Pokemon Ultra Moon and Ultra Sun for Nintendo 3DS

I've retired my 3DS, whether Nintendo intended me to or not. Disappointing.

I'll totally tune out of any E3 coverage Nintendo have for this as well. I'm just not interested.

If you are not interested in 3D Mario, Pokken, Mario Kart, Zelda, Arms, Splatoon or Fire Emblem, you probably never had a Nintendo console in the first place.

I don't understand.
I literally just bought Pokemon Sun 3ds for my son last month. Why another game on the same platform with the same name. What does Ultra even means ?

Because the only legendary they have left to give out is Marshadow. Traditionally, they start releasing new games when the events start piling up.

So we're never getting another mainline Pokemon?
If you don't think a more portable switch without a dock and sold at a lesser price isn't coming eventually you are a fool. Nintendo has already stated they want to have multiple versions of this hardware.

I think he's mainly referring to tuning out any Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon news.

Apart from X and Y, Pokémon games have always had a 3rd expanded version of the original duo of games, which add in new features, story elements, better post game content, etc. on the same handheld as the original duo. So Emerald was the 3rd version of Ruby and Sapphire, and all 3 came out on GBA.

Pokemon Company is always frustrating with this stuff. Makes enough sense I guess, but I was really hoping it'd also be on Switch. Was also hoping for only 1 updated version, doing the split games again for third version is... tiresome I guess. I'll always have that 'I should buy that other one to complete the set' feeling nagging at me about it, but probably won't do it.

On the up side, I'm glad to see them expanding on Sun Moon. Alola was a great region, S/M were great games, and I'm looking forward to revisiting.

Edit:
Just to make it clear, the official site explicitly says that these are like Crystal, Emerald and Platinum rather than like BW2:

I'm a bit disappointed since I wanted to see trainer Lillie, though.
Oh? That is a bit depressing... was hoping for at least a story/world continuation, the games seem ripe for it. That whole description sounds sadly barebones... but I'm sure they have a few surprises up their sleeves.

HELL YES 3RD VERSIONS! I mean CRAP NO SWITCH VERSION.

I dunno how to feel about this announcement. I've been waiting five long years for a 3rd version pokemon game. But I also wanted that game to be in HD.

"Ultra Sun and Moon will feature an alternate storyline with new creatures"
according to Kotaku

this is the most baffling announcement I think Nintendo's (ya ya.. the Pokemon company, etc.) ever made.

The official site makes it clear it's a third version. And the "alternate story" fits with games like Emerald or Platinum, which had "alternate stories" to RS and DP.

This is the third version basically. I'm really excited if B2W2 are anything to go by.
also Gen VI will continue to remain worse gen with no third game to fall back on lmao

There aren't 66 million people with 3DS handhelds tho. Just because there are 66 million units sold, doesn't mean 66 million individuals bought them.

Or want to still play on them or even have them still.

Baffling announcement for sure. Gonna skip this iteration, I just dont want to look at that shitty ass 3ds screen anymore. It's so ugly it constantly breaks any kind of immersion for me. I'm happy for those who still enjoys their 3ds though.

Following this announcement, Nintendo stock just crossed $40usd/share. The last time it was above $40 was 2010.

'Ultra' sounds like minor updates - what do they even do with them?

[wishfulthinking] Maybe Nintendo want to keep the stars announcement for E3?

[/wishfulthinking ]

Either way it's more than the 2.75 million Switches that are out there. It's still a bit too new.

Well if that's the case, why isn't 3DS specifically mentioned in this official Pokemon Company press release???: http://pokemon.gamespress.com/releases/2434/new-pokmon-games-announced-via-pokmon-direct

During Pokémon Direct, viewers also saw the first footage from the newest titles in the Pokémon series, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon. Two new Pokémon forms were shown resembling that of the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo and Lunala. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon have been powered up with new additions to the story and features from Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon are scheduled to release worldwide on 17 November 2017—more information about the games will be revealed later this year.

Are they going to officially announce the systems "later this year"?

so this basically is Stars, it's just two games instead of one, and on the 3DS instead of the Switch
woohoo

Have to agree with all the comments about backwards compatibility. The "lazy Game Freak's always late to the party" sentiment has always been overblown, because in every case, the game was playable on both old and new systems, so they could get keep the old userbase happy for a bit longer without missing out on shiny new console money. Game Freak gained everything and lost absolutely nothing (except internet points) from waiting a bit before fully committing to a new system.

That's why so many people belived in something cross-platform, and are still holding out for something Switch related. With the cushion of backwards compatibility out of the picture, most figured that Game Freak would do what they've always done and cover their bases with both markets somehow. If Ultra Sun/Moon are indeed 3DS exclusive and there's no immediate Switch plans, then it's a strange move by Game Freak that pretty much flies in the face of what they've always done.

I'm kind of wishing now that I just went full, "We won't get Stars on Switch" in the Direct thread, people calling the notion ridiculous would now have a nice turnaround lol. But I fell for the rumor (more like accepted it since it's been so long) and figured there's no way they wouldn't. I should know Game Freak's MO by this point, I mean, I've only followed them since I was a kid.

Wow really lots of bad news for the Switch recently huh .. is it a sign of something?

  • Port of a Wii U Pokemon game that no one s keen on
  • 3DS game instead of a Switch one (what is Nintendo thinking)
  • No complete version of Fifa 18
  • Nintendo still focused on 3DS instead of Switch (Direct had little to explore on the Switch)

Yeah, Nintendo is totally doomed.

Yeah, this is weird. They made sure to specify that Sun and Moon were exclusive to the 3DS at the time of their announcement:

It makes perfect sense.

"I've retired my 3DS, therefore I'll tune out coverage of Pokemon Ultra S/M as they are 3DS games."

Easy as pie to understand.

You are interpreting too much into a driveby post. E3 is about Switch. He retired his 3DS. As long as he wasn't expecting and caring about Nintendo at E3 solely for Pokemon on Switch, he isn't making alot of sense.

I'm into all those except Arms, but even so there needs to be more.

Pokken is already more.
