And when is this game coming?

It'll ship after the new Metroid.

A unified ecosystem was a neat idea. A unified console isn't. I'd never take this thing outside of its dock more than once a year, tops.

I agree and don't really see people embracing the Switch as a portable system. I can't imagine bringing a screen the size of the Wii U pad out and about. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo launched another handheld in a couple years.

For me they missed the mark completely. Havent owned a nintendo console since gamecube, and I thought switch looked amazing. I was ready to preorder yesterday, but then the conference showed an emphasis on waggle and games that are a long ways off. Hype deflated entirely. 1 2 switch for 50 dollars? Arms? Enhanced rumble waggle controls? Yeah no thanks.

I was SO DOWN for the switch based on concept alone. My commute to work is only 1 hour each way so battery wasnt a huge issue. I was ready and on board.

BUt for $470AUD they can get fucked. I still cant believe the horrible mistakes made with this console after the Wii U was such a disaster.

I am still going to buy it eventually since i am totally in love with the concept itself. I am NOT in love with the price of console and accessories and the rest of the other asinine decisions made (paid to play online with laughable benefits to doing so, paid app chat on a mobile phone WTF, AWFUL *home console* specs, pathetic game lineup so far)
3DS also had a bigger draught and a even more horrible launch lineup. Guys seriously it had nintendogs, pilot wings and steeldiver. Switch has Zelda
And when is this game coming?
my prediction is that we will hear about it pretty soon. The third versions tend to come out a year or a half after the original release

This is just a Wii U fiasco all over again. Major lack of any 3rd party titles so there will be huge droughts between 1st party titles.

I was looking for any reason to to justify a Switch, I found half of a compelling one (game lineup) but it's spread over an entire year...and potentially longer.

switch is gonna be huge. new Zelda and Mario the first year. plus it seems like they gonna focus all their efforts on here rather than console + handheld.

then once Nintendo Theme Park hits, and later the Mario cgi movie, it's gonna be golden years.

they have the IPs, they have the history, they aren't afraid of the casual market, they gonna be just fine.

If you don't see the Switch as a clearly huge upgrade to the PS3/360 I don't know what to tell you. Maybe watch the presentation again.

Watching that presentation once was enough for me.

Let's be honest here, the standout game for Switch (Zelda) is launching on the very same day for Wii U. There's a Mario Kart 8 port and a Splatoon sequel coming later that looks largely the same as the original. Third party wise it's getting a last-gen FIFA port and last-gen Skyrim port from six years ago.

It is an upgrade but not a "clearly huge" one, at least from what has been shown so far. These games might have better textures or run at a higher framerate when docked, but they are largely the same experiences people could've already had for the past decade on other systems - the Switch is not bringing in some huge untapped market. It's essentially a beefed up Wii U with true portability instead of just Off-TV Play.

Just compare US sales to European sales, PS3 vs Xbox 360, Sony did take the right steps to salvage their console, but it was mainly due to PS brand power in Europe (combined with lack of Xbox one) that they were truly able to finish the generation "even". Hell, you don't need to go farther than Neogaf where the majority of users are North American and felt that the 360 had completely annihilated the PS3 when the numbers tell a far different
Conversely you can say that the Xbox brand power prevented the Xbox from being completely anhihilated in the US, whether in the rest of the world the X1 felts even more like a non presence than the 360 ever did.

Nintendo does have this kind of power in the handheld side, it'll be interesting to see if the Switch carries it (it's not looking good)

Problem with the handheld side is that, now more than ever, ipads/iphones/androids have really taken the dedicated VG hardware lunch and it shows. I bought almost all major handhelds up to 3DS and even got a Vita. I have no plans on getting any portable VG hardware that's not ipad/android tablet.

I can seriously hear Reggie reading this post in my head. If you don't write PR for Nintendo you missed your calling, my friend.

It seems that it will almost certainly sell more than Wii U but less than 3DS.

The only question is where along that range it falls. Given the price and the marketing, I'm leaning towards it selling closer to the Wii U than the 3DS.

Overall I definitely see it doing better than the Wii U, question is how much better...

The thing that has really left me scratching my head is the launch and near-launch game lineup....

You would have thought that considering they took so long to announce this thing and basically stopped producing major games for the Wii U a while ago, they would have been preparing for this time and had a MUCH better launch lineup...

The price doesn't bother me much personally but I don't feel compelled to buy the console just for Zelda. Or even Mario Kart.... I can already play these games on Wii U.

It's just not particularly attractive right now and probably won't be for a while.

Of course I will feel obligated to buy it for Pokemon (or Smash 5/MK9) at some point. Just not in the launch window.

Wait for TGS.

Probably seperate direct like with XY and Sun Moon

Question is will it do as well as 3DS I think (I think it will especially with revisions)

Whats going to happen if this thing bombs And does wiiu numbers?

Whats going to happen to the handheld market? It seems like a huge hit for handheld gaming

And Despite phones, nintendo filled a big void with the 3ds

All of the "lmao" responses to people voicing their disappointment and lack of faith in any sort of 3rd party support remind me of wii u threads in 2013.

Mario looks cool, but it's almost a year away.

Zelda looka great, but I'll just borrow my buddie's wii u to play it.

Every other game announced for this year? "Oh"

The more I see this system, the more I feel like its the Wii U 2. That's fine for people who don't have a Wii U, they could get this and enjoy the games they missed out on, but as someone who has a Wii U already, many of the games aren't games I'd drop $450 on a console to play. Specifically Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tells me I own like 80% of the game already on the Wii U. I have yet to get Splatoon, so I could just get that on the Wii U. Mario despite some cool levels, looks essentially like Mario. Zelda looks amazing, but if the Wii U version isn't cancelled I'll just get that. The only game I'm interested in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 because that legit looks like a completely new game.

The other thing, as I've said all along is that I really feel Nintendo botched the design of the system. It should have been more like a Vita with a dock, than a Wii U with detachable controllers and a dock. Though it looks much smaller than a Wii U tablet, it still doesn't look very portable to me. The resolution should have been a little lower 540p than 720p. That'd help with battery life and performance on the go. A Vita screen is still shockingly good in 2017 and would be a huge step up from the 3DS. Output to a TV would then just be upscaled to 720p or 1080p depending on the game.

I think the real question here is: how long do I have to wait to buy the next Mario game on my playstation?

Well, the Dreamcast launched in 1998 in Japan, a couple months latter Sonic Adventure was released, after that it took 2 and a half years until Sega decided to kill the console and leave the hardware industry

Since the Switch has Mario Adventure I'm betting that by 2020 Nintendo will appear on E3 announcing their first PS exclusive, MS also announces a deal to bring a Nintendo exclusive to Xbox Zero but the game is cancelled in 2023

I see it going the way of the Wii U, maybe slightly between that and the Gamecube.

It's a 300 underpowered console that can't compete with a ps4/xbox.

As a handheld that market is just absolutely destroyed by mobile these days in terms of sales/revenue.

Then on top of this they priced their accessories like the controllers and things so high that it is absurd for people who would want to buy one and like 4 controllers to have when friends come over.

The lineup seems abysmal aside from Zelda and the new Mario which both look like great fun, but then what?

Nintendo seems like they just don't get the console market anymore, and if this tanks like the Wii U I definitely can see them going the way of Sega in terms of getting out of the hardware and going toward their first party titles on xbox/playstatoin/pc instead.

I started the stream last night incredibly optimistic and excited. This was finally going to be the time they got it right. By the end of the night, that optimism and excitement was completely crushed. It was embarrassing. I think this is going to be a failure overall, but still sell slightly better than the Wii U. It isn't going to come anywhere near the Wii.

It will do at least three times better than the Wii U.

3-6 hour depending on game* and I'm sure the Switch will act as a Pokestop or Gym rather than to catch Pokémon.

Neither does a 3DS XL

As somebody that plays Pokémon Go this post proves to me that you are literally throwing crap at a wall to see what sticks. The Switch will not act as a Pokestop or a Gym, that is absolutely embarrassingly idiotic.

Like, I hope I don't get banned for this because I try to be fairly respectful but this level of ridiculous fanboy fantasy to justify hyperbolic expectations only hurts the conversation because it's so outlandish. It's like a car crash - people can't help but reply to the insanity they are reading.

FAKE EDIT: I totally engaged in reasonable discussion before this reply, so mods be kind please.

I think once the unification of the handheld and home game markets is realized and people understand that Pokémon, Smash, Splatoon, MARIO, Zelda, and the great niche 3DS library sequels are all going to be on one platform that it will sell well. It's not going to be "competing" against 3DS like WiiU did.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
To really go in on this topic, I feel Nintendo are looking at an upper bound of 35-40 million on this device if they suddenly start doing everything right -- that means revisions, price drops, software momentum. That last night was a fumble, and everything is in place to really make this final play at hardware a good shake.

If however they maintain a course of wilful ignorance and it bungles to 25 million (less feels impossible simply considering Monster Hunter, Pokemon), bearing in mind this now represents the joint force of their handheld and console numbers, investors would be screaming at them to leave hardware.

Basically I certainly don't see it really coming close to 3DS numbers.

I have to agree with the many here. The Switch is much to highly priced, the fact that they have paid online multiplayer and the fact that its just a successor to the 3DS and much to weak in processing power.. Regardless of what they want to try and tell people, this is a handheld in every single regard. Giving you a dock that has TV out does not make it a console, sorry.

The price for everything is just way too high. The value is just much too low.

I'm not gonna lie. That milking game is fucking awesome. That's probably the most wacky-Japanese-video-game-ass-thing that's ever existed. All it needs is to pull out and show that you're actually milking the teats of a giant octopus with a man's face or something to be perfect.

Agreed. A cross gen zelda, some borderline shovelware and the promise of Mario a year from now has zero chance of taking the gaming world by storm.

I see the lower limit of the Switch being Gamecube levels. I see the upper limits being 3DS levels. I can realistically see it being treated as a successor to the 3DS which will help sales and game output in Japan primarily but the rest of the world as well.

Voted Wii U tier simply because I didn't find an option for between Wii U and Game Cube. The Game Cube was already better than the Wii U, but I don't see this being even Game Cube level in terms of sales. Maybe around Christmas 2017 Nintendo will have adjusted some things to make it more appealing if enough developers are still on board to even make it worthwhile.

This just looks wrong on so many levels. Or right I guess, depending on what you're currently in the mood for...

1 2 switch is awful.

Everything else I've seen looks great.

There's a sparce line up at the moment. hopefuly further announcements will flesh it out. Expecting a few more games announced at e3 for this year too.

Hopefully some 3rd party presence. Will try my best to support good 3rd party efforts on the switch (fuck FIFA if it's a last gen port).

I mean you're describing Wii..

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Wii Play/Wii Sports
Super Mario Galaxy

Not that I disagree but it's an amusing parallel.

No, it will not be a success. As for sales numbers... I think it may sell more than the Wii U, but will fail to reach the 3DS's lifetime sales.

I don't think anything could be as bad as the wii u after suffering all those years. They had to learn something from that mistake.

So I preordered a switch first thing this morning. And then throughout the course of the day thought about whether or not I really wanted to spend that much money on this thing right now. I have a Wii U so I can still play the only game coming out for the foreseeable future that even remotely interests me. MARIO kart and splatoon are fine for a lot of people but I already have Wii U versions of those and honestly never play them. I rewatched some of the stuff from last night and really think this has 2012 written all over it again. Yes the device looks sleek and fun and cool but Nintendo is saying the exact same things they were back then and it feels like they are repeating everything they've done wrong in the past. I hope the switch is a resounding success for Nintendo but as it stands right now I am going to hold off. The switch is screaming price drop to me much like the 3ds. I'll check back in when MARIO drops and I can get a pro controller for $30.

It is too expensive by $50, and they should have bundled 1 2 Switch. The buzz would have been much more positive today. The $299 price begs for it to be compared with PS4 Slim and Xbox One S which can be had cheaper, and bundled with a game. Regardless, I don't think it will hold it back too much, and if it does, there will be price cuts and bundles that can help it bounce back by the time the the holiday season arrives.

The bigger disappointment is the day 1 launch titles. Nintendo keeps saying they have learned from previous bad launch line ups, but yet again have been unable to act on it. I can imagine a big lull in sales between launch month, and "phase 2" of the release, which will come when you get a second round of big releases, like Mario, or when a price cut/bundle happens. So looks too much like the 3DS launch, but like 3DS, it can recover.

It'll be a modest success, I think. It'll definitely get that portable-gaming Japanese demographic, but whether it succeeds in America is up for grabs in my eyes. I don't think it's gonna be a smash hit, but I also don't think that it's gonna do Wii U numbers either. I think that it'll do a bit better than Gamecube, possibly doing well enough to have multiple models that push its success forward.

If this is truly the successor of the 3DS (which in turn, would mean that it would get all the sequels that would be expected out of Nintendo's next handheld-- i.e. a new Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter etc.), then yes, the Switch would definitely do better than the Wii U. It'll probably do whatever numbers the 3DS is doing.
