How is XV not colorful/fanatastical? Also Midgar shouldn't be either of those.
I've got a bad feeling we won't be able to fly around the entire world map
Will happily be proven wrong.
The dithering on the Guard Scorpion pic is pretty intense.

Not saying the game looks bad by any means, but I remember reading somewhere that the stuff they have shown behind closed doors looked amazing graphically. I think it came from famitsu.
FFXIV is pretty fantastical though. And it's a mainline game as you requested. Don't start moving the poles.yeah no. not only is that an MMO but its not much more colourful, everyones still realistically human proportioned. Even the cat race just look like people cosplaying as cats.
I just realized that Cloud's HP/MP is also shown above him
What's the point when we can also see it on the bottom right?
More UI on the screen is never good.
I Think that bar is from the cover
No that is HP/ATB bar. you can see it from here
My guess is they're trying to replicate "heat haze"What is going on with the random splotches of blurriness (like on Cloud's torso)? I'm not familiar with what would be causing this. Does it have to do with the effects used?

its not a mainline game, its an MMO. 11 was also not what I would call a Final Fantasy as it was also an mmo that required a subscription. Using a numbered title is probably more of a marketing tactic. FF9 was really the last time we had, and maybe will have, a truly creative cast of characters that arent mostly just pretty humans, which was a great return to form after FF8.
I wonder what ATB is this time.
Doesn't look like it's related to wait/attack anymore, but some kind of special move?
It's called FF XilI/XIV, can't get more mainline than that? Is DQ X not a mainline DQ game either?Do you really consider an MMO to be at all similar to a single player rpg?
what about its style separates XIV from any other recent Japanese or Korean MMO?

is this battle system a cross of FF12 and 15?
I don't like it =/= it's not a mainline FF
you could give FF Tactics games the numbered title and it would be more convincing. Its more likely to attract sales just like Versus13 becoming FFXV, its not a foreign concept for them to fuck with their games titles, and even after all those years 15 still feels incomplete.
XI and XIV are mainline. Of course they're different to the rest and of course that makes some people skip/attract, but that doesn't change the fact they're part of the mainline run.
It's not like it really matters when each game is fully independent anyway.
Yes, it did.Did it, though?
I don't like it =/= it's not a mainline FF
It's not about liking or disliking the game. It's the simple fact that XI and XIV are MMO's, not single-player RPG. When Blizzard made World of Warcraft, they didn't call it Warcraft 4. When Capcom made Dragon Dogma Online, they didn't call it Dragon's Dogma 2. When Bethesda made Elders Scroll Online, they didn't call it Elders Scroll VI.
And when Hironobu Sakaguchi and Hiromichi Tanaka decided to make FFXI they called it FFXI. It's a mainline FF, deal with it.

If you can show a screenshot why not just show gameplay?
For anyone who can speak Japanese or French, here is video of Nomura's panel discussing FFVIIR (and KH3 at the start, both videos are just labelled KH3 but most of it is FFVIIR talk). I would be interested in any tidbits said that weren't relayed online.

You. I like you.
I've felt this way for a long time. You absolutely can bring a turn-based system to a deep and satisfying tactical level just by utilizing elements from games you already have as a reference. Taking something like Final Fantasy Tactics' systems and bringing them into a more modern state could do a lot of good for the genre as a whole. There have been a few games I've played that have done some interesting things (Breath of Fire V comes to mind) but of the current relevant RPG titles out there I think Final Fantasy would be a fantastic candidate.
A true ARPG system will probably always be my favorite way to digest these things, but genuinely tactical turn-based is a very close second. Especially if, as you suggest, the developers are willing to do interesting things that don't necessarily fall in the "turn-based" (or "action" for that matter) category. I thought XV's wait mode had an immense degree of potential despite the execution, and I think an entire Final Fantasy developed around that concept could be a stunning thing for turn-based combat.

NOMURAAAAAAAA said:Battles will occur directly in the world, which is why theres a cover mechanic. In the screenshot, Cloud has already been discovered by the enemy, but its actually possible to throw a preemptive attack from cover (grenade) to avoid a full blown confrontation.
Grenades are something we had to discuss during meetings. We thought about enabling friendly fire, but ultimately decided against it, because it could make the game too hard for people who arent used or arent fond of FPS.
It is indeed an action game, but it wont be too violent (?) because we dont want people to stop playing. (I dont know if he's talking about on-screen violence or difficulty. Probably the later.)
Heres another screenshot with the Guardian Scorpion. As you can see its quite extravagant. I hope people will have fun with these new battles, which include new options not previously possible, like destructible environments. This screenshot was taken ingame, with everything moving accordingly. I wanted to show a small video but was told it wasnt possible, sorry. Please note that the user interface is not final. Once it will be finalized, I think well be able to show the game running.
Thank you. Now know why he was talking about your grenades not hurting allies. For KH, it's mostly the same information we've been receiving from the event.
For VIIR, Nomura says that since you're supposed to infiltrate the Mako reactor in the mission, it would only make logical sense for the team to make it a stealth mission where you can hide behind cover in the environment. Also, a way you could initiate combat if you want to would be to cover without being detected, throw a grenade to the enemy and create an attack of opportunity, so you're not forced to do stealth if you don't want to.
Other infos are also what we received.
Thanks very much. It's great to have these translations. My modest translation of everything Nomura said about FFVIIR :
