The speech spoke to me because I knew all of the graffiti writers he talked about.

I think for myself, 5 Pointz is a place that touched myself and my borough of Queens. In fact, it became known as the graffiti mecca. The best part of the location is that it was right next to the 7 train. So people going into Manhattan or people coming from Manhattan, the first/last thing they would see is this building covered in graffiti. I used to love seeing it and trying to spot new pieces. The Biggie piece was always my favorite.

It is a shame they torn down 5 Pointz.

I used to live in NYC for a short stint and I know the exact spot you're talking about. God tier street art.

Just finished. Holy fuck, that was SO much better than I expected.

Not sure what's with the comparison to stranger things Lol, both were fantastic, but are too different to compare IMO. Both are the same quality but with entirely different subject matter.

When is Part 2 of the season coming out? I can't fucking wait.

i posted this on my FB but feel it fits here cause its pretty much my review of this show...

I want to talk about the Netflix show "The Get Down." When I first saw trailers for it, I was excited because yo, its a fictional show about the birth of Hip Hop.... as a hip hop head who lives and breathes the culture, I was anticipating it greatly but cautiously optimistic. This could be a real let down, are they really going to have the culture of hip hop on display? Will they really show what its like to be apart of the culture?
Thankfully the answers are yes and yes. This show beautifully weaves every element of the culture....Djing, emceeing, breaking, graffiti and lastly, the crowd, with appearances of real legends like Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc (played by actors as their younger selves of course). They truly show what hiphop really is at its core. maybe I am coming from a place of bias, but I cant help but love everything about this show. it truly does hiphop justice. Not only that but the acting, directing, production value and soundtrack are all top notch. The sheer joy I get when watching this show, is reminiscent of how I'd feel in a cypher, or attending and watching a break battle, or watching a dj scratch a set or when attending an mc battle, or when checking out graf on trains and walls when I was in Nyc. Hats off to the creators for not only making a great show displaying real hiphop but at the sametime making it digestible for the non hiphop person (at least I think they do).
Some critics are bashing this show. And after seeing this show, I cant help but think either they are just haters, or out of touch, or just cant understand the greatness of this due to their disdain for this genre of music. Even if you are not a fan of hiphop, this show oozes quality in acting, writing, directing.... and some trying to say it isnt good because it isnt Stranger Things, which is the dumbest thing ever because these 2 shows arent even in the same universe to be compared.

If you are a hardcore hiphop fan, this show is a no brainer. If you are a casual hiphop fan, you'll like it. if you just started listening to rap when soulja boy came out.... maybe you'll like it? if you are a fan of music in general, you'll like it. like the night of, I have put this in my top tier already, and thats with just 6 episodes. cant wait for the next half!

ps. I hate Jaden Smith, but even He is good in this show. THAT'S how GOOD this show is.

I'm not a fan of hip hop, and don't care much about Jaden.

Still, I'm a bit of a fan of Baz Luhrmann and I think the overall package is a very competent work. I liked this show much more than I thought I would.

Defnitely looking forward to the second part.

Just finished the first episode, the editing is abysmal theres cuts almost every 2 seconds, its so jarring and badly done. And the main chracter guy is so annoying holy shit, his voice is so bad. Dialogue isnt great either. Not going to continue to watch

While I think your opinion is wrong, I'd give the second episode a shot. Lots of people disliked the first episode but liked the rest of the show.

Don't understand people who give up after the first episode. Pretty much everyone says the second episode onwards is much better.

Interested in watching since I'm starting to get into early hip hop. How much is

Just finished the first episode. Damn man, this shit is like emotional catnip to me. This may end up being a hot mess but I'm enjoying the ride so far.

Def has that Baz juvenile style with real danger contrast that I love. Emotionally effective, fantastic jams. Feels like an urban fable.

SWEDISH PERFECTION
Finished it this weekend, it was awesome! It strikes a great balance between the fantastical, cheesy, emotional, dark and funny with nice characters and awesome music. Also liked how they used the music in certain scenes, like cutting between two different songs and even using dialogue in time with the music. Glad that there's at least 6 more episodes coming!

I loved the origin story of

This and Last Chance U are the first netflix shows I've rewatched a whole season of. The services strongest output by a landslide for me

Is Last Chance U that good? It's a documentary, right? Its been on my Instant Queue for a while now. Need to just get around to it.

It's a documentary miniseries but its paced like a TV show. So good. Especially if you were a fan of Friday night Lights. Every school needs a Ms. Wagner

I do wonder how many people got turned off by that messy first episode.

It got me interested, I liked the stylistic qualities of it. But I'm sure for less patient/more prejudiced people it turned them off. Had a coworker who was about to write the show off after the first episode, told her to give the second episode a shot, and she got hooked.

I'm happy to see people on here that enjoyed this aswell, i feel like so many people just passed on this :/ Haven't seen anyone talk about this show at all outside of this thread. Which is a damn shame.

critical response has been uneven at best, harsh at worst. GAF's posts reflect that too. That said, if you're over 30 and you love hip-hop, this is one of the best tributes to that genre that i've seen. Beat Street used to be it for me, but this movie represents so much of everything I loved about hip-hop and NY and the culture as a youngin'.

I've had so many people call me to tell me to watch this show. Like, "Drop what you're doing and watch this NOW." It's a hate it or absolutely love it thing, and I'm definitely in the Love it camp. I'd go as far as saying that it's 'beautiful', and I don't just mean visually.

It is that good. It is compelling, and you start rooting for, and caring for, certain guys. Happy/sad when they make it/don't make it. And let me tell you, the show is beautifully shot. I mean, some of the shots were absolutely gorgeous.

So I kinda ignored this show when my friends were talking about it, because I have this thing with Baz Luhrman where I enjoy hating on him. And no, I don't really have a good reason to. I just do.

However, last night I took the plunge. Watched the first ep. I'm in love... this thing is awesome! Can't wait to get home and watch some more.

Funny to hear lots of people hate the pilot and prefer the rest. I thought the pilot had the strength of a movie director vision, while the rest is more down to tv scopes (while still really good).

The first episode has this epic adventure feel to its ending, that's crazy. It's more adventurous than Stranger Things and the Goonies!

agreed. love the whole season but the first episode had such an interesting vibe to it. kung fu campiness and teen melodrama. and the end was so dope.

Gotta bump this thread.

Just watched it all this weekend.

The Get Down's got more soul than Shang Tsung.

Seeing people post The Get Down > Stranger Things

I LOVED Stranger Things.

The more I think about it...the more I realize how many I got the fuck up outta my seat during the get down.
