You've miss inteprated; Not about Half-Life, but Rockstar
I fail to see how I'm misinterpreting. The amount of mainstream coverage Rockstar commands is unparalleled in the industry (apart from actual console announcements) and any announcement from them is absolutely an Event.

If they did have multiple protagonists I reckon we'd get a female one this time, especially with all the press they got about it being all men in GTA V

If it has a playable female character it'll be because they created a story that they thought fit that character rather than any sort of press coverage that the cast of GTAV had. Here's what they've said on that issue in the past

Right, but when you changed to multiple characters did you think of having a woman in a lead playable role?

We didn't really think about it this time. That's not to say that we couldn't or we wouldn't. This character set is just what came to us: it wasn't, "we've got X and Y so we need Z", we weren't trying to do it off a checklist – I don't think that will ever give you something that's believable or engaging. In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course. We just haven't found the right game for it yet, but it's one of the things that we always think about. It didn't feel natural for this game but definitely for the right game in the future – with the right themes, it could be fantastic. But for GTA V, this was the organic thing that came up, these were the characters what would display the themes we wanted to think about.

Hopefully we get the actual reveal not too later. I would hate for them to be teasing it now but only reveal it like next month.

one thing though, do you guys think the lack of Benz is going to alter the quality of the game? he really had alot to do with R* success and getting the original Red Dead Redemption in a working condition

http://www.gtarockstarfan.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Leslie-Benzies-close-up-1.jpg[IMG]
I'd imagine they have learned their lesson from the terrible time they had creating Redemption. Not only was it a clusterfuck until the Benz saved their ass, but we never got it on PC because of how much of a mess the code was, which lost them a ton of extra money.

exactly Rockstar isn't thinking "oh we need 1 white guy, 1 hispanic guy, 1 black guy"

GTA V featured 2 white guys and a black guy because thats the story they wanted to tell, and I always think this approach works out better

I love diversity as anyone else, but i think the "X Y Z" approach is not the best way for it

As someone who has never played, and many others here on GAF, is this game the ultimate western simulator? Or is it like GTA but in western times?

Do you guys think its time for Dan Houser to give up the writing reigns to someone else, I have great respect for Dan, but i think his writing is getting kind of "too on the nose"

No. God no.

Why? Rockstar games (GTA especially) have never been what I'd call "great stories" and being able to carve out a more personal story that you can change/influence would be leagues better.

I mean, Mass effect story vs GTA? No contest, ME hands down has a better storyline while allowing you to make your "own" Shepard.

Good
Bad
Ugly

I'm telling you. It's too perfect.

I have no problem with the 3 protagonist system from GTA V. wonder if they'll each have a unique "power".

Trevor's OP invincibility/slow down must live onnnnn

and then at the end of the game, all 3 of them have a duel and you have to choose which character you want to pick at the end

Y'all got me hyped!

Most people skipped all the creation stuff and ran with default male Shepard. Rockstar probably see it as a waste of time to implement all the extra stuff to make what you want to happen when no one will care or use it. That's my guess anyway.

It's the best western game and one of the best games ever made.

i'd never say never but it kind of goes against R* games' DNA. they're basically interactive movies, with the world being the character you get to interact with

save the YOUR STORY! stuff for elder scrolls, mass effect, ect. GTA, red dead, ect were never really about that

Nah, R* storytelling is so different then what we usually get in the industry, it would be a shame if they just change to be like everyone else.

"Next gen doesn't start until Rockstar says so."

Bring it! Bring all the death!

...

I'm genuinely excited and anxious to see what they've been up to.

Rockstar strikes me as a company that will move forward.

Still hoping for a remaster. My ps3 performance is not well, and only played a couple hours of red dead on it before it started acting funny. Would love a remaster to play while they continue work on a sequel that's hopefully in the works.

If we count the times read dead remaster or sequel was to be "announced" it could make for a nice bed story, the moment rockstar announces this shit I'll believe it, actually I'll be skeptical as this point even if they announce it lol

The more I think about this and just imagining a RDR game on the scale of GTA V with that level of fidelity makes me go seriously weak at the knees.

Looking back at Rockstar's ps2 success, its amazing how quickly they got their games out

GTA 3 started development in 1999 and came out in 2001

Vice City came out a year after GTA 3

and San Andreas, 2 years after Vice CIty

and all these are critically acclaimed games

ME vs. GTA? Sure. ME vs. Red Dead? Not on your life. I love the hell out of Mass Effect and games that let you write/influence your own story, but (beyond some of the Mexico bloat) Red Dead's story is on another level in terms of thematic resonance (particularly in regards to fatalism and technological/societal progress), intertextuality and mechanics as storytelling
...not to mention actually having a well written ending...
all of which I don't think would be nearly as impactful (or even possible to begin with) with a self-defined character and a branching story. Not every game needs to take the Choose Your Own Character/Adventure approach to work.

You're not wrong

Django is a pretty accurate depiction of the time to be honest as opposed to older westerns

For all the comic-opera trappings, Leone was quite the history buff. A lot of the sets and background events in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly were pretty on point, apparently.

His non-GTA (which is hampered by the type of game it is) writing has been fantastic so no.

This is worst than the GTA V wait, and that was painful.

well luckily its only going to be 1-2 day wait at the most before we get an announcement and/or a trailer.

GTA 5 was i believe announced and then 1-2 days later a teaser (and then a year long wait until the gameinformer and trailer 2)

hopefully that won't happen with this

The "will they, won't they" cycle lasted like 4 years lol

You're setting yourself up for disappointment with that.

Red Dead Revolver on PSN and now this... something is happening.

Red Dead 3 definitely incoming. Red Dead Redemption was an amazing game last-gen which also included a fantastic expansion (Undead Nightmare).

Not only is it the best western game ever made, it's one of the best games ever made overall. If you have a console that can play it, you should do that asap.
