Feels like it will suffer this year. There is little meaning to buy it day one, considering the price and the games available at launch, though some great games will still be coming out this year. I'm guessing they have a few Wii U ports for this Holiday and maybe even another new game. Combine that with a price cut and the system is competitive next year.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I don't understand why a Nintendo console will never be granted a launch price point of 300 - no matter what (!) - while Playstation and Xbox are always hovering at prices beyond that at launch. I just don't understand the double standard sometimes.

Even if you're purely looking at specs, which shouldn't be the only factor in valuing a new product on the console market anyway, PS4 and One for example were nicely specced for consoles, but miles away from PC even at launch. So what justified their launch price versus Switch?

And after the presentation, regarding all the tech they stuffed into a those controllers and looking at the mobile form factor, as a everyday-joe-consumer i could see, where that price would be justified.

The PS4 was $400 three and a half years ago, and is still significantly more powerful than the Switch.

It had plenty of new or different tech that the Switch doesn't have, beyond JUST the GPU/CPU/8GBGDDR5 - blu ray drive, 500gb hdd, touchpad and lightbar on controller, etc.

People pay more because they can have a system that affords them the capability to enjoy a game that just "wasn't do-able" on older hardware. The Switch is barely more powerful than the system its replacing, which was already under powered.

I'm paying a premium to ... what... play the exact same games?

yeah, yeah... I can play on the Go! But it has 2.5 hours of battery life - which makes it kind of pointless.

PS4 had a decent price for its specs.
Switch has a terrible price for its specs.

This is not hard to understand or a double standard.

Too early to say if it will be one or not honestly.

Where the Wii U had clear issues (marketing, lack of power, hard to develop for, clunky interface when you first set it up, etc) the Switch really looks to be Nintendo's answer to everything. You can have motion controlled games like the Wii but just slide those Joy-Cons into a grip and bam, traditional controlling game.

The high price is likely because the Joy Cons have a lot of stuff in them (HD Rumble, Motion controls, IR Pointer, Wrist-Strap) which inflates the price at least 20-30$ (considering they are almost 80$, they are quite pricey). I don't know if third parties will support the things before ditching it, but at the very least it will be getting early support.

I look at it this way; The Switch already appeals to me way more than the Wii U did, so all Nintendo has to do is ensure a steady stream of games releases for the platform from day-zero to Mario Odyssey's release and they will prove to me they will NOT have software droughts.

JP studios and indies are on board, so that alone means it will have a decent line for a portable. But as a console? You need those western third parties and outside of Ubisoft and Activison, I don't expect EA and Bethesda to stick around outside of their promised ports.

Nintendo dug a very big hole over the years and they have to claw their way out. The Switch is them almost seeing the light but still digging out of that hole. So while issues of the Wii U might creep up again (lack of third party support, lack of power), the device will be more successful as Nintendo is trying.

I think it still has a good chance of success. The concept is still cool, and despite the complaints the first 9 months of games actually is pretty good compared to the last few consoles releases we've seen from them (and Sony and MS as well).

There are a couple big stumbling blocks that I can see. First, the price isn't too bad when you approach it as a console, but as a handheld it's priced very high, especially for the kid market that the 3DS occupies currently. And the cost of extra controllers seems really steep as well. That being said if Nintendo can drop the price to $199 or lower in the first year or two I think they will end up being alright in the long run.

Second, they need third parties. Getting Minecraft, FIFA, and Skyrim is a good start, but they really need to keep going from there. I don't think Switch needs to get every third party game to be successful, but it does need to get those top tier AAA games like CoD and Madden. Nintendo needs to do whatever it takes to make sure those big AAA sellers are coming out on their platform as well.

So if Nintendo can overcome those I think it has a good shot. I have a feeling its going to make a killing in Japan no matter what, and NA will be a struggle but I'm sure they can carve out a solid niche if they play their cards right. So overall I'm optimistic for them.

Out of the gate, I see it doing better than the Wii U. Long term it's hard to guess, but once they really consolidate their handheld and console development under one screen, I'm expecting a lot more going forward.

This is pretty much where I stand.

I think it's going to depend a lot on how cool the public thinks the concept is of a hybrid console. A lot of people seem to love the concept, but overall as of now it's a question mark.

The price could be a stumbling block if the public sees this primarily as a portable, since it's even more expensive than Vita was, but hopefully Nintendo can get across effectively that it's also a good home console.

I hope it will be successful. I really do. It's the most excited I've been for a Nintendo console in ages and really has everything I would want from a video game system.

With that said, I'm just not sure people care about dedicated video game systems that aren't viewed as "high-end" anymore.

Assuming they ramp down 3DS development and focus all of their resources on the Switch, I imagine it will do at least 30 ~ 40 million units globally by the end of its life. There has to be that many people out there interested in playing Nintendo games.

We'll see, though! I hope it really takes off.

Zelda @ launch
Mario Kart @ launch
Mario within the first month/ 5 weeks
Metroid/F-Zero/some abandoned IP in "summer"
Pokemon "Stars" for Holiday 2017

Sprinkle in one 3rd-party surprise. Assassin's Creed Collection. Dark Souls Collection. Exclusive Sonic game. Call of Duty. Just one.

That's IT. That's literally all it would take for the entire atmosphere to be flipped upside down and all of GAF would be blown away by such a great conference. Would have been an awesome release schedule. Start off with an amazing bang that is Zelda and Mario Kart to show off the on-the-go multiplayer.

Mario hits hard for spring and E3.

Metroid or some other "core" game keeps people interested in the summer.

Nobody can say no to a new, exclusive pokkemon in the holiday season - sells like gangbusters, especially as a pack-in.

Boom! Nintendo just blew everyone away.

And what sucks - is the list isn't that crazy. They've had years to tee something like that up.

Truth is, they were clearly not working on anything during that huge glut of time where nothing released on the Wii-U. I think we all thought that they were just building this amazing catalogue of games for the Switch, but that just wasn't the case. They were sitting on their hands.

They should have come out of the gate swinging, instead they only sorta came out of the gate at all, their sleeve appears to be caught on the hinge of the gate...

I love Nintendo but $300 for an underpowered console (& 32 GB HD?!), paid online service, $80 for the Joy-Con controllers, and $70 for the pro controllers? Ehhhhhhh... I got a bad feeling about this. I certainly won't be buying the Switch anytime soon, if at all.

Well they could have been kinda generous to include either Arms or 2 1 game to make sure you get the extra set of joy cons but nope. Just stupid and reactive type of planning going on here.

I mean, just... what happened with Nintendo's executive culture? I've been assuming for four years that they were humble and in freak-out mode and realized in retrospect how massively they'd fucked up, and they were asking themselves questions like "How did we produce so much hardware and software that's totally unappealing? What can we do to apologize to our fans and make it up to them? How can we completely change and update our whole way of thinking to match the needs and desires of 2017 gamers? How can we use our war chest to deliver a huge amount of appealing software cheap and win back market share?"

But everything about yesterday suggests that they learned absolutely none of those lessons. It suggests that they have an insular executive culture of back-patting and mutual reinforcement, like George Lucas surrounded by his sycophants or something. They seem to really believe that the Wii and DS are the norm and the Wii U the exception, despite all evidence to the contrary. They seem to think their whole way of thinking is fundamentally correct, that their products are just the best, and that the Wii U's failure is... a fluke? Somebody else's fault? Anything but a sign that their entire approach to video games is fundamentally broken.

How else do you explain a $300 handheld right after their $250 handheld and $300 console had trouble selling? How else do you explain the online play subscription fee with absolute garbage value-added? How else do you explain $70 and $110 controllers? How else do you explain 1,2,Switch with its hilariously dreadful minigames, a collection that to all appearances makes Nintendo Land look like the game of the century? I mean, pretending to milk a cow? Counting balls? For $50? Are you fucking kidding me? Is this a joke? This is what Nintendo thinks is the new Wii, the new mass-market killer? A bunch of corporate icebreakers that make the average VR shovelware look like a masterpiece?

How did Nintendo's decision-makers get this bad? How could they possibly be so insulated from the real world to be this delusional?

Thank you for this post. I had this bottled up inside as well, but couldnt articulate it as well as you did.

The first two years (this year and next) will be mostly console
Next year and the years after is when this system will get the full slate of 3DS-level development.

Once that happens, this baby will really take off.

Does PS4/XBO have HD Rumble?
Are they portable at this level of technology?

There is more to tech than polygons, framerates and video output.
Do you really think the average schmuck on the street is going to see something like HD Rumble as a selling point? And that developers are even really going to support it?

You need compelling games to sell your hardware, and Zelda isn't enough to tide over any kind of momentum over months. It's crazy that we waited so long for this.

It's a pretty impressive launch year, don't you think? If we look at the XB1 and PS4 launch years I don't think you can point out very many compelling experiences. PS4 in particular had a really abysmal launch year, XB1 had a decent one but I don't think either of them compete with the first 9 months of the Switch as far as exclusive titles are concerned. When's the last time we had a Zelda, Mario and Mario Kart for a new system in the first nine months? However, this isn't the PS4/XB1 launch year, so I do think Nintendo have to step it up quickly since their competition is hitting their strides, but just wanted to bring up launch year woes to the discussion.

The chief concern is really the concern surrounding Nintendo for a while and that's third party, specifically western third party commitment. I think having FIFA and NBA there is a nice touch, and I know some fans that would love the experience of it on the go, but whether that'll be a gangbusters deal is yet to be seen. Some core people might not care as much because of muh realism, but the prospect of FIFA/NBA on the go might invigorate others.

I think the big complaint is that Nintendo didn't show enough for further in the future. To me, it's a tough call. You have Sony and MS announcing titles years in advance (Wasn't Deep Down shown at the PS4 reveal?) for no particular reason other than hypeintensifing.gif. I like the approach of Nintendo that mostly shows games that are more or less on the horizon. No More Heroes was the only title shown that doesn't have release date, right? Was late for me, so I can't remember if there were others. I can see why this would deflate some people though, but it's not really Nintendo's fault, it's more because that's the culture we gamers have grown accustom to. You could argue that Nintendo should adapt and do the same, but I think some people like the announce and play it soon approach that they take, but it obviously leaves room for disappointment when Retro doesn't show up again and the like, but leave a few exceptions they're really modest with their showings versus the other two hardware manufactures are predominantly looking further into the future, especially early on. So it's a hard topic, for sure. I think from a marketing perspective it would've been smarter to say, "Hey look, here's Retro, here's this western game, and that! Coming 2019!"

I personally think some of the disappointment comes from the format. I said from the get-go it should've just been a direct. Directs are incredible, controlled and neat; you don't have to worry about translators stumbling over themselves nor stage presenters doing some awkward skit. The suda51 illustration segment is a good example of that. Sony and MS have great marketing/PR people right now and they have really charismatic people up on stage generally. Reggie has a good stage presence, so it's a bit odd to me that he wasn't the one up there honestly, I think a lot of the negativity comes from the presentation itself and not what was actually shown. Think that's solidified by the intense negative reactions at first, but with the treehouse event more people seemed to have come around and aren't completely shitting on the thing.

Another point you could look toward is, I think they may have overextended themselves in the teaser. They showed all the big games in that little teaser, so seeing them on stage wasn't as jaw dropping as it would've otherwise been since the element of surprise wasn't there. People expected Mario since he was there in the teaser, same with Mario Kart and Splatoon, their surprises were all smaller Japanese titles and new IPs. (Which focused on motion in the videos, so it went back on their original message that this was a core gaming machine, honestly they should've shown ARMS with both the joy-con and Pro) Had they of held back on Mario in the teaser, I think it would've made a bigger splash, just as every other Mario game in the first year has.

At the very least, this wasn't a XB1 reveal level disaster. (Even though XB1 reveal had some good games as well, but the messaging again fucked the entire presentation).

What does everyone think?

- Worst launch lineup I can ever remember
- Absurd price for console, completely unacceptable prices for controllers
- Underpowered hardware
- Pay to play online and chat that seemingly requires a separate phone app

Not even GAF is hyped by this shit, so the real world is going to just keep on doing other stuff. I was hoping to give Nintendo another chance, but THIS shit is a fucking embarrassment. $80 for a pro controller is straight up theft, especially when all the games you would play with it can be played on other consoles for cheaper.

PS4 had a decent price for its specs.
Switch has a terrible price for its specs.

This is not hard to understand or a double standard.

Why are people having issues understanding this? Not to mention Nintendos crazy accessories prices, lacking online features and third party support.

No, I dont think its portable enough to be big in Japan, and that in the West the competition of the other consoles, especially the PS4, is too strong.

I do think itll do better then Wii U though.

This shit gonna bomb so hard, only hope is that they can get the price down and flex that Pokémon brand hardcore. Like stars better wow the shit outta people this holiday season. Where the fuck do they get off with charging $70 for a pro controller though and Nintendo must be outta their mind charging for online. What are people even gonna play online? Mario kart?

Yeah, eventually. I don't think it's going to be an immediate hit, though. I see it having a slow build like the 3DS

I think this is a plausible scenario. Because I can't see it being wildly successful this year, but maybe once they lower the price and either renege or revamp that paid online nonsense, then we'll see where it goes.

You're right.

Like: Blu-Ray, a big 500GB, replaceable hdd, a touchpad on your controller, a lightbar on a controller, vita remote play, an established online network system, and netflix/hulu/amazon ready pretty much out of the gate.

This thread is proof positive that Nintendo can still PT Barnum people with marketing buzzwords. How are people still being bamboozled into buying this marketing bullshit? Or do they know they're getting played and just don't care? Man, I feel like Detective Thorn in Soylent Green.

Edit: By the by, in case people have forgotten, the Dualshock 4 has a built in speaker, gyro, and rumble soooooooo a game like "1,2, Switch" could easily be made for it maybe not even need the lightbar.

The value just isn't there when it needs to be, considering the lack of games, 3rd party, and the fact that you can buy another console around the same price. I think it will be similar to the Wii U, albeit better selling, but still a dud in the end. This thing just has so much going against it right out of the gate.

I don't think it's going to work out, but I wish them luck. I hope they get it together.

Here's the thing:
* If it sells a lot day 1 at 300$US, we won't see a price drop and it'll hurt the console release in the long run.
* If it doesn't sell a lot day 1, there's a chance of Nintendo pulling a 3DS and savagely cut the price, saving the hybrid from a Wii U fate. (probably)

Of course, there's still the chance they'll ride it out like they did for the Wii U. If that happens, it'll just hurt their image even more and better give incensitive for people to fork over 300$US for the hybrid alone.

Needless to say, I won't be there day 1 for multiple reasons.

Hell to the no.
Nintendo legit dug their own grave with that stupid price announcement and lackluster launch lineup other than Zelda. These fools priced the damn console $100-150 above what it should've been priced. Damn you, Nintendo. You still haven't learned jack shit.

Honestly it needs to be successful for Nintendo's sake.

They can't have another Wii U.

So I would bet that in the end it'll do a tad better than Wii U but it will take time.

The costs are crazy when you add things for the system right now.

I think it will do fairly well in Japan. I can't really tell about the West. If it was priced a bit more competitively and had more Nintendo software (I expected more first-party games now that they've consolidated) then it would have a better chance.

Get in now for that Ambassador certificate when they drop the price in a few months. There are still 10 Gameboy Advance games you can only have if you have that ambassador title.

GAF at times is so unbearable when it comes to being hyper negative.

Yes, I think it will be a success.

Price complaints are funny to me after this holiday season where my daughter was making a Xmas list with 100-150 toy dogs/cats, a LEGO set I got her was around 100, and a small tricycle she wanted was 150. So many people want stuff cheaper than I could ever imagine it being.

Do you honestly not see the reasons for the negativity?

Why do you think it'll be a success? By success, do you mean 'not lose money' or even make a profit? By success, do you mean pull more of the market back to Nintendo's favor? I'd be interested in your more detailed opinion on this.

You also don't see why people are complaining about a $300 system that is less powerful than systems that have been on the market for over 3 years (that also have a ridiculously deep library of games available)? You don't understand people complaining about expensive peripherals, additional (and dare I say necessary) storage needs due to the hardware's low internal storage, and being charged for online when Nintendo hasn't even proven they can handle an involving online infrastructure?
What does that have to do with your daughter's Christmas list? Did you (or Santa) get her all of that stuff? Does everyone here have the same disposable income that you do? Not sure why you even brought that up.

People expect a price for a perceived value. As of right now, for many people, the value for that price is not there. Not hard to figure out and to be dismissive and toss it aside as 'GAF negativity' is unfortunate.

I hope it succeeds. I know the launch lineup looks weak from our point of view but I'm assuming Nintendo doesn't want to hurt Zelda's sales and from the looks of it, it could be a GOAT contender gamer. I live in Canada and with the exchange rate, we get fucked over with a 399$CAN price tag. But 1-2 Switch looks like a VERY GOOD idea and I'm sure it will sell wonders. Arms looked quite interesting and while we have barely seen anything from 3rd parties, the games presented were quite exciting.

I know people are going mad over the fact that it's not going to be as powerful as the X1/PS4 and I can understand the anger factoring the price point but its not like people are so hung up on specs when they already have an above-mentioned console or a PC. We buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games....who the hell would buy a Nintendo Console for GTA?

Honestly? At first I thought it would perform very well, but after yesterday's presentation I am skeptical at best. It'll do better than the Wii U for whatever that's worth.
