The Last Guardian review embargo lifts on December 5th at 7am PST/10am EST/16.00 CET

There's an embargo, but could you guys talk about the Pro support?

I think the only thing we've heard is an HDR patch but otherwise we don't know about Pro support or if it will even be there at launch. I think someone mentioned it might be coming out later on down the road.

Exactly what it means? Do you see many 3D linear puzzle platformers coming out at retail stores these days? That's not the kind of game design in vogue nowadays, which is a shame.

Exactly what does this mean though? There weren't exactly many games like The Last Guardian in the PS2 ear either. Is GTAV a PS2 era game because there were several GTA games out then? Last time I checked Rachet and Clank did gang busters on the PS4 and that was a PS2 game remake.

Scores will have a wide range but I'd guess it settles in somewhere around 75-80.

I expect to like it, but I'm not convinced that it'll get consistently high scores (partially because of it's niche appeal) or be a masterpiece (despite the hype), but hopefully I'm wrong.

So by PS2 era game, you mean "3D linear puzzle platformer"? Why not just say that?

It was originally scheduled to come out in 2011.

And "feels more like a PS2 era game" is such a complete nothing statement. What does that even mean?

It's been so long since a Team ICO game came out that it resides in that place in my head. It's respect, not criticism.

Ouch, that's not a good news. I don't want to start the game without the Pro support so I could skip day one and cancel my pre -order :(

This was my hesitancy about buying the Pro.

Insignificant or non-patches for the game. This was one of the big games/reasons I bit on the Target deal this week.

To be fair this game was supposed to have released before the Pro was to come out and was thus never required to even have a pro patch like any other game that came out before the Pro did. However it was delayed until after the Pro launched so support was always a bit of a fuzzy issue. I think it will get Pro support but I don't expect anything crazy like 60 fps but I will expect checkerboarded 4K.

Yeah, it's such a nothing statement. We have well-understood genre descriptors, let's use those.

The same descriptor was used for Recore, but in that case it meant "still an open world 3d game, but terrible".

Can someone give me an elevator pitch on this game? I've only seen what was shown at E3 and not much else about it.

Well if you don't mind PewDiePie too much or just want to mute the video, he got a hands on preview of one of the early sections of the game. He's honestly not even that bad in this video and he's a big fan of the series as well. Its one of the better play throughs that shows off the game well and doesn't really spoil anything.

Damn this video is almost at 13 million views.

A 3D cinematic platformer that plays like a cross between Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, as your young hero must work together with a towering creature. Platforming, puzzling, atmospheric vistas and environments, and bonding with your giant bird-cat-dog thing

Spoilery guess? :

One of them, or both, will die.

I just can't picture it ending any other way.

Is this joking about what I think it's joking about?

The video is set in a Japanese game store named “Game Jungle,” and the manager is showing the 2009 schedule to a younger employee, asking him if he knows about The Last Guardian. The kid answer that there was indeed something like that, but he forgot about it.

Then they get a phone call, and the young Employee is surprised by the fact that the customer on the phone is asking to pre-order the game.

Basically. Its the second of a series of commercials about the long wait for The Last Guardian. There will be one released every day until the games release next Tuesday.

In what way? This wasn't the usual development hell. Troubled sure, but it wasn't torn up and rebuilt and rejiggered like myriad other games that had long developments

Why wouldn't say the reception to The Witness be a good analog? An unusual game with unusual gameplay and presentation by a creator praised for his singular style and focus, a project hyped and anticipated for years, a title harkening back to a kind of gameplay that hadn't been fully captured in a while (Myst-like and Ico-like), many many delays over many years, secretive marketing, and a vision that basically remained unchanged from the start

You can see the exact same starting areas and puzzle ideas in the earliest super-pre-alpha prototype and the final release of The Witness, and you can see the same moments and gameplay scenarios in the Project Trico prototype and the 2016 footage of The Last Guardian

That makes sense and yeah you're probably right. However, I think that TLG faces a tougher challenge to follow up a game that's widely considered to be one of the best of all time (and while Braid is very much loved, I don't think it's as acclaimed as SOTC) and that's where the long gestation could creep in the minds of people reviewing it. Any shortcomings could trigger a "wait, we waited all that time for this?" reaction and it's going to be compared not only to SOTC, but to nostalgia enhanced SOTC. And that's a beast.

To be clear, I'm not talking about the game's quality here, I have no doubt in Fumito Ueda and the team. I know I'm going to love it, but unless it's truly a masterpiece beyond any complaints (which is possible but I'm trying really hard to avoid spoilers so I don't know yet lol), it could be scored lower than it should due to the expectations around it. The Witness was never thought of as a flagship title for a console, TLG is arguably that for 2 generations in a row. It entered gaming's imaginary as an unobtainable game, which could lead unfairly to disappointment.

Agro living but having a broken foot in Shadow of the Colossus made me sadder than if he died.
I was thinking more Trico going feral after you spent hours developing a bond with him. Or having to willingly abandon Trico or the boy

Or maybe Trico does die, and then you have to play a last section as just the boy, so the loss and loneliness can really sink in

Considering how in Ico
you play a good part of the game without Yorda, complete with a sudden shift in color to reinforce how dark the moment is for Ico, I wouldn't be surprised if something similar happens in TLG, even if it doesn't necessarily last until the ending.

You know I don't think its going to be a sad ending. If anything I can see it be something like the boy and Trico part ways when freed from whatever their journey is supposed to be about. Could even be that Trico starts growing up and as it matures it longs to leave the boy and he lets him fly away ;D Sort of like Ash letting Butterfree go!

I'll be having my 4K TV set up.the day after The Last Guardian comes out... It's going to such but I think.i can wait another day or two. :p

Played it for 2-3 hours, it's just as I hoped it to be. Intense and emotional.
Trico is loveable beyond expectations, controls are sometimes wonky, but got used to it after 20 mins.

Fantastic game.

I wonder how many on GAF will have the game early/this weekend. Would an early impressions thread be warranted?

Thank you for posting your early impressions of the game. Reading this sort of thing makes the waiting easier.

I'm happy to hear it. In the last few weeks, I was getting really nervous and had some serious doubts, so it was a huge relief that it really delivers. Long live Ueda!

Very happy to hear this. I will buy this game regardless of reviews, as ICO and SotC are two of the most powerful games in gaming history. But I'm still a bit weary considering the problematic development of this game.

If you don't mind me asking, are you playing on a standard PS4 or the Pro? How is the framerate?

It may have been long and rocky but it's still the game that was planned from the start down to similar moments.

I'm finally investing in a PS4 next week, my first purchases will be this and FFXV. It's like a decade of waiting coming all at once, like a dream. ;-;

I waited so long for this.
I bought the PS3, because FFvXIII and The Last Guardian looked like they would release after a rather short development time like 1 year or so. Now, I got my bachelor's and master's degree in science while waiting for the game.
I also had the first sex somewhere along waiting for the games.

I'm playing on a PS4 Pro, and it's smooth so far. Haven't seen it on a standard PS4, so I can't compare (but maybe the Pro isn't even supported yet, and it's the same on both). I'm not really good at estimating framerate, but it seems steady 30+ without noticeable hiccups.
