This series is review-proof as far as I'm concerned. Dead Man's Chest has a 54% and I love that movie. So I'm still there on Thursday night for this one.

Bring Verbinski back with a new writer and I'm interested. I mean, if this were like 2010.

I seriously wonder why this series can't have more than 1 great movie. It's like each movie got worse than the last one but the 5th one may be better than the 4th one at least.

I like 2 and 3 a lot, some act like they're the worst movies ever. So yeah, eh, I don't really care or expected good reviews.

i'll check it out, I liked the first 2, and the third had some cool stuff. would be more hyped if Verbinski was back but Kon Tiki Hemlers looks to have done a much better job than the last awful director who took over the series.

i look to these movies for Jack Sparrow and massive over the top setpieces.

54%?! But that's the best one!

Unfortunate to see such bad reviews, but I'm still going to see it for myself. As long as it's better than Pirates 4, I'll be satisfied.

Those people are crazy, they are far from the worst movies ever. They may not be great, but not abysmal or anything like that.

And to conclude my ongoing rewatch thread from the other topic, I just saw 3 -- again, for the first time since theaters like the other two -- and yeah, good movie. 3>2>1.

I know how ridiculous that ranking will appear to folks, and I'll own it. 1 is decent, but a lot of the humor in these movies doesn't do anything for me, and 1 had the most. Couple that with my love for bigger scope/lore/etc, and a seriously improved Elizabeth in 3, and I arrive at this wonky conclusion.

Those are reasons I agree with your "wonky" conclusion.

It's such a shame where they went with this franchise, starting with the second one.

I know it has its defenders and it has some fun bits, but it's mostly an overly-convoluted, over-produced. poorly-paced mess.

I do not like the pacing of the 3rd movie and how long it was, made it such a drag to finish.

It has it's moments, but it's far from the best. Even the 2nd one is better.

Thankfully RT has 3 different scores to get a decent picture and all of them are put in the same place for convenience.

I went to see Alien: Covenant this weekend. I saw that it had a 72% on RT before going. Seems good, right? It also had an average rating of 6/10 on the same site. This indicates that while the majority of people liked the movie, they also didn't think it was that great. It was full of "eh, this is OK" reviews. Turns out that's a pretty accurate description of the movie.

IMDb settles around 7/10 for every blockbuster. If you think that matches up with the movie, you're only looking up movies that you like.
The thing is though, their tomato meter is front and center. That's what they highlight. So even if they have other means, it's not what most people see. And it ends up being the tomatometer, not a score, that's highlighted in these threads and later conversation, impacting people's opinion of the movie.

I don't see why people find it a better indicator than Imdb.

When I look at Imdb user score i usually get a pretty good indicator if the movie is worth watching or not.
Of course there are exceptions to this, and you have to let the score settle a bit, but I see it as a far better indicator, than how many critics liked it or didn't. I find it a shame when a good movie suffers for this because I usually want it to get a sequel if I like it.

The 3rd movie was always my favorite.

Elizabeth was so good in it and Keira was always my main draw.

The cliffhanger of Dead Man's Chest actually just pissed me off. I remember telling my brother as we left the theater that I almost expected an employee to come running down the aisle of the theater with a film reel apologizing for being late with the last half hour of the movie.

Turns out I was a little off. It wasn't a half hour of missing film. It was a bloated, meandering 3-hour shark-jumping mess missing.

Verbinski trilogy was amazing. 4 was awful and I'm not surprised by these reviews. I'm still a huge fan of the franchise though.

edit: And another movie that's only in 3D in cinemas here. Yup, can't watch it. Thanks to this shitty technology (it makes me vomit)! Fuck off!

edit2: The music is not by Hans Zimmer...what?

Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales proves that neither a change in directors nor an undead Javier Bardem is enough to drain this sinking franchise's murky bilge.

Ouch.

Aren't Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley in this? Why are the discount versions being shown on that poster instead?

I'd like to know this, too. Last I heard at least Orlando was confirmed to be in it, but now there's total silence on that front. Did he drop out?

Really enjoyed the first POTC - came out of nowhere [no expectations etc] and went on to re-invent the pirate film genre.

Talking of DMC - this has to be the best introduction to a hero ever. In the history of best introductions to a hero ever.)

First Appearance of Jack Sparrow on Dead man's Chest

Love it when the musical score kicks in.
Still remember how much this killed at the midnight screening. Overall, that showing is still one of the most fun times I've ever had in theaters, crowd was so hyped and with the movie.

I also love how a piece of wood from the crate falls into the water and comes off like the crow carcass

It's still a Bruckheimer flick, you can't expect good reviews. But it's the last movie he made with Disney so it's good. Maybe they can reboot the franchise without Depp and Bruck.

This is disappointing, but expected. I enjoyed the first three movies a lot but the last one was pure shit. The new characters sucked, the music was bland and wasn't even orchestrated like the other ones (cheap move), and the quality felt like a straight-to-DVD sequel than a full-fledged Pirates film. This is shaping up to be more of the same. I don't even feel like watching it.

Everyone was hyped at Barbosa being alive.

If I'm remembering correctly, they didn't even tell the other actors it was him, so they could get real surprised reactions.

Yeah, the friend I've been watching the movies with told me they told the actors it was Zoe Saldana who was returning, haha.

This series needs to be put out of its misery. Each new entry just hurts its reputation more and more.

Did this series have a good reputation? Like...the Transformers series has a better reputation than Pirates of the Caribbean.

The first Pirates movie is better than the first Transformers movie.

Both have some pretty killer CG, though.
