Yikes...

GameStop shares are tanking after Microsoft unveils a new attack on the used game business

Damn, almost 9% today alone.

I would want to sell the fuck out of it this year.

"Buy any Xbox One console and get instant access to over 100 games with a free 3 month trial of Xbox Game Pass starting at $199 this Holiday"

Also this. Think about parents buying consoles for their kids.

I think he's saying if you only want to own games, then this service alone wouldn't be for you... which is a point that goes without saying, because it's a rental service.

He should note, however, that while titles are available in the service they can be purchased at a discount.

I still don't get that, because I myself enjoy owning rather than renting the games. $9.99 to test out >100 games without having to commit to a purchase of any of them I don't like (an option that is nice since there's no refunds on digital purchases with XBL like how Steam does it), plus getting an additional discount if I do find one I want to own is still a valuable proposition to me.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Games with Gold only remain available on 360 and not on One, and it's well established before GWG started that people would pay for the Live subscription because it's the only way to play any game online. Sony has proven that giving out shit cheap games won't stop subscriptions because people are willing to pay since they need online access.

What is the point you are making?

When you download an Xb1 GWG title, you can play it as long as you have a subscription or, should your subscription lapse, anytime you renew.

When you download a title through Xbox game pass, you can play it for as long as it's available on the service.

so the two services offer two different levels of access to the games provided in them.

MS could literally offer a game in both services at the same time, and either one could make more sense to a particular gamer than the other.

It makes 0 sense for MS to short one service In favor of then other. They stand to make the most money by making each service very appealing, and in trying to make them both more appealing than services offered by their competitors.

Those with Gold get 4 games a month (or 48 games a year) that they can play on their Xbox One. These games will always be available as long as you maintain Gold. This along with the Gold discount and online gaming is $5-$6/month or less if you buy an annual subscription.

Just to put the value proposition into perspective. I'd assume the game overlap would be rather large.

How is it "like paying for demos" ?
It's IS renting a large number of full games at once.

1) how many games can you finish in a month? Now How many games can you acquire with $10?

How many games can you finish in year? Now how many can you acquire for $120?

This service isn't expensive when you consider how much you are potentially getting access to. It will live/die the quality and relevance of the offering.

Nevermind that consuming a game is very different from consuming a movie. One doesn't neccisarily "finish" a MP game for example. You can extract value out of experiencing a game w/o seeing it through to completion.

3) the games come from the same pool, but are offered under different circumstances. There's no reason a particular game couldn't be offered on both services, for example. There's no conflict and MS has every reason to want to please people using either or both.

don't mind me if I only see this as a paying demo.

I like EA vault better because games never rotated out.

I buy lots of games during steam sales because I do see great value when games are so heavily discounted ( 80 % ) off !!

If MS has contractual problem with 3rd party publishers, to me it only means the service is not ready.

food for thought : if I pay both XBGL and this rental/ demo thing and gets the same games, I would feel being ripped off by MS, won't you?

not paying this day 1. but lets see how it goes after 3 months, shall we?

Eh, psnow is there so you don't download the game. It's its purpose to stream.

Depending on how many games you play and for how long, doesn't constantly streaming them end up using more bandwidth than if you got to download them? As someone with an ISP datacap I'm already strained with Vue and my normal PC & phone usage with me constantly reaching my cap each month. This Xbox feature honestly sounds much better than PS Now to me. Adding in Original Xbox games would be icing on the cake.

I said it in some other thread that MS has been building up all these features for their platform slowly and they will be able to market these features.

Beam Broadcasting
Groups
Looking For Groups
Arena (this one is gonna be huge imo)
Xbox Game Pass
Xbox Play Anywhere

All within one year of each other. What's the icing on the cake? Scorpio. "Most powerful console ever" - PR Speak. They don't have the number of exclusives that Nintendo and Sony has, so they play to their strengths and that is software features. I think that they will build (slowly) their 1st party output but they are banking on 3rd parties once again. MS is a partner type company so that makes sense. E3 is gonna be interesting.

That's a concern of mine. I'm sure Microsoft understands 90% of subscribers to this new service will more than likely have Gold for the multiplayer aspect alone. Having too many games over lap with GwG with guarantee bad publicity out the gate.

MS really killed it with this. It feels great to pop in some old game I missed and play with increased quality.

They should honestly launch some sort of BC subscription service for access to a large set of BC games for say $20? Sure you would have to fully download the games you want to play but you also bypass all the setbacks of reduced image quality, lag and high bandwidth requirements with a game streaming service.

Also the increased revenue might be a nice carrot to get publishers to approve more games for the feature.

I called this last year. Very smart move.

Psnow can end up with more bandwidth but also keep in mind that user experience depends a lot on “the internet“ with psnow. Spikes in latency or downtime, bad routing, anything can happen that immediately affects playing games there.

They show H5 Guardians in the banner. I didn't know that was a GWG game.

That is going to explode this year. It being baked into Xbox and Windows 10 is brilliant.

Gamestop might be crying.

If Sony and Nintendo join in this would effectively kill off GS. Even if they do not join in, the rapid devaluation of big AAA games has been causing them serious problems with resale and trade in values. They really are up against it.

Your never gonna own these games unless you buy them. It's a rental service. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm just asking how it's "like" paying for a demo, when IS RENTING a FULL GAME, for at least a month. Is renting a car is like going to a dealership for a test drive?

I also see value in heavy discounts, who doesn't? This is not a substitute for discounts on purchases (which xbl also has all the time), It's a rental service- an option for people who want to try a lot of games and doesn't see a need to own them all.

Who said anything about 'contractual problems'? It's licensing agreements, just like you see with every video streaming service. Titles are rotated out when contracts come to an end. Why would MS pay to have a title in forever if it stops driving users to the service?

Why would I feel 'ripped off' if a game is offered in both services? Game pass only let's you play it for a limited time, and it would just be one game out of 100+ also available. GWG let's you play the game as long as you are a subscriber. these overlaps would be temporary, and inconsequential.

It seems like you inaccurately view this as a threat to your ability to own games. Its not. It's an alternative for people who just want to consume a lot of games without spending a lot of money.

Maybe now I can finally play Tales of Vesparia since Soony denied me on the PS3

More like Namco did that.

And next year's the 10th Anniversary of Vesperia, so...maybe they'll "remaster" it like they "remastered" Symphonia.

I can't help but think 'why isn't this on Steam in some form?' in regards to this service

I'm on the alpha and managed to test it.

Very straightforward, you simply download an app and all the games become owned by you. And you can them individually install any of the games.

The store page for this app is a bit different than others, it works as a store within the store with different categories.

And as expected, the games follow the same rules sharing on xbone, your profile can access the games online on any console, and your home console can play these games on any account.

Oh, and the games have achievements.

It is a separate service. It does not require XBL Gold to take advantage of the service or play SP games. You can download instead of streaming the games.

Wait is that confirmed anywhere? I do not need XBox Live in order to sign up for this service?

That makes it a total gamechanger for me alone...

Is there any list of those games available even for alpha owners?
