So my yet to be born little girl may end up disabled in some way (upd: she's okay!)

Thanks, and for the link to Parent GAF - I shall subscribe to the thread. :)

Anytime. It's a great place to share your worries and see how other people are faring in the kid department. We've got a wide range of baby geniuses, power cord eaters, non-sleepers, window lickers, buns in the oven, etc. and some really knowledgeable parents who've been around the block a few times. Hope to see you (and any other parents seeing this) in there~

Yeah, I've been through something similar with my wife and our second child. When they call on the phone and don't really explain things it leaves you wondering and thinking the worst. Just take one day at a time and don't assume the worst. Chances are your baby is just fine. Ours turned out okay, too, after a lot of fear and testing.

I'm sorry to hear this my friend, the uncertainty must be agonising, take things one step at a time, it's inspiring that you're keeping your composure for your wife like that.

To offer some positivity, as far as I know, of fetuses that get infected, 90% will have no abnormalities whatsoever. Don't focus on the 10%, there's a very good chance your baby will be totally fine. I wish the best for you all!

Fingers crossed for you OP, sending you good vibes. I know exactly what you're going through. We got the same call for my oldest daughter at 8 months. First thing they told me was to stay off the internet... I had obviously worked myself into a frenzy with worry. Turned out to be nothing in the end.

What she did turn out to have - for reasons unrelated - is Dyspraxia (which can affect motor coordination and cause sensory issues). It's not anywhere as difficult as a disability like, say, autism, but she's clearly behind the curve on a lot of things that her friends and even her younger brother take for granted, like riding a bike. I will tell you one thing though. I don't think it's possible for me to have loved anyone as much as I love this little girl, Dyspraxia and all. She might be a bit out of sync, but I'm right there with her. Her achievements mean so much more to me because I know how much harder she works on them, which is a very special feeling indeed.

Hold out hope that the next scan comes back as good as it could be, there are plenty of times when tests are wrong or just make things worse than they actually are.
I know someone who was told their child had down syndrome only to find out the test was incorrect

My daughter was positive for every down syndrome test that doctors did during my wife's pregnancy so I can relate, in some small way, to the anxieties that a father can experience around health of their unborn child. In the end, my daughter was born without down syndrome but the concern that I had leading up to her birth really took its toll. keep your head up.

How is this possible? Someone could have aborted over this issue. Are these tests not accurate?

OP, stay strong.

I won't go into details but my daughter has an inherited genetic condition we had no prior knowledge of before conception. After she was born we were given a list of all the possible things that might affect her in her life. Some have, and she's had one serious surgery and a couple more elective ones to help. This condition does regularly kill, we luckily dodged a few of the bigger bullets, but still got hit with some body blows.

The point is, if we'd known early enough about all the scary shit, we probably wouldn't be blessed right now with a wonderful little 12 year old girl who is the brightest point of our lives. As parents you deal with things as they hit you and hope for the best. Pray if it helps you. Rely on friends and family to help you through. I hope things work out well for you and my thoughts are with you.

Edit: best of luck with the scan. Vibes duly sent!

I'm so sorry to hear this OP, you are in my thoughts. I'm a recent father myself and I can see how racking this is. I'm not religious but I'll send good vibes your way.

Well today is the day. Just waiting for the scan to see what's what. Cross those fingers and send the good vibes folks.

Nothing but good wishes and positive vibes for you and your family, OP!

Different situation, but when my wife was pregnant with our youngest (who is now 9), they determined she was at a very high risk for Down's. Performed an amnio on my wife and ruled it out, but I prayed like a sonofagun and offered up all sorts of crazy shit so long as it meant my little girl would be okay. Ruled it out, and we had a healthy little baby girl shortly thereafter.

I know it has to be beyond nerve-wracking right now. Hopefully, you get the all clear. Take care.

Generally the first test is just a measurement of fluid on the spine. After a couple of tests they come up with a '1 in x' chance of downs. I think if it is higher than 1 in 120 then it is classed as high risk and you are offered extra tests for more accurate results. The more accurate results tests usually have a high chance of causing miscarriage so few people actually have them.

The further tests are sometimes used in places that don't allow abortion as a loop hole way of aborting. But yes, I would imagine lots of peole have aborted due to a <1% chance their baby will have downs.

First time seeing this thread. I wish you all well. No matter the outcome, remain strong for your partner and would be child.

My wife's water broke 7 weeks early with our first child. She had to stay in the hospital a week and delay the birth because his lungs weren't strong enough. But at the week mark, they had to induce to prevent potential infection. He came out healthy, and he has GROWN. Might be an effect of the steroids they used to help the lungs.

I guess I'm sharing just to relate the nerves and fear that one can go through with a child in the womb. I'll be thinking of you, OP.

Best of luck. Just remember it's not 100% certain and don't give up hope. A relative got some disease and the doctors wanted her to abort the baby because he would have cerebral palsy, would guaranteed be a vegetable and die before in his teens, etc.

He ended up living to his 50s, outlived both parents, called my family every day for decades, remembered birthdays of random acquaintances and family members for insane lengths of time, and took great joy from even simple things. He was like a child, but it certainly didn't turn out like the doctors said.

that's horrible OP.

I can't offer any advice except lean on the professionals. Ask the doctors who you guys can talk to about this, because you feel like garbage. Doctors are very good at recommending that stuff, because they cannot help themselves.

Stay positive and try and get as much information as possible to deal with any negative outcomes. Good luck.

Well thank fuck for that.

Baby scan was perfect, with no issues detected. Growth is okay and specialist thinks it's extremely unlikely she'll be affected. We're not completely out of the danger zone (one more test in progress to confirm the status of the infection) but consultant (who was awesome) thinks we don't have anything to worry about.

Even gave us a load of 3D scans of baby (she looks like her brother).

Full on tears of relief from all the family here. What a rollercoaster.

Heartfelt thanks to all of you for the good vibes - they most assuredly did the trick.

Holy crap, I'm so happy for you. I've been following this thread for a bit but haven't posted. My wife and I are expecting our third child—our first girl—in July. I know exactly how you feel, nothing in the world compares to the feeling of being told your little one is healthy. It is the only thing in the world that matters. All the best to your family.

Good news, congrats OP.

I didn't want to post to jinx it by posting but the link posted in the thread seemed to indicate that it was just a 5% chance of the baby being affected so I thought you'd be fine.

I know that 5% probably looks like 500% to a terrified soon-to-be-parent, though.
