Final Fantasy VIII OST is possibly the greatest work ever by a video game composer

Uematsu peaked at VI. He was pretty good up until The Last Story's final boss theme though, then he jumped the shark forever.

Not having played the game I went to listen to it out of curiosity. Eeesh.

Not horrible but I'm not sure what effect he planned on having with that phasing synth. Not terribly coherent either. Honestly, it sounds like something I would associate with Kingdom Hearts gummi ship sections, not at all something like a "final battle". And what in gods name are those wailing sounds?

Sounds like a callback to the Final Battle theme of FFIX to me. Same hardy rock progish style with piercing synth leads and even the same "spooky voices from hell" kind of intro. When I first heard it in the game I couldn't help grinning at how dumb fun it was. Fits well with the stupid final boss reveal out of nowhere.

(And if you're interested, DukeLongfellow, the more serious final boss music is actually Patina of the King, though it's still in line with that weird orchestral/electronic music mix he uses for a lot of the soundtrack)

This is true. IT was a really weird track. The rock intro sounded good but what the hell was up with the rest of the track.

The Last Story had some amazing tunes also.

Final Fantasy VIII and IX had amazing tracks. So good.

Eiko's theme is just so nice to listen too. Fits her sooo well.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
It's good. Fantastic, even.
IX > XIV:ARR > VIII, i'd say. VI\VII\X\XIII hang around in there.

My fav FF
but the music is not even the best in the series imo
XIV ARR is

Preach it, brother.

Soken has the torch now.
Dragonsong was mad good tho.

It's soooo fucking good.

I can't think of many games that have me watching the entire opening credits every time I booted the game up, I loved it from right then and it just kept on delivering.

I like the IX soundtrack better (as does Uematsu himself), but the VIII one is great too. One of the only things I liked about the game.

In total agreement with the OP. FF VIII soundtrack is truly something special. I listen to it all the time tbh. Fisherman's Horizon is an unbelievable track, along with Roses & Red Wine (I believe that's the title). I also love Martial Law!

For me, the FFIX soundtrack follows closely behind the soundtrack for VIII.

When it comes to Final Fantasy I only listen to the battle themes, maybe the overworld theme, and the final stuff. I basically pick and choose what I want to listen to on their soundtracks, and I can't really say any of the FF's are my fav soundtracks because of that. Soundtracks I can listen to without skipping through, or without listening to just a few are what I can say are the "best".

That's definitely a strange way of spelling Chrono Cross

I love Uematsu's work but I was always partial to Mitsuda as a composer and Xenogears and Chrono Cross have incredible OSTs

Absolutely loved it. Not the best i've heard, but definitely up there. Square Enix games pretty much always have amazing music.

Of course, I was playing on the Steam version so half the songs wound up getting butchered but even then they were still pretty great. (Galbadia Garden's intro is almost painful)

The OSTs even as appreciated as they are from the PS1 era FF games, and Chrono Cross....

Still under-appreciated. They are some of the best ever and probably will remain that way for a very long time.

It's hard to pick many modern games that will ever reach those levels. Some come close, but even that's not too often.

It's not even Uematsu's best work. I really wish his PS1 stuff didn't sound so shoddy. Tinny-ass, unnatural-sounding samples, although they get progressively better with each game, heh. The likes of Shimomura and Mitsuda were destroying him that generation.

There are some good tracks in FF8, but overall I feel indifferent to most of it these days.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
It's a great OST and was shocked the OP didn't include The Extreme as one of the best final boss themes in a jRPG, but thankfully enough people have corrected him in this thread.

Nothing can beat the XIII-2 OST. Okay, i'm only half-joking here. It's surprisingly good for being the most unorthodox OST of the entire series. And the best thing to come out of the XIII trilogy.

Noel's Theme

Invisible Depths (final boss)

New Bodhum

Worlds Collide

Plains Of Eternity

Paradox

Crazy Chocobo (the most ridiculous Chocobo theme ever)

yeah I don't know, the vocals are pretty terrible imo. paradox and that final boss theme are good though, as is that stupid ass crazy chocobo tune.

Forever the GOAT OST.

FF7 runs it close, though.

FF7's melodies and compositions aren't as strong as those in 4, 5, 6, or 8 (or 10, even).

What really holding FF7's ost back though is the low quality synth used in the arrangements, though.

It's between this and X for me. Both are amazing.

SE usually delivers in the soundtrack department no matter what, the music was pretty damn good in the XIII trilogy. (Especially XIII itself).

Yeah this is still my favourite OST in the FF series.

Honestly I feel the game is widely underrated. Yeah the storyline disappears up it's own asshole half way through the game and the juction/draw system could have used more time in the oven but it was still a good final fantasy game.

Totally wronger about Nintendo's business decisions.

The vocals weirded me out at first, but they grew on me as I was playing through the game. They seem off (I wouldn't call them 'terrible') because English is not the singer's first language. And I respect that they had the courage to keep the vocals for the in-game version of the songs.

Pancake Mix

Copied someone else's pancake recipe
That's quite a bump. Generally I felt VII and IX were far better games and had better soundtracks, including these two from VII:

Final Fantasy VII - Opening Theme, Bombing Mission

Final Fantasy VII - Aerith's Theme

Final Fantasy VII - Anxious Heart <<< The GOAT

But even though I don't like VIII as a game, I can't deny these three tracks:

Balamb Garden - Wow at that soothing atmosphere. I close my eyes and see students playing Triple Triad. So good.

Dont be afraid - Awesome battle theme

The man with the machine gun - Maybe the most legendary battle theme ever!

Don't Be Afraid is my favourite FF battle theme.

I think one thing that FFVII is sorely missing is a comfy, homely town theme like Fisherman's Horizon or Dali that the other two PS1 FFs had.

What about Costa Del Sol or Icicle Inn?

Don't think those are comparable. Costa Del Sol's theme has jauntiness that sets it apart, and I always found the Icicle Inn music to not really sound homely, it's a bit odd sounding. I guess it makes sense since it's close to the Crater.

Oh I didn't mean terrible from a technical perspective (I don't particularly care for pronunciation, not being a native speaker I can't even understand most lyrics anyway), more from a stylistic point. I find that very few games manage to do this kind of "pop" vocals in a fitting way, and most of the time they need to take place in a fairly realistic and urban world for them to work (No More Heroes 2 and the Persona games pull it off well for example), otherwise it just feels very cringey and inappropriate.

Agreed. Anxious Heart is incredible. I used to listen to it on loop when coming back from college late at night. Really fitting with the almost empty subway and streets.

Woah quite an old thread but still very true for me personally.

The whole final disc has amazing track after track. You've got The Legendary Beast which is then followed by Maybe I'm a Lion which then goes into The Extreme probably one of the greatest boss themes to exist. It all finishes with The Ending Theme which has Eye's On Me Orchestra version(the best) and the Final Fantasy Theme and Liberi Fatali arranged. Absolutely gorgeous soundtrack and that's only one disc.
