Ratchet & Clank: PS4 Pro Update details

Looks a tad soft to me compared to other Pro games I've seen. In any case, what is the resolution, have they improved AF? have there been any other graphical upgrades; shadows, assets, textures?

This is the most un-detailed info update I have seen on a Pro title patch.

Slowly warming up with the PSpro with some many games getting 4K downsampled modes for 1080p TVs. That means they're basically jaggy-free.

Tempting...

Ok Temporal Injection likely less demanding way than native 4k cool.
But that means you have more resources left you can use towards other additional graphic effects or performance like fps.
Unless this is more like those lazy quick patches not really optimised to take more use out of the Pro

I'm on the #team60fps here. This is the first game ever I couldnt stand 30fps, I think the gameplay took a big hit because of it.

Damn...I got about half way through this but pretty sure I wasn't subbed to PS+ at the time so my save won't have cloud saved (it's really trash that in 2016 you need to pay a monthly sub for this when the competition does it so much better for free). Going to have to start fresh on the Pro.

Some games are getting improved framerates just not an Insomniac game. They decided that 60fps was not worth the trouble and put out a press release stating none of their games would be 60fps. Their own market research showed that consumers prefer prettier games at 30fps.
If the game had great textures, 16x AF and lots of AA, I would have believed you, but all of Insomniac's last set of games have had IQ issues at this new dawn of 30fps for them.

Their 60fps games are much better, see ACIT. So I'd rather have 60fps games with lower resolution because their 30fps games runs slow especially for platformers and have bad IQ anyway.

I'm not even impressed with their IQ upgrades here, looks a bit blurry to me, but we shall see. What's this temporal injection anyway, why couldn't they just use checkerboard 1800p or native 4k 30fps locked if 30 is now their new motif.

IIRC during one of his interviews or during the Playstation meeting, Cerny mentioned that not all developers were using checkerboarding to get to 4K, and Insomniac was one of them carving out their own path for Spider Man.

I would take this for what it is - a chance to showcase an already pretty game, adds a title to the opening line-up that lots of people own and serves as a useful development learning tool without having to worry about impacting current development.

Come on... A game like this should have been 60fps for the Pro. That's a shame.

I don't think that Pro could handle such graphics in 60 FPS. Nonetheless the game should have been 60 FPS from the beginning. Another opportunity where developers sacrificed gameplay for eye candy. But its surely easier for developers to put efforts on graphics than on gameplay.

It seems like so. It's the first time I actually care about the Pro "improvements", since I have the game and like it. It's really hard for me to understand the meaning of this new console, since it does not improve one of the only technical things I care about. Framerate.

It does if the developer decides to target that, but Insomniac have gone on record a while ago saying they would rather push graphics than frame rates.

60fps will only be in a few games and it will never be standard.

Next generation will be 4k@30 and the generation after will be 8k@30.

Resolution will be king as pretty graphic can be shown better in pictures than framerate.

Framerate never bothered me. Once it doesn't stop to a crawl and becomes really noticeable I am happy at 30FPS.

I played through all the Ratchet games again recently and if I didn't know they were 60 I would have never of known and then when I got to Nexus which is 30 I never even noticed.

Either people are really sensitive to 60FPS or I am far more forgiving than some.

welp, if those are actual captures the improvements in IQ are huge, and that's disregarding the resolution bump.

Yeah. Like if Nintendo got Mario running 60 FPS on Wii U why not this? It's not even real 4k.

What do you recon the CPU load of Mario is, vs this...?

Most games are definitely going to be CPU bound getting to 60fps on the Pro. You could make the GPU ten times faster and stick to 1080p, but without the CPU scaling up near as much it's going to bottleneck updates per second.

"Higher resolution" doesn't really tell me much. I know it'll look better but I love to know the details too.

Glad they added a PS4 PRO support. What is the higher resolution they achieved? Checkerboard 1800p or checkerboard 2160p or native 4K? Will the PS4 PRO version pack increased graphical fidelity like with Horizon: Zero Dawn?

Didn't Cerny say that Insomniac was using a 4 million pixel technique or something like that?

No 60fps... Yippie.

No 60fps option means I'll be skipping this game for good. Really disappointing for a huge fan of the series.

Its not just about the CPU but everything else R&C has to render in the graphics space compared to Mario's simple way less demanding graphics load, to put it in simple terms.

Since Crack in Time actually, the best the series has felt in nearly a decade.

Wonder why.
Insomniac was upset that the higher 60fps is never mentioned/praised in reviews or even affect its overall score etc but better graphics always improve reviews and more positive.

So blame journalists and reviewers I guess

I don't know about Ratchet and Clank but both Spider-Man and For Honor will use an in-house better technique than regular checkerboard from what has been stated.

I'm having trouble in phrasing this in a way that's not a dig at you in particular, so I apologize in advance, but damn. Gamers are babies. :p

Pretty much. These damn pro threads are going to be full of people spouting that nonsense and complaining about the space the patches take up.

And they expect me buy a pro? If most developers are just prioritizing graphics and not gameplay enhancements that come with a higher framerate why bother? No 4k blu ray, still crappy controller battery/light bar and developers are prioritizing graphics over everything else. They want to stop people from upgrading to PCs yet they are constantly doing everything they can to prioritize my PC.

I don't think it's a pro thing rather that they won't focus on it in general. Like it or not, there is a large amount of people who just don't give a damn about the framerate despite the benefits.

Insomniac said in a press release they will no longer make 60fps games, just 30fps with graphics up all the way they can go.
