How is Kevin even the good guy in Home Alone 2?

Unlike in the first film, he can't even claim self-defense for the sadistic traps he lays out. In Home Alone 1, defending the house was the point; Harry and Marv wanted to rob it, so he laid the traps to stop them. But in Home Alone 2, Harry and Marv don't care at all about Kevin's uncle's house; they don't even know about it until Kevin leads them into it. Their target is the toy shop. Kevin foils Harry and Marv as soon as he photographs them in the toy shop; the traps he lays in his uncle's house are completely extraneous and serve no actual purpose other than to torture the "bad guys". And Kevin's traps are much more extreme than in Home Alone 1, crossing into outright murder attempts with stuff like kerosene-doused ropes and high-voltage electrocutions. H's like a child version of Jigsaw.

I just felt bad for Harry and Marv in 2. Especially Marv.

I thought Kevin was the target in Home Alone 2 after the whole Shop thing? So even after all the booby traps, Harry & Marv are STILL trying to get Kevin.

He stopped their robbery. They then chased after him. They could have just ran, but instead they chose to pursue this kid.

The Home Alone movies apparently exist in a universe where things like electrocution, catching on fire, and being hit in the head with heavy objects are much more survivable than in ours, so you can't really judge Kevin using our universe's rules.

Before the bird lady saves Kevin at the end Joe Pesci was about to straight up murder him, so no I don't think Kevin can be seen as the bad guy.

That was their second attempt to murder him. OP is like those YouTube videos with flimsy premises trying to turn an obvious plot on its head. No, Kevin was through and through the good guy. Although he was more extreme in the sequel but I chalk that up to peak franchise popularity and bigger budget. It's not enough anymore to have a bad guy hurting his feet on ornaments.

This so much. We all know what the predator can do but with enough prep time Kevin becomes a sadistic fuck.

Predator : let me use my camouflage

Kevin : let me lure his invisible ass here and set him on fire so that I can smell his burnt flesh to find him.

Bird Lady: So what are you doing alone on Christmas Eve? You did something wrong?
Kevin McCallister: A lot of things.
Bird Lady: Did you know that a good deed erases a bad deed?
Kevin McCallister: It's late. I don't know if I'll have enough time to do enough good deeds to erase all my bad ones.
Bird Lady: It's Christmas Eve. Good deeds count extra tonight. Think of an important thing you can do for others, and go do it. Just follow the star in your heart.

The good deed being stopping the two from stealing the money meant for

They chased him the Moment they saw him in New York and wanted to kill him. They approached Kevin and attacked him.

Marv and Harry were literally going to murder him in Central park in revenge before anything else happened between Kevin and them in ha2. Kevin was morally justified. They could have stayed away from him and that house but came in anyway to murder him yet again.

Im honestly not really sure either movie earns the switch from cotton candy sweet charms of the holidays to excessively violent 20 minute Tom and Jerry live action cartoon. Kevin is legit sadistic.

What always gets me is that they bothered to even head into the house after 1 trap

Their justification is that he took their photo but they were already escaped criminals who left proof it was them everywhere they went. Why would they care about their photos

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Kevin would have done pretty damn well in Battle School from Ender's Game lets just put it that way.

Head canon is that Kevin is an alternate timeline Batman in later life because his parents never came home.

It wouldn't shock me. That home from the first Home Alone is in a fairly wealthy neighborhood suburb of Chicago. Chicago was Gotham in The Dark Knight.
