Switch is my first 'at launch' console since the PS2

I bought the N64, Dreamcast, Gameboy Advance, GameCube, PSP, Wii, and Vita at launch. There's something special about the first month or two a system is out that I don't feel if I buy it later. It's exciting, even if your game options are limited.

Was super pumped about getting at midnight, planned on playing it in bed for a couple hours (zelda), then with my gf the next day (snipperclips), and take it to my family dinner the day after that for some 1,2 switch fun.

BUT.

Every year a group of us guys bunch up and take a road trip to Columbus for the Arnold Sports Festival (bodybuilding and sports Expo). We leave the Thurday before the show starts ad come home Sunday afternoon (about a 4 hour drive)...

We leave March 2nd -_-

My girl will pick up the system for me Friday along with Zelda, which she got me for my birthday, 1,2 Switch should be in the mail via best buy (birthday gift from family member) along with Bomberman via Amazon on Friday...

So at least Sunday will feel like Christmas when i get home...

Anyone else planning on getting Hollow Knight whenever it gets released?

Absolutely, but I'm concerned about how little we've heard about the Switch version.

They used to say "not long after the platform launch" but lately they've been saying "later in the year."

I want to play this portable to bring back the Castlevania DS memories but I don't want to wait too long.

At launch? No, not really.

I didn't own a DS so I had a shitload to play on my 3DS at launch.

And Wii U had NSMBU and Zombi U. Zombi U specifically was so god damn fun and terrifying. But BotW easily, EASILY beats the entire lot of Wii U's launch.

1, 2, Switch is just icing on the cake. I'll also be downloading Binding of Isaac and Shovel Knight, so I think I'll be set for a long time, at least until ARMS drops.

You put a Xeno game or an SMT game anywhere on that lineup list, no matter how far out, and I will throw money at whatever console it is.

Though personally, I usually buy all systems and games Day One because I'm an idiot and like spending money.

At launch? No, not really.

My point is you still got the system anyway and didn't really save much if you had waited. Heck the Wii U didn't really even have a price drop so you would have paid pretty much the same on that system except would have had it for less time. What do you really get by waiting?

My manager at work approved my day off for the 3rd. 3 days off and I am so ready!

What I love is that I'll be able lose myself in the world of Hyrule on the couch, at my desk, on the tv, or my bed.

I bought every Nintendo system at launch since the GameCube. Only non Nintendo system I bought at launch was a PS4 and I regretted it because I bought it due to all the awesome JRPGs that were announced, only one of which actually released already, another is constantly delayed, and the last is mia. The ironic thing is i mostly play on Xbox now and got FF15 for that...

It'll probably release at the same time as the inevitable PS4 version.

Well I saved money on both 3DS and Wii U so to me it was worth waiting, plus I had something that I actually wanted to play. I see no point in buying a console just to have it early.

This will be my second, I brought the 3DS at launch to replace my DSlite.

At first I pre-ordered the Switch with the mindset that I will cancel it later down the line but after realising that I will end up buying Sonic Mania, Sonic 2017, Breath of the Wild, Arms, Splatoon 2, maybe Skyrim, maybe Mario Kart Deluxe, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Super Bomberman R and Fire Emblem Warriors I just ended up canceling my Wii U order of Breath of the Wild.

I'll receive it a few days later but will happily read people's stories on Gaf in the meanwhile

Damn for a second I thought VF4EVO was announced for the Switch when I saw this thread.

I haven't purchased a console at launch in 20 years because it's better to wait, but I'm in there at launch for the Switch. The Switch has what I'm looking for in a Nintendo handheld, and I love Nintendo's first party output, so I wanted to be there at launch and feel that excitement of having a brand new console.

Nintendo could screw this up in 100 different ways, and they've screwed up with the lack of information, but everyone that I've seen who has played the Switch loves it. Plus it has Zelda, Mariokart, and PuyoPuyoTetris that I'm really looking forward to playing. I don't trust Bomberman but the artwork looks amazing.

I purchased a Wii U late when Super Mario Maker came out and I've played it more than the PS4 I bought a month before it, so I know I'll enjoy the Switch. I also don't see Nintendo screwing up the Switch as badly as the Wii U, so I'm optimistic in jumping in now.

Well I saved money on both 3DS and Wii U so to me it was worth waiting, plus I had something that I actually wanted to play.

But how much did you save over what period of time and then create a backlog in the process? Is it worth saving $50 by waiting 2 years? That's $2 a month. I'd rather pay the $2 a month and play the games as they come out rather than miss something or create a big backlog. And I get 2 years of extra enjoyment out of it.

My first since the Dreamcast. I wish I was excited but between the short life of the Wii U and the lack of compelling launch window titles it feels like a utility purchase.

Zelda will be great, I'm sure.

I waited almost 2 years to get Wii U, but I will get Switch at lauch because it very important for me to be able to play the new Zelda in the best possible way. Refuse to accept poorer viuals and constant framedrops which have been reported of the Wii U version.

This has probably been said already, but I find there are two ways to look at day one purchases: investment for future opportunity or obsessive compulsion for something in particular.

My PS3 and PS4 were both the former. My Dreamcast was for the latter. The Switch is both for me.

If you do it for any other reason, buyer's remorse is right around the corner.

Buying things is fun, new technology is exciting.

I canceled my Switch order a couple of days ago because the only reason I wanted one was exactly because it was new tech - but not because I looked forward to the software. In fact, the games announced for the Switch were the big turn off.If I wanted to play the new Zelda I could get it for my Wii U instead and that was one of my Nintendo consoles that I hardly ever turned on. The only Nintendo game I absolutely loved was Xenoblade, a game I started and finished on my PC using an emulator.

The Switch is not for me. I won't ever use it out and about, I only play games at home on my big screen HDTV. It has tons of functionality I don't care for (HD Rumble), it's underpowered, it won't have enough software I'd like to play, etc etc. It will just be a $300 paperweight,so why keep the pre-order?

Why do you feel the post so much about a product you're so uninterested in? It's not like you're doing anyone a favour or presenting a new perspective.

Many people both 1) want to play BotW at launch and 2) find the Switch's hardware to be compelling. That says nothing about games coming in the future. It's not that hard to imagine why someone would want it even if you don't.

I saved enough to buy the games that I wanted at the time. As I said before, I see no point in getting a console early just for the sake of having it early.

Many are buying it because of Zelda and that's fine, but I don't care about it nor the rest of the launch lineup.

The money is not an issue. Doesn't seem like it takes up much space either - why cancel?
let's see

- revision A design and QC issues
- initial high price and lack of games
- beta online experience
- could end up a total flop
- no idea if any launch games are worth buying

those are the obvious ones

First since Wii for me.

Off the top of my head I think N64, GameCube, DS, Wii and Switch are the only things I've gotten at launch.

Makes me sound like fanboy--and I pretty much was from NES to N64. But Nintendo has been secondary for me from PS2 on really (even though I started with GC). Nintendo is just better about having a personal must play at launch for me still, where as Sony and MS have typically not had anything that made me willing to shell out day one vs waiting for more games and/or a price drop/good bundle.

At launch? No, not really.
Wii U had a great launch. New Super Mario Bros U, Nintendo Land and Zombi U are some of the best games in the library and then there's some great ports like Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Batman Arkham City (late port but my favourite version of the game). It isn't one of the best launches of all time but it's better than most.

Agreed. I regretted my Wii U but the best games were heavily skewed towards launch.

The Wii U's OS was barely functional at launch. It took them months to fix it.

So what? What does spending $300 now versus $300 a year or two later mean in the bigger picture other than you missed out on two years of usage. If I'm going to buy the system anyway, I might as well get more usage out of it.

I was there for the launch of...

Snes
N64
Sega CD
Sega Saturn
Sega dreamcast
Gba
DS
GameCube
Wii
Wii U
PS4
Vita
And now Switch.

Additionally I've owned:

Nes
Game boy
Game boy color
Gamegear
3ds
Sega master system
Turbo grafx 16
PSX
Ps2
PS3
Xbox 360
Xbox one

You get to miss the section of time where it's a bad experience to use?
Quality over quantity is a thing.

You're talking about buying a console by Nintendo, masters of the software drought.

I buy all consoles at launch. Don't give a shit about sending a message with my wallet. I like new electronics.

Now I'm $674 deep in Switch spending that will probably jump another $100 for amiibos and Nintendo space bucks for online purchases.

I wanted a GamePad that actually is portable and non-offensive to look it. I like the idea of the JoyCon(Gyro, Rumble, 2 player control schemes on the go etc) , I like the indies that have been announced and I think the launch year is stronger than 3DS/Wii U launch years combined.
So to me it's a question do I think it will get discounted before Splatoon 2 and frankly I don't think that's going to happen. So to me as a person who is definitely buying a Switch for Splatoon it's a matter of whether I think the device is worth it at launch. Mainly due to the tech, Zelda and a few indies I do believe it's a device that would be interest especially due to its LAN on the go capabilities.

It would have been my first console at launch, of the stock wasn't so terrible.

I was unable to get a pre order in, and have no idea if stores will have a few extra units to sell to non pre orders. On launch day I saw a couple of Sony VR on the shelves, but to this day have not seen them in stock physically. Hell best buy is still sold out of the non bundle one.

Don't think there will be much of a price drop, and probably no deluxe edition down the road. Just hope I don't have to wait months for the console to be stocked fairly decently.

But buying it at launch means I get to play it for some duration for that period of time versus not playing it at all. So I don't see how dropping $300 now versus dropping $300 later and missing all that play time when I'm spending roughly the same amount of money. On top of that, I don't build a backlog because I'm playing as they're released. So how is not playing anything a benefit?

i always buy launch, it's worth it to me.
there won't be a revision that soon and the price difference will be minimal anyway when you wait a year or so.

So what? What does spending $300 now versus $300 a year or two later mean in the bigger picture other than you missed out on two years of usage. If I'm going to buy the system anyway, I might as well get more usage out of it.

yeah this.

You are buying a console that has three games worth playing this year at best, Zelda, Splatoon 2 and Mario in the fall. If you aren't frothing at the mouth for Zelda the Switch is probably the best console in recent history to wait to buy. Lack of games and overpriced means that in 12 - 18 months it will probably get a price drop and finally have enough games to be worth buying. Just flip your preorder and be patient.
