1 but since its so random I get 3 chances to catch Pokemon, duplicates clause still applies (rule 2B).
8. I can use gift Pokemon but receiving one counts as catching one in a given area.
9. I cannot trade Pokemon

As for the explanation...

2B - So its known as the duplicates clause and I use it for 2 reasons, First is that it limits your overall roster of Pokemon as eventually you will run out of Pokemon that you can catch. Second is that it prevents you from getting like 12 Rattata's which just isn't fun at all imo.
4 - No items in battle means no healing/status removal items or boosting items (those were in Gen 1 right? I can't remember its been a looong fucking time) it makes the game a shit ton harder because on some fights if you've got a Pokemon who can absorb a strong hit you can just spam hyper potions until the enemy runs out of those powerful moves, it just seems super cheap to me. I CAN use healing MOVES in battle (like Roost in later games, I really don't remember what if any healing moves are in gen 1, softboiled maybe?) but no items.
5. I've never done a Nuzlocke on Yellow so I thought this might be a fun extra rule, it limits my roster much more and gives Pikachu a 'leader' status in which if he dies I game over (instead of my entire party wiping).
6. I've always though nicknaming was a common nuzlocke rule, just more fun and gets you more attached to your characters.
7. I call this a bonus but it means I could get 3 Pokemon or 0, Safari game is such a random chance and since you can't battle like normal in most of my Nuzlockes if I only take 1 shot at catching anything I likely lose, making it a waste to go there (besides the items anyway)
8. So Gift Pokemon are fun, in Red/Blue its how you get Eevee, so if I get Eevee in Celedon City that all I can get in Celedon City, I can't fish nor can I get one via the game corner. This lets you potentially have some nice Pokemon and allows you to possibly choose a few Pokemon instead of just the fishing Pokemon you can normally get in a few towns.
9. No trading with friends or in game. I mainly use this rule to prevent getting an Onyx super early in Gold/Silver but I think it applies well here, the bonus exp alone traded Pokemon have is broken and it also makes pokemon like Alakazam unreachable who I think many of us would agree is insanely OP in gen 1. Kadabra is powerful enough IMO anyway to stand on a team as is.

It's less complicated then it sounds honestly and most of the additional rules are for very specific things instead of the broad rules most Nuzlockes use.

I'm so tempted to get this, but holy fuck I am not happy with the £8.99 price tag. Though if this was G/S/C I'd buy it without second guessing.

For some reason SS/HG never quite did it for me, I need Crystal back.

I'll probably jump on Yellow eventually. Because it was a big part of my childhood
until Crystal
, and the day that internal battery died and fucked up my game? Oh boy.

Think I'll put on the Twitch Plays archive in celebration. And maybe some speed runs too, never saw a speedrun of Yellow.

So the run became a Nuzlocke one. My team before going through Viridian Forest is Tesla X the Pikachu, Rat Rod the Rattata, F(-22) Raptor the Spearow, Boeing the Pidgey and Buggy the Caterpie. I was using the no duplicates clause but for now every route had a new mon.

And now is when the great grind begins to get something that can even touch Brock's pokémon.

You guys, when I was a kid Hypno used to creep me out.
That was before you read his dark pokedesk entry.

Hypno was just weird. Just standing their with his hypnotic ring

I find it funny how you all are just starting whereas I am finishing up training my Yellow team for the elite 4 tomorrow, then again I am playing the cart and I got sidetrack delaying me from finishing the game last week. ¬_¬;

He kidnaps a little girl in FireRed/LeafGreen

Hypno is a funny Pokémon

Is it possible to get Missingno in Yellow w/o trading?

Yes by using the Mew glitch.

Is it possible to get Missingno in Yellow w/o trading?
Yes, but it involves the Mew Glitch and has limited uses. Perform the glitch as normal (fly away from trainer, fight another trainer, there's guides out there), but then go fight a Ditto in the wild (without returning to the first trainer's route) and have it transform into your Pokemon which needs to have a special stat of 182, 183 or 184. Go back to the first trainer's route and the Fossil or Ghost MissingNo. will appear. The reason you need one of these is because MissingNo. in Yellow is much more dangerous than in Red/Blue due to code shifting and you need the ones with "natural" sprites to avoid damage to the game.

As I said, it's nowhere near as easy and not really worth it. Get a Red or Blue copy to do the glitch multiple times.

Bought Yellow, got to Pewter City. The goddamn memories.

Still a fucking masterpiece after all these years.

Beat Brock. I need to go back and level up some mons though. My Squirtle is the only useful team member I have.

I'm up for getting a Mew using the glitch. Is there any way to get more than one?

You guys....

The real truth: you can start with any Pokemon game. Each one is designed as though they were somebody's first and have similar enough mechanics that your skills in one will transfer over to the others. If your goal is to experience as many different Pokemon species as possible and have a customizable trainer, X/Y is a good start. If you want the most recent game with a brighter pallet, more Mega Pokemon (there are some Mega Evolutions in ORAS that are incompatible with X/Y), and overall more improvements at the expense of a smaller pool of Pokemon to choose from, pick up ORAS. Both are great. I like ORAS more, especially because the soundtrack is way better, but both are a good choice.

I will say that R/B/Y are pretty archaic by now, but you might feel a cool sense of second-hand nostalgia by playing it at the same time as the other people here and then moving onto a newer game from there.

You really can't go wrong. Pick the one with the coolest cover to you. Give your Pokemon cool nicknames. Pick your favourites. That's really how to do it. Then, if you want more, consider checking out the competitive mechanics, which are surprisingly fun and full of depth.

Yup. It was from the Nintendo Official Magazine Pokémon guide magazine.

Pokemon-2.jpg

I still have that, used it a lot during my playthrough of Red and eventually Yellow. That guide taught me how to play Pokémon as I was struggling after Vermilion City as I had no idea where to go next.

- Critical hit chance is based off your speed. Which is why Slash + Persian is a legit thing
- Blizzard has 90% accuracy, and can be bought as much as you want, so just stick it on whoever.

This answers so many questions I had as a kid

Two trainers give Mew for the glitch: The Youngster on Route 25 with Slowpoke and the Swimmer in Misty's Gym. You can also modify the glitch later on and make a wild Ditto transform into your Pokemon with a special stat of 21 after fighting a trainer.

Sounds complicated. I'll look into it...

Guess I will go to the nearby Tsutaya later and get me the blue nostalgia package version. First time playing the game in Japanese tho. Would have been great if it was a multi-language release like they do with the recent Pokémon games.

Other than briefly playing a bit of ORS 3DS last year, I practically have zero experience with the series and have never played an entire Pokemon game. A relative of mine who has played the series for many years is planning on getting Red and I'm going to get Blue tonight, we're going to play and battle through both together, should be great fun and discovery. :) It feels kinda crazy that I missed out on Pokemon all these years but I guess I never had the time until now for whatever reason. Plus the original games released not long before Ocarina of Time and that's all I could think of at the time aside from the rest of my games.

Does it really matter who I choose as my starter?

I might need to pick one of these up. But which one? I can't decide.

I played the hell out of Red when my cousin gave me a floppy disc with it installed years ago, but never beat Blue. I bought Yellow when it first came out and played it a good amount too, before selling it.

Red for nostalgia because it's my favourite? Blue because I never beat it? Or Yellow because it's the definitive version?

It doesn't really matter, but just know that Charmander is hard mode, because the early gyms will wreck it.

Also not necessarily trying to dissuade you from getting these, but you should know that these games really aren't the best introduction to the series.

Not really. Charmander will have a tougher time with the first two gyms since they are rock and water but that's so early in the game it doesn't even matter.

Thanks for the advice, will avoid Charmander. And I know the GB games aren't recommend to start with but my family member was so excited when he found out these we're coming to VC so a lot of the fun will be me playing for the first time along with him reveling in the nostalgia, plus I have an itch to play old GB games lately. :)

starter actually only matters for the first 1-2 gyms where you dont have a plethora of other options to use instead. favorite way to beat brock when choosing charmander (other than just solo leveling him and grinding to 16 to evolve) is catching a caterpie and evolving it to butterfree. also a good option in yellow

I play Pokemon casually, meaning I've finished every game but I don't get too deep into the complexity of stats for true competitive play.

I still think RBY is a great place to start, as long as you have tolerance for dated games. The GBA remakes are more ideal, but the original Pokemon games are just as fun, accessible, and charming as they ever were.

I have a little question... Are this game language compatible for trading or trades just work only for games with same language?

I'm about to buy Blue version (English language) but if this means that I can't trade with everyone because language ver complications I'll be very disappointed... :/

Sounds good. Yeah, I don't mind when a game is really dated as long as it's fun, I like experiencing the history of a series. And like I said I have an urge to play old GB games lately.
