My qualifications were always that they'd have to fall into a dateable age range for Sam or Deanmostly Dean. I actually remember if Lauren Tom's character is dead or not, but she falls outside the age range.
There are also plenty of women on the show. It's just that the recurring ones that could potentially date Sam or Dean are usually killed off.
The thing about Korrasami if I remember correctly, is that there were people who (correctly) proclaimed it was underdeveloped (which is putting it lightly) and those who were too blind to recognize they hooked up at all in the end.

Oh I've already witnessed the meltdown of hardcore Keith x Lance fans on tumblr after the show runners were saying (as well as Keith's VA) saying that there would be more Keith and Allura interactions in S3 during the Wondercon panel.
Another one that I've seen and was wholly amused by are the diehard Johnlockers (John x Sherlock) after S4 aired earlier this year. The amount of people claiming queerbaiting or the show runners being homophobic and everything in between was legit like watching the Titanic sinking in slo-mo. I don't care for the pairing at all (I prefer Sherlock and Irene personally)
There are more, but those two are the most recent I've seen tumblr turn on in a blink of an eye.
I felt bad for Lin in Korra. They couldve at least let her get with Mako.
Oh yes, he Keith/Lance shippers who take their interaction as romance and Keith and Allura as underdeveloped and stretch the producer statements on representation and deviation from the old show. The worst part is them harassing the voice actors.
I kinda liked Sherlock/Janine even though it was fake, but yeah that's another extreme fandom.
To be fair (and serious), there's only one official canon: Tracer and Emily. Nothing else exists canon-wise at this point.

Ships have turned me off from some communities it can get a bit much, the Overwatch one was delicious salt when it was semi confirmed Mercy and Genji were together and not Pharah.
The meltdown over Spock and Uhura getting together in the new Star Trek movies. A bunch of slash fans, most white women, opposed to it because they wanted Kirk/Spock when it was really a cover for their racism. I remember them saying that Uhura assaulted him when they kissed, that she was too aggressive for him, and that he was forced into the relationship.
The mad H/Hr shippers ruined finding good H/Hr fanfiction for a while. Stories of Ron being an abuser and Weasley and JKR bashing were increased by 1000%.

Still see salty Onodera fans in the most random of anime/manga comment sections. When you argue that you feel like Nisekoi of all fucking mangas is "rushed" because your trash tier waifu lost you know you got issues.
Like it was clear as day what direction the manga/anime was going in but you had people get so invested in by far the most boring character imaginable. Onodera gets little to no character development, is a complete doormat, and her sister and mother are more interesting. How can you be best girl when you aren't even the best girl in your own family? Lots of dismissals of Chitoge because she is a "tsundere" archetype but she at least had a clear character arc. Although I have to say I enjoy her being called Gorilla all the time. Onodera isn't any less cliched and is clearly meant to be the traditional submissive sweet Japanese waifu archetype. There is also something to be said of the outright boring ending that would have resulted from a Onodera end. Chitoge? Married duel heads of mob families. Marika? Daughter of the police chief and son of yakuza together. Tsugumi? Badass espionage hijinks. Onodera? Lets take over the family sweets shop....wow how exciting.
Nisekoi was always a well executed but trashy harem manga full of cliche upon cliche so when it chose the most obvious route that it had clearly been building up to for fucking ever these creepy people lost their shit because they had literally fallen in love with a cartoon character. This wasn't a manga where there was any real doubt which direction things were going to go in past chapter 50 or so and if you have ever read a harem manga before it was clear by chapter 01. Onodera fan desperation got particularly annoying to read late in the manga's life because at some point you are just actively rooting for asspulls and bad writing in a series already full of asspulls and bad writing.
At some point if you hate the main girl of series that much maybe IDK stop reading it? There are plenty of better manga out there. The Onodera faction always seemed like the most overly invested creepy of the bunch and the most actively aggressive toward everyone else. I guess thats what happens when you choose Team Loser and slowly watch the inevitable drenched in your own salt and tears. At least Tsugumi and Marika were cool/fun! Fucking weirdos.

Honestly the thing in Bleach was kind of whatever. I assumed Renji x Rukia was really obvious given the plot of the Soul Society arc, it just never actually got expanded so the resolution of it came off as a complete out-of-nowhere despite the fact it wouldn't have been if it had been timed properly.
Rukia x Ichigo never really seemed to be a thing. I legit thought Rukia x Byakuya was more likely - I mean, Byakuya wasn't actually related to Rukia and adopted her because his dying wife who happened to look identical to Rukia told him to. It wouldn't be that far out of the blue if he happened to be into his wife's sister who looks just like her. The only particular way I saw Ichigo x Rukia was that he's a dude and she's a girl.

I mean, this is kind of an entire genre (the harem scenario), although to be fair, I don't think Ah My Goddess is actually gonna generate a whole lot of salt - it's pretty much 100% Belldandy, or at least 90%. The beginning starts off a little harem-y, but flattens out to the daily life hijinx relatively soon.
But yeah, Nisekoi and Naruto meltdowns were a thing to behold. The Overwatch one was just hilarious, the # of explanations people were trying to come up with to explain the gay away were truly something.
Also, I'm not so sure some small subdivision of Tumblr going off the walls (and incidentally, had no idea gay Jack is a thing - asexual maybe, but I don't think he displayed any real interest in either gender before this season) is grounds for a 'meltdown' on a similar level to the ones mentioned above.
Cap/Bucky (and Cap/Tony for that matter) is kind of its own beast among slash shippers. But that's kind of always been a pipe dream, or at least as soon as Sharon was introduced in Winter Soldier.

For a reverse example where most everyone was on the same page and the media itself threw a curveball before bouncing back, remember the bizarre romantic undertones between Cortana and Chief in Halo 4? That were somehow supposed to resonate in spite of, y'know, Cortana steadily going insane over the course of the plot due to mechanical failure?
How about the fact that Cortana is based off Dr. Halsey's brainscans. Dr. Halsey, aka Master Chief's mother figure?

But did they really? It almost like everything was made for laughs. And through the whole season it is a clear pairing without a contender that could realistically make a triangle or anything like that. Imagine a Harem anime, you'll just want to make all the fans happy so you let the joke play on repeat.
