Non-embarrassing photos of VR users?

You don't have friends/ family/ significant other/ children/ pets/ etc. that will give you shit for strapping a TV on your face to become more immersed in your escapist fantasies?

It's also not solely about looking silly. I already know a PSVR is going to be a source of contention in my family and I'll probably only use it on weekends or after my wife goes to bed. Completely shutting yourself off like that is so isolating. It feels weird enough playing games with headphones on when my wife is in the same room.

People who live alone won't have that problem, but people with families are going to have a harder time using VR. I have friends with really young kids who are interested in it but are resigned to not grabbing one right now because it's just not feasible to cut themselves off like that for extended periods.

I will have the same problem. Not sure I'm willing to invest the energy into convincing my S/O that VR is worth the money and sheer isolation it promotes. I will likely have to sit it out. As you mentioned, it's going to act as a point of contention. An even more pronounced one than video games already are.

Nostalgia! One of my childhood friend used to do this every time I came over to play GoldenEye with him. I beat him every time so he called me a cheater for looking at his screen and decided to cover himself and the lower half of the screen with boxes and blankets. What a time...

Add a decal and it'll make you look 200% better!

But who cares? If you care about how you look while you're using VR you don't get VR.

I'm not sure why you would even care how you look while using VR. Even if you got the headsets that slim, you're still covering your face with an electronic.

All she needs is a stream of drool coming out of her mouth and you've got yourself the perfect image to accompany your highly original "death by virtual reality" script for Law & Order/NCIS.

Also, I take back what I said about VR head gear being aesthetically ridiculous. Sort of. Masamune Shirow was able to make VR look cool years ago, but I think that may be cheating.

So even the PSVR didn't make you reconsider your opinion on the aesthetic appeal of VR? I say that one because you mentioned Massamune, and the PSVR look gives me all sorts of GiTS vibes. Love the look because of that.

unless this was non-consensual, which would be awkward.

I'm pretty sure she tweeted it. I found it on R/Vive with this title,

"Just saw the most AMAZING VR ever. The Rose and I is a must see at #GDC16 . #blownaway"

She is also snow cannon games chief Marketing Officer so I'm pretty sure it was intentional.

If this isn't the case then I agree with you and I can absolutely take the photo down though.

Edit: Found the tweet.

It avoids some of the more embarrassing aspects of a lot of the other pictures, but at the end of the day it's still a picture of a dude with a TV strapped to his face. Few people who don't have an active interest in VR are going to see that and think "Damn, pretty cool."

I'm excited for VR and I'm pretty much set on getting a PSVR this year, but a lot of people who have been following it for a long time are really underestimating what a source of ridicule this headsets will be. Zoned off in your own world in not a flattering look, and there's going to be porn jokes galore.

Go back and read old threads about Google Glass, it's the same thing. A lot of skeptics, but also a lot of people scoffing at anyone who thinks it won't be huge. Look how that turned out, and GG is imperceptible compared to a VR headset. Smartphones succeeded because of their utility and their main function, connecting people. VR has a long uphill battle before it becomes mainstream.

I disagree. Isolated images or videos of people playing without context will look a little dumb. As will playing on your own and someone walking in and seeing you flailing around like a loon. But there will be plenty of opportunity for people to watch what you are seeing and how you react to it, and connect the two things to build a picture in their head of what you are experiencing, and gain enjoyment from that shared experience. We've seen it already in things like fantastic contraption streams and I think we'll get more of that.

Not a single photo here isn't lame.

The problem is that all of the headsets are bulky as fuck.

Until the headsets get to the point that they are looking like sleek glasses or visors they will always look lame.

But who cares? If you care about how you look while you're using VR you don't get VR.

I'm curious how people think they'll shrink that small without some absolute breakthrough in technology. Fundamentally these things are trying to create an image across a huge field of view - it is small now and needs to increase. Considering you can move your eyes around too, how would you physically get light into your retina in a way that lets you have a tiny Geordie la forge style visor?

It's kinda fascinating that we're only roughly two years into VR and we've already managed more awkward gifs than we got in ten years of the Wii & Kinect.

What isn't fascinating is that you still have nothing better to do than shitpost about VR now that it's out and everyone agrees that it really is as legit as those that had tried it said it would be ;P

Still think it's just a gimmick/fad?

As I said in a previous post, I do still believe that VR is a gimmick or fad, definitely until they can work out a decent wireless solution that's smaller and requires less processing power in the future.

But don't let my lack of interest prevent you from enjoying VR. If that's your thing, I certainly hope you enjoy it, don't let my negativity sway your opinion in any way.

Edit: I never argued that it wouldn't be "legit", by the way. I'm sure it works perfectly fine. I just don't think the tech is ready to go on a mass market level, especially not at it's current price point. (See Jim Sterling's recent Jimquisition on the matter.)

Of course folks call the 100 million-selling Wii a fad and/or gimmick, so the definition of both terms seems to be fairly stretched these days.

Its cool, I just can't seem to understand what about it seems like a gimmick or a fad?

Is it the fact that it's insanely popular and that the majority of impressions have been positive so it's a "too good to be true" type of situation?

WTF is going on here?

If I recall correctly, that game was SUPPOSED to be about... humping some girl in outer space. But it was deemed too inappropriate for the convention. So the devs switched out the girl with a muscle man.

So that kid humping away at the inflatable sailor outfit thing is seeing himself humping a muscle man in outer space.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, here.

I think it's a bit too restrictive at the moment. Asking someone to strap on a set of bulky goggles every time they want to sit down and play videogames is a bit much. Of course, I don't even like wearing headphones all too often because I don't like how they completely block out the outside world, so I'm not entirely the best judge of these kinds of things...asking me to block out the outside world both visually and aurally kind of freaks me out. Edit: In the case of the motion-heavy games, it also falls into the same trap the Wii and Kinect does...a lot of gamers these days want to relax on a couch and play their games, not get up and active.

That being said, the best comparison is to the Wii U gamepad. Developers aren't going to want to spend any extra developer manhours putting effort into games or features that only a fraction of the audience will be able to properly experience, so once the honeymoon period of "Wow" wears off, you'll see more customers slowly stop using their headsets and in turn less developers will bother developing content for it. Because of this it'll be something of a downward spiral in support.

As I said, once the headsets can get shrunk down, involve less wires, and require less hardware to power, you may see a bit of a resurgence, but I think it'll never rise above the level of gimmick for most customers.

Edit: And again, this is not me wishing for VR's demise, I certainly hope the product is very successful, I'm just being a bit of a realist over the whole thing.

Here's one of me from last year's local gaming event.

You could change the roller coaster ride image on the screen to porn, and it would fit the pose.
