Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
I'm hoping there's an in-game explanation. Maybe completely different dimensions/realities?

Isn't the title enough of an explanation? Mario will travel to strange worlds outside the Mushroom Kingdom using that hat-shaped spaceship, and one of the worlds he travels to on this odyssey is a realistic city.

My Take :

An odyssey is an epic journey. In Homers Odyssey we read about Odysseus great 10 year journey from Troy to his home. While Odysseus is gone it is presumed that he has died. His wife must deal with unwanted suitors vying for her hand in marriage.

In nintendos epic tale Mario is the one wandering far from home. He is cast in surreal realities fighting constantly to overcome and push onward toward the mushroom kingdom.

Every incarnation, regardless of setting is inseparable from his overarching quest to get home and save Peach. The worlds are varied and secretly designed to be disorienting to the point of dissociation and total loss of bearing both physical and mental. The path is laid down by Bowser to mislead, overwhelm and drown Mario in challenges and environments so diverse no mind or body could traverse them.

Not unlike Super Mario 2, this may all be a dream. Like Galaxy it may be an adventure through the cosmos. Even beyond - to dimensions outside the traditional domain of understanding.

But Mario is a hero. And as such his journey will be a heroes journey. However daunting and unfamiliar the territory he will press forward and reach his home.

I'm feeling really mixed about the art direction overall but I guess that's to be expected when every world has a different art style. Really don't know what to think, though I'd have preferred a unified, consistent art style.

Thinking about it more, maybe they had a lot of great but varying ideas for locations to take Mario so they came up with a concept where the could include them all?

Looks interesting, but why does every pedestrian look like a mobster? lol
Hopefully they won't let Mario try to fuck a real human like they did with Sonic.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
This is obviously in the Mario Bros Super Show timeline

I do wonder if they could have released it on Wii U...

Probably, some effects and textures would be toned down and it might have to be 720p30fps instead of 720p60fps with a rare drop like 3D World. Mainly because the levels look like they are more detailed, bigger/open and have more going on based on the trailer.

Looks really cool. I hope some of the dimensions/worlds are even weirder and more abstract, assuming we haven't seen all of them.

Wasn't expecting a negative reaction, I thought it looked amazing.

It's mostly the inconsistent art-style. Mario has always been stylized. Now there are these realistic elements that look really boring, flat and out of place.
Gameplay is probably really good.

That city and the jungle specifically looked really bad imo. I hope to god that i don't have to spend much time in that city and that it's not an open world type of city. But we'll see.
It's not like i'm not going to buy it or anything.

Same here. This is my most wanted game of the year now.

I like the city as well. Rope skipping, bouncing of caps and swinging on traffic lights, cap hopping from skyscraper to skyscraper: looks like a lovely gameplay sandbox,

Happy to hear it's 60 fps. It looks like the developers are having a ton of fun making this game, everything looks wildly creative and interesting. Yeah, the city part looks drab and boring, but they have a lot of time to jazz it up and stylize the graphics to a more mario-esque aesthetic. I have a feeling this game is gonna be delayed to 2018, but here's hoping its gonna make it in time for Christmas.

It was probably initially planned for Wii U and then pushed back and reworked when it tanked to be released on the Switch. I think that probably a few early Switch titles were developed in the same way. Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart Switch have this feel to them, though the latter's additional content would have probably just been DLC for MK8.

It amuses me that all the males in NYC look like noir detectives or some shit.

Hell, all the humans look strangely suited and booted. I wonder if that's intentional.

Looks awesome. Graphics are already very nice and will be much better by release.

Remember how 3D World looked like a 3DS game when first announced? And ended up great visually.

I think this and Zelda are gong to be the two best games of 2017. And this has now taken Zelda's place as my most anticipated game. Watching the trailer again and I couldn't be more thrilled with the direction they're taking 3D Mario.
