Final Fantasy IX PC/Mobile |OT| How did the source code survive?

Honestly, I wish I could turn the checkpoint saving off. I can manage my own saving.

Is there even a sign when the game is autosaving?
I haven't noticed it. I'm still manual saving on every Moogle I come across just like old school.

Just manually load your game and ignore the continue option.

I think it auto-saves every time you enter a new screen, but I'm not sure.

I think so too, and it has saved my ass already. I have a habit of ragequitting RPGs when I die to a boss and realize I haven't saved in a while, and I've died twice so far already, very early into the game. Once in Evil Forest
I didn't abuse trance as much as I could and I forgot that you could throw a potion at Garnet inside the plant thing
and once in the Ice Cavern
to Black Mage Waltz 1
. They were rookie mistakes both times because I'm ultra rusty with JRPGs, but in both cases I hit Continue instead of stopping and lo and behold I was loaded right before the boss. Shit is a godsend for scrubs like me.

So to help celebrate the release of the game for possible new players and because I have nothing better to do, here are some quick tips and advice that you may or may not know. These are also not factoring in boosters, btw, so if you wanna use those then go ahead.

  • Jump Rope seems like a killer, but it really only requires patience. Looking for the "!" indicator is a bit of a red herring; the better visual cue is to watch Vivi's feet and press the button as soon as he lands. This is visually more consistent than waiting for the exclamation point, especially once the pattern changes. You can also listen for the sound of Vivi hitting the ground as another indicator.
  • Stealing is based off of Zidane's Spirit stat. Keep that in mind as you outfit him with stuff if you're going all-in with Steal.
  • Vivi's Focus command only raises his Magic stat by 25%. Yes you can stack it multiple times, but because of this it might seem a little underwhelming at the beginning. Still godlike though.
  • Dagger becomes obsolete as a White Mage as soon as Eiko shows up, but this doesn't mean she becomes useless. Summons are wicked underrated by a lot of people, and she can hold her own with them, especially after a certain character growth moment.
  • The swordfight minigame at the start of the game where you impress nobles is where you can get your first Moonstone, but only if you get 100/100 so good luck lol
  • If you're willing to do a bit of grinding (and by "a bit" I mean a TON), then you can spend time leveling Marcus while he's in your party, and all of his stat/AP Jewel gains will be transferred to Eiko when she joins your party. This won't affect her default level either!
  • The Ozma fight is honestly deserving of its own post, but the most important tip is that he cheats the ATB system and will get an instant action if you confirm anything while he isn't already in the middle of casting something.
  • All of the Beatrix fights are timed, so don't bother dealing damage to her and instead focus on stealing and staying healthy.
  • I'm not sure if it was fixed in the PC/Mobile versions, but Steiner's Sword Skill "Thunder Slash" is glitched, and will not work ever. Because of this, Iai Strike has a higher accuracy rating than its normal 30% because the accuracy of Thunder Slash was added to Iai Strike.
  • If you're going to put in work with Quina, then save the Golden Frogs. Having a Golden Frog stick around in the marsh will speed up the regen rate of all the frogs there. With that in mind, make sure there's at least one male and one female before you leave each marsh, in addition to a Golden Frog.
  • Speaking of Quina, (s)he is amazing at power-leveling during Disc 3. Directly outside of Daguerro, you can fight Grand Dragons. Those dragons happen to have a level that is a multiple of 5, hint hint

Great tips quoting for later.

The jump rope mini game is the worst in the entire franchise, even worse than dodging the lightings in FFX. I wish someone make a macro for it in the future so I can just get done with it. My thumb is not that coordinate and I often lose my focus after 100s or so jumps.

How is the speed modifier not just a single button that only activates while it's being held down?

Bad design decision. There are 3 trigger buttons with nothing assigned to them in battle but still, we have to pause to use the ''enhancements''. Right now the only Final Fantasy released that did the fast forwarding right was the PSP version of FF IV.

I never go for the 1000 jumps too lazy.

Got to 100+ and stopped so ended at 109 :p

Also can confirm that the custom resolution of 1574x1080 works on Nvidia.

Only problem is this will only work on my desktop, and not my laptop as well (Nvidia optimus doesn't let you make custom resolutions I don't believe).

Will have to see if the Intel output driver supports a similar thing through the official drivers but I doubt it.

But yea it does work. Silly that it's not just a toggle.

1574 x 1080? So I guess FFIX isn't actually 4:3, then, or it would be 1440 x 1080. Interesting.

I used 1440x1080 and the gray bars appear at the top.

Black bars on the sides, gray bars at the top.

Yea, apparently they thought that was a good idea..... toggles, Square... toggles.... solves everything ;)

Try clicking the exclamation mark with a mouse. Just put it on auto click or something, you can't miss by clicking too early or too late. At least that's what I read earlier.

I refuse to play this until someone develops a jump-rope cheat!

I spent an hour trying different click speeds in AHK, even trying my built-in mouse macro program to no avail. Vivi always gets caught slippin'.

Analog is working for me via Xinput and DS4Windows.

But the issue the movement is only 8-directional whether you use the D-pad or analog through Xinput (or anything else since it's not a Xinput limitation).

Unlike the PS version which you get to actually have decent analog movement. The PC version also doesn't discriminate the analog push between half and full tilt for walking/running which is really dumb, which makes the field controls better on the PS version..... from 16 years ago.

They didn't fix FF7 or FF8 PC with this either though, so there is little hope anyway. FF7 is a little understandable since the original never had it, but FF8 or FF9 on PS1 both had full analog stick control support.

Yeah, this is the problem. Apparently the mod above fix it.

No it does not fix that. Still limited to 8 directions on the analog stick, and no tilt sensitivity for running or walking.

These are limited by the game itself, there is an option in the menus for always walk/run for example, and tilting more while "walk" is default doesn't make the character run.

As I thought earlier it probably just updates Xinput to a new version or something.

That's what the mod says though anyway, just updates the Xinput library.

We'll see I guess.

Is there anything that fixes it for FF8 Steam? Has been out much longer....

Also, looks like the game doesn't have steam cloud support? FFVIII had it and I was able to play back and forth between work (on lunch only) and home, but I just checked and the save on my work computer was from yesterday and 2 hours behind the save I have at home.

On the subject of the analog stick, there is an instance where it works as intended. When you bring up the large world map, the cursor you use to highlight key locations uses full analog. Just not anything else, so far.

Cloud sync seems to be manual. You need to do it from the main menu.

(I actually prefer it this way, for the same reason I prefer manual save slots over the one-slot auto-garbage that most open world games do nowadays)

Or well... still Disc 1 which is my usuall "fuck all I am gonna grind you to death" spot. Just get Quinna and his canon skill that does 9999 dmg if he has 1HP. Go outside and have Quinna hat 1HP and kill them easily. <3

Sorry that was a typo on my end ^^;

Yea, I already tried to explain what is meant by the differences between the original's true analog control and this digital-only control...

I don't think people are understanding what we mean but oh well.

One day, one day.

The problem is the backgrounds are not vastly superior, despite the other aspects being much better looking.

The FMVs and 3D character models look excellent, but the backgrounds look the same, if not worse.

It needs better upscaling/filtering.

I did concede in my post that the backgrounds let the visuals down somewhat. Can much really be done with them though? Is there sufficient detail there to upscale, I assumed they'd all need to be redrawn so I didn't expect much on that front. Compared to the 7 and 8 ports though I feel this one really holds up much better on a large HD TV.

Thunder Slash was fixed in the PAL version all those years ago, so you'd assume that it was fixed in this release.

Then again, with Square who knows.

The button to learn ability fast stopped working for me.
I push it, I select yes when it asks for my confirmation, but it doesn't work, also no star appears in the lower right.

Also I just completed the Hunt defeating Vivi and Freja but no achievement.
EDIT: This is not a bug, the italian translation is wrong actually. It's like "Beat Vivi during the Festival of the Hunt" while you need to let him win. Bah, who cares, but this sucks anyway, SE can't really do a proper italian translation.

Sorry for the lazy question, but is this worth a buy if I have the disc copy and usually emulate it? I looked through the steam forums and there seems to be a lot of bickering going on about good/bad port. I don't care about the boosters, but is anything significantly different otherwise that I should know? Skipping the battle intro sounds good, but the new textures, are they anything we haven't been doing for years with emulation and humping graphics up to 4k resolutions?

Probably my favourite game of all time and more than happy to buy again and again and again, as long as I'm getting.. well anything. Right now I'm thinking at least it should be stable? Although emus seem fine I always felt like you never quite know when it might shit itself.

EDIT: sod it, I bought it again, see what happens. I fuckin love this game.

If this version can be modded, it will become the absolute definitive version of the game, and will do full justice to it.

Currently, it has good looking characters and hideous backgrounds, as well as annoying interface.

Game is completely unplayable with an Xbone controller. I can't even get past the language selection screen because it seems to be dragging back and to the left? I've got no fucking idea, but I'm not happy.

I've been having that problem too. Try unplugging and replugging your controller and then tab out and back in. That fixes it for me.

Does not fix xbox one controller, sadly.

PS - strange, i can't use nvidia DSR with this game, set 4k and it still renders at displays resolution (1080p)

It's a borderless windowed game. DSR does not natively work with it. You have to set your desktop res to 4k, then select 4k while in launcher to get it to work.

Start the controller after you start the game (not the launcher, the game), that works for me.

PSX emulation still deals with the vertex jittering. That alone makes this port a lot more tolerable for me at high resolutions.

Backgrounds, etc I can deal. Not really all that fussed and I'll take that over PSX jitter augahfdjsdjf.

I wrote a program to do the jump rope thing but for the life of me I can't get passed 133. I may need more resolution than milliseconds to get the timing right.

Couldn't you alternate or do a repeating sequence of a set of values to 'go between' the granularity?

Couldn't you alternate or do a repeating sequence of a set of values to 'go between' the granularity?

I don't think that's quite the problem I'm having. I think it's the C++ Sleep() function that i'm using doesn't necessarily hold to the exact delay you give it.
