Okay after beating the 3rd level I fucking get all the praise and hype. Once the Hellknights started showing up shit started getting a bit more exciting.

I have to hand it to them... I don't how they bloody did it but this works and it works well and somehow I think it shouldn't but here we are.

I can't believe this game exists in 2016 and that it's this fucking good. I'm about six hours into the game on Hurt Me Plenty, and I'm having a hard time coming up with a first person shooter that I had more fun with. The closest one is Wolfenstein by MachineGames and the original Crysis.

I'm playing it on PC, and at times, it's unfathomable how it looks this good, while also maintaining a rock solid 60fps at ultra with all of that chaos on the screen. Excellent gunplay that packs a punch, sick guns, responsive and fluid movement, top notch level design that offers lots of options and verticality, fun secrets, creative and pleasant art direction, KILLER soundtrack, and great enemy variety.

While I really enjoy story driven games, sometimes you need something like Doom that doesn't let story get in the way of fucking shit up. So far the story is, "find cool guns, kill demons, and kill them dead", and I don't even care because everything else is just fucking phenomenal. This is my first Doom. I fucking love Doom.

I take it you haven't played very many games here lately, eh? That's pretty bog standard size for games these days.

.

Oh I figured they are just getting warmed up. Which has me excited. Playing on Ultra-Violence out of the gate and loving it.

CD Keys is selling Doom + all DLC for $39.99 right now...is this site shady? I'm thinking it is because that price seems bizarre within a week of release, but if others have used it I would like to know if this is a bad idea.

It's not all DLC, just the first DLC pack.

Fun easter egg if you haven't seen it but if you manage to die in lava as your burning alive Doomguy will stick his thumb up on his right hand just like in the last scene of Terminator 2.

Anyone has a high res screen shot of Doomguy fist pump Doomdoll? Even better of it's in PNG as well too, but not necessary. I kinda... need it, you know :))

Just finished. What an amazing game.

From beginning to end it was nothing but enjoyment. I felt like a kid again, discovering something incredible and unexpected. Its hard to articulate just how enjoyable Doom is, other than "sheer childlike joy."

I can't remember the last time I felt this way about a game, and I imagine it'll be a long time until the next one.

A+, Bravo id.

just finished. 10hrs with a lot of exploration and secrets passed up. that was great. maybe another playthrough while trying to get all the secrets is in order.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
The biggest problem with this game is the sound mixing. The guns don't sound as poor as they did in Wolfenstein but they are still nowhere what I would call great. Considering the tone and gameplay the weapon sounds should be incredibly meaty and satisfying but they somehow sound flat. Is the Doom guy a ninja or something? You can barely hear his footsteps. By default the voices are mixed in too loud but there's a slider for that so that's not really any issue.

The sound design for the OST however is fantastic. The dynamics seem to flow perfectly with how the on screen action is going, and it fits in perfectly. Would I ever listen to it outside of the game? No, but for the purposes of the game I don't really have any complaints.

Agreed that the weapons sound very tinny. Wolfenstein was worse, but it's not much better here.

My other minor complaint I have noticed is how certain spawn triggers can require precise pathing. Some enemies just won't spawn unless you literally walk in an exact spot or heading direction. Going for the kill medals on some levels I have already had a few occasions of failing to recreate some bonus enemy spawns due to this. Very minor, but when you have 3/4 of the final medal filled and are backtracking through these labyrinthine levels trying to get these spawns to happen...well it can feel as tedious and a bit frustrating, especially when you walk through a room and get nothing, only to re-enter the same room from the opposite direction and that is what triggers something.

Ultra violence is hard.
That's what I picked too. Just spent 2 hours on a battle. Last ready to dial it back considering how much it ramps up.

Wouldn't be such a kick in the balls if the load times on Xbox one weren't so long between deaths.

I was seriously hoping the final boss would be the Icon of Sin wall (giant head in Doom 2), but once you beat it up it would rip out of the wall revealing a body and start a fight against a 10 story high monster. That said I still liked what they ended with. It was animated beautifully too. Great game. Now they better get working on Doom's version of Old Blood.

Is it true that if you miss a weapon in one mission, they'll appear in future missions? Just finished The Foundry without finding the plasma rifle or secret rocket launcher.

Yeah, there are multiple chance to get the weapons.

Re-watching footage of doom 3, it's crazy how different it was from original doom.

Yep.

To be frank, this is the first time the series has really "returned" since D64 in 1997. I mean RoE tried and found a better balance than D3 vanilla ever did, and while it was a nice gesture, it still never really scratched that Doom itch and overall felt like a round peg forced into a square hole to try and quell the backlash to the game's mixed reception.

Granted I'm not one of the guys who just hates D3. I think it's a really quite an interesting game that tried to do its own thing and overall succeeded more than it failed, but Doom, as people perceive the series, it really just isn't, and most of the game's problems can be boiled down to id trying to make Doom as a series fit the format of a game that they were making. I think if id would would have just made the game a new ip and called it something else people would have received it better, and they could have done more with the format than they did rather than get bogged down trying to shoehorn Doom stuff into it.

Down the road I really wouldn't mind id making a Doom 3 - 2 that was a game that used the format of D3 and just applied it to something that didn't explicitly have Doom trappings.
