Andrew House surprised by timing of Project Scorpio announcement

I think Sony would be in a pretty bad place if they release more of a stopgap at the end of the year. They would then have a compromised version of VR locked to their hardware compared to PC and Scorpio which would be largely compatible and no real 4K support until they release their next hardware. I'm guessing they'll make some changes to either one-up Microsoft or bring the Neo more in line with what Microsoft is talking about and release it some time next year.

It's very weird that they're willing to announce 2018+ games, but not talk about 2016/2017 hardware. People seem to be eating it up though.

Maybe Andrew house should take his own advice when they announce games and then inevitably delay them.

Whilst ms does this as well , they at least get most of there games out on time . Don't see the difference between announcing hardware 2 years out versus announcing software 2-3 years out .

Announcing 2 consoles in one showing was definitely weird though , probably would have been better served just doing the one s announcement and waiting a few months for Scorpio .

Doubt it will have much effect on tanking Xbox sales since they are already getting beaten by Sony significantly .

I can see why MS felt the need to mention it, because they didn't really have many other huge announcements.

Sony had enough games for PS4 that focusing on the lineup for their existing hardware was the right choice.
Yup I said the same thing when E3 finished. Its kinda shocking when a Nintendo game announcement, gameplay clip got more of my attention than MS's.

Only thing that really stood out from MS's show to me was the hardware.

Apple really do announces in the best way.

I will love to see PS4 Neo announce with "available now".
I don't think Sony will launch the Neo 1 or 2 weeks after the official announcement/presentation. But 1 month later? Yeah, I think that's possible.

Announcing hardware early causes people to wait for the new hardware.

Everyone revolted against their new ideas because they didn't have the confidence to answer questions outside of their planned statements.

LoL nope Microsoft management knew perfectly well people would be against their anti-consumer vision so they tried to delay and cover true answers to questions people wanted to know.

The software announcements are a lot "sexier". We go nuts for hardware news here on GAF, but most of their consumers barely pay attention until it hits shelves or even find the announcement of new hardware somewhat onerous ("I have to buy another fucking console already?").

Particularly for games that aren't on the annualization list, you're unlikely to find anyone saying, "Fuck, another Shenmue game for me to buy? Guess I have time to brace myself, at least."

They also seem to have shifted tone a lot this year, with the only real "vaporware" project from their conference being Death Stranding, and let's be honest, that trailer would not have been there without Kojima's name attached to it.

I absolutely love my PS4, but this has been my biggest problem with Sony this gen. It's the reason why I couldn't feel as excited as everyone else while watching their E3 conference. Every mind-blowing game reveal just left me questioning when X would actually come out, as very few titles even had a release window outside of 2017.

These games do eventually come out and they've been pretty fantastic when they do, but... I don't think Sony should get a free pass here.

Looks like dude is shaking his pants since their entire narrative this generation have been power and sales due to lack of exclusives.

If the Scorpio is as powerful as MS says this could put Sony in a difficult position.

Sony confirmed the PS4 long before it was shown. It's almost Major Nelson's tweet 2.

Good thing you're not in the console business.

Btw, what's the about lack of exclusives? Sony has plenty of exclusives in development and will continue to throughout the PS4/Neo life cycle. The difference is that they didn't announce all the games at once... Sony also has many exclusives out currently.

A couple of them are at the top of the genre (across PC, Nintendo, and Xbox). Others are regarded as good quality exclusives. The two main games I'm thinking of is Uncharted 4 and Bloodborne obviously. Then there are games that aren't as highly regarded, but still sit well in comparison to other multi plats of the same genre (Ratchet and Clank, Infamous: Second Son, etc).

If given the choice I would wait that extra year and a half and have a console as strong as the Scorpio, rather than this half way point at an earlier release.

If Microsoft was as "aware" as you imply they were that consumers would "revolt" against their vision for the Xbox One, why even create it? At the end of the day their business exists to make money by selling to consumers.

They aren't a group of super-villains that planted a mind-control chip into every Xbox One they planned to sell. The Xbox One wasn't conceived as a Trojan horse for world-domination.

Did you even read his comments? He references the blowback to that as a reason why it won't be repeating the same mistake.

Of course not.

That's Windows 10.

(By the way, your update is pending. You should really click on that. You should really click on that button, Burdmayn.)

It's pretty obvious that the success of the 360 got to Mattrick's head when making the Xbox One.

Holy shit :D

Yeah, I don't think it was a smart move at all. They are not ready to show it, and they are not ready to even talk about it. They are making it sound like they are not sure why it exists themselves.

I think if they had announced Neo it would have taken the focus off of PSVR. Something which they definitely wouldn't want.

It's hard to disagree with him. Between the Windows 10 stuff and the Scorpio announcement, the theme of Microsoft's press conference basically seemed to be "do not buy a Xbox One." It's baffling. I expected the S announcement but I didn't think they were dumb enough to throw the Xbone under the bus with the Scorpio announcement a year and a half out from release.

Then again, maybe they're looking at pulling a 360 again and don't care about throwing the Xbone under the bus. They didn't exactly have that many new games to announce, after all, they almost announced more Xbox's than games.

They showed games, man. And also they didn't said then it is the most powerful console. Unlike MS who showed....motherboard and cooler. At least it's not a water-cooler.

As a consumer I appreciate what Xbox did by letting me know what product will succeed the current product. This is information I can use so I don't feel duped later. Furthermore, Xbox did this announcement to throw a wet blanket on the NEO before it comes out. So it makes sense why they did it.

Having said that, the Sony exclusives looked great and I will probably get a Neo too.

Project Scorpio announcement could be a bigger mistake than the Xbox One Reveal.

Most people will probably know there is a new console coming and it could result in people waiting for the next big thing.

They just gave away the coming 18 months to Sony.

It does smell a bit like them pulling an Osborne. And to top it off, they Osborne`d their recently announced this-year console too.

Microsofts announcement comes of as more of a reaction than anything else. There trying to set the narrative and force certain responses. It comes of as more fear on their end. So that Sony cant announce their console and say it is the most powerful and Microsofts constant affirmation of the teraflops says to me something about their feelings of inadequacy.

I dont know if its a good strategy or not to announce the console so far out. But a lot of what Microsoft does seems to be really reactionary and after the fact, their always behind with everything. I feel like they really do need some better people to get ahead of the game.

Best decision as people would have been disappointed. Sonys strategy is best and a quick release in october will do them well. Microsoft will have to rely on peoples goodwill next holiday as i really do not think its the best time to release a new console.

That could be possible. The Scorpio may not be that powerful at all. But the reactions are definitely there.

Supposedly Sony is already sending dev kits so the Neo may come sooner than we think.

I'm not sure what's so hard to get. Consumers waiting for games is good for developers while consumers waiting for consoles is bad for manufacturers. The only exceptions occur when your current console isn't cutting the mustard, or if you're introducing something so new that you need the buildup to tell the audience about all the new things the device can accomplish.

well sony confirmed psneo is alive and well. thats technically an announcement , an early announcement that we building shit. so?

There's a difference between making an announcement that might get a day or two in the news cycles of major websites before being completely drowned out by E3, and having something as the closer to your major E3 stage presentation.

The PS4Neo announcement probably reached about 5% of PS4 owners, mostly just those who already knew (from GAF, Kotaku, etc.) that it was a thing and were only receiving a fairly meaningless confirmation. The Scorpio announcement probably reached about 50% of XB1 owners, and perhaps more importantly, retailers.

I don't know what's so surprising about this. MS knew Sony has their new box coming, so now is a good time to take some wind out of those sails by saying "we have a box coming too, and it's more powerful than theirs." It makes sense.

Is there a reason everybody keeps saying Neo out this year? Did an executive say something I missed? At least in my mind I thought there was no way they'd launch it sooner than January. Especially to be in conflict with their lineup and PSVR.

The point of contention here is one of optics. For Andrew House it's easy to knock on the competition when they're down. But let's not forget folks, that consoles are alive and well. Xbox One is selling better than Xbox 360 was selling this time in its own lifecycle.

The PS4 is selling like hotcakes and that's why we all think MS is down and out. Admittedly it is weird that MS announced 2 consoles and that the Scorpio won't be out until late next year. But it's only weird because of the optics. It seems like Spencer & Co. are doing this rash thing by announcing Scorpio so far out only because they are second in the console race, only because seemingly they're scrambling for a semblance of life after PS Neo rumours blew up.

But let us all remember that it was Spencer who initially announced that a new update of the hardware may be on the way. What if it was Sony announcing that PS Neo would release in late 2017? I doubt some of you here on Gaf would posts all this doom and gloom stuff like many of ya'll are slinging at MS.

I admit that by announcing Scorpio so soon it may deflate MS's announcements and be the topic of discussion from now until the box is revealed and discussed further. It has certainly swept under the rug the fact that once again for holiday 2016 Xbox will have the most 1st and 2nd party exclusives.

Inside, Cuphead, ReCore, Forza Horizon 3, Gears 4, Dead Rising 4, Halo Wars 2 and all the 3rd party stuff that Sony is getting as well. PS4 is my main gaming machine as I use my Xbox One for exclusives only, but compared to Sony's 1st party offerings MS has Sony beat. What's Sony got? The Last Guardian, GT Sport, PSVR. In terms of 1st/2nd party softwate, arguably for the 3rd year in a row MS is king.

The point I'm trying to make is that by announcing Scorpio, Spencer & Co. have rendered some of their bigger accomplishments software wise, moot.

To be fair, Sony was most likely taking those 18 months regardless, so maybe MS are hoping Sony are equally damaged by the news.

I believe Microsoft felt forced to reveal Scorpio because they thought Sony would do the same. But instead they showed a lot of great looking games you can get in the console you already own in the coming 18 months.

Yeah, that's some odd strategy. The next 1,5 years PS4 now has a lock on both US and UK market, let alone the rest of the world. And those who decide to go PlayStation (or NX, for all we can say) in the meanwhile are most likely lost for the all new XBOX eco-system. MS should have fought for every single one of them, instead they basically said "hey, here's XBOX S, and you know what, here's its successor, so that's why it is so cheap!"

This is similar to my line of thinking. A lot of people on Gaf at least don't see a point of getting any Xbox due to the PC compatibility in the first place. I don't think announcing Scorpio will honestly do very much in the long run. This is no longer a "generation." This is it. Microsoft knows people will be stuck to a friend's list and ecosystem. they are trying to poach as many people as quickly as possible to get this race more even. We may not see a new "generation" for a decade.

Then it would be Sony making a terrible decision and I would assume that PlayStation 4 sales would suffer over the next 18 months as a result.

It's pointless to ask that hypothetical question, because it didn't actually go down that way.

lol, good to see the good old "only the holidays matter" classic. I especially love how indies count for Microsoft but don't for Sony. Top work.
