Etrian Odyssey V, Strange Journey Redux, and Radiant Historia 3DS coming to NA/EU

Radiant Historia looks fine to me, not sure what the fuss is about. Is it just because one of the characters has longer hair?

Not really, it's more that the style has changed. Personally I much prefer the original one, probably enough to not pick this one up.

I don't have played the game, but her original design was so cool (and short haired girls are not so common):

Well, voice acting or not, the entire story stuff Atlus has been pushing with Untold (and now, apparently, EO5) is some hot trash. Original EO was great. It didn't lead you by the nose. You explored the dungeon because it was there. The small encounters along the way or in the town were sparse enough to be interesting. The focus was clearly gameplay. Now it seems like you need to disable this, ignore that and bla bla bla just to get something roughly approximating the original game.
Or just play classic mode, which is included.

Glad that Deep Silver seems to finally be stepping up their game. Good for european fans! Hopefully you get them at the same time as us.

It's been too long, I thought I remembered her using bows..
I might be confusing her with Natalia from Tales of the Abyss :p

I'm experiencing cognitive dissonance right now and don't know what to do anymore. On the hand I really want to buy SJR, but on the other hand I think the art is horrible and want Kaneko back...

This sums up what being a Megaten fan nowadays feels like quite well.

Uhh, did Radiant Historia really sell more than Strange Journey in the west? That doesn't sound right. Pretty sure it didn't in Japan, but I might be wrong.

The lack of English VA is even weirder considering the main characters are actually American. Oh well, I guess I don't really care that much.

SMTIV sold like over a million copies worldwide, so I kind of doubt RH or EOV will match mainline SMT in sales, but that person can carry on living in fantasy cuckoo land all they like.

Similar here, which is strange because Strange Journey is one of my favorite games of all time.

I just feel like every change in this version is missing the point entirely. Not just the artwork.

Totally in on EOV though.

SMT4's sales numbers are nowhere near a million. Last I remember it was around 100k in the US and maybe 250k-300k in Japan? I doubt the rest of the world adds another 600k on top of that. Hopefully someone can clarify with actual numbers.
From what I remember it also did rather well for an SMT game (maybe because of the special deal in combination with Fire Emblem?), so I'm sure the numbers for Strange Journey are quite a bit lower.

Such a quick announcement for Europe, very pleased to hear that, thanks Deep Silver!

Now I don't have to spend months agonizing over these wondering if they'll come to Europe. Hopefully this also means they won't be far off from the NA release dates. Maybe even 2017 for EOV? Please?

They're also confirming Physical and Digital as well as Fall 2017 for EOV, happy days!

Can anyone outline the changes made to SJ? I'm currently in the middle of playing it on DS, and I'd love to continue doing so if the 3DS port doesn't seem definitively superior.

Atlus hasn't revealed that much outside of what's immediately apparent via trailers, but we know this so far:

-Added demons not present in the original
-New character, Alex, who seems to come with a completely new scenario and ending tied to her
-The game has been remade in what seems to be the SMT4 engine, but retaining its first person view
-All story events are voiced (not in english though)
-Redone art, including portraits for non plot relevant NPCs

If anyone knows other details feel free to add them. I've read a couple of people saying they're adding save everywhere, but I haven't seen any official info about it.

+ Save anywhere
+ Difficulty options
+ What looks like event illustrations (although this could just be the OP used in screens/trailers)
+ New music
+ New skills

Save anywhere was talked about during the reveal stream and on the official website.

Any reworks to the mechanics like the demon alignment system or how skill passed down?

Ah so save everywhere was actually mentioned.

Remake confirmed garbage.

No but I hope it's optional... Please

There was something about "new growth options," but I don't think either of those things have been discussed in detail.

In the original, demon alignment was indicated by name colour, and the same is true for what we've seen of DSJ, so that system is still in at least.

I hope the save anywhere saves are suspend saves and not actual ones, the dungeon design of SJ has very well placed Terminals that promote tension while not being too far apart.

3DS is just rocking when it comes to RPGs heh. Probably wouldn't go through with it, but I might check out Radiant Historia again, through I would like to be able to switch to the original art portraits.

Save anywhere isn't going to do much to the real difficult part of SJ, the final bosses on Neutral and Chaos.

Wait, what?!?

Are there screens or video of this?

This is merely speculation, but it doesn't look like the Etrian Odyssey IV engine, and the dungeons seem to have this particular lighting that's reminiscent of SMT4. Not to mention the UI is nearly identical in places.

My mobile browser is stupid and I can't get image URLs, but check out some examples in this gallery http://www.siliconera.com/2017/04/0...rney-shows-new-character-alex-new-demon-amon/

Yes the UI looks very similar to SMTIV, but the actual dungeon don't look that much better than the original DS version. Dunno...I did kinda hope the texture, lighting and details of the environment woulda been improved.

I'll agree that it doesn't look too impressive on screenshots, but I think you're underestimating how bad the visuals in OG SJ hold up haha. This is a massive improvement in my eyes, and I expect it to look better in person like most 3DS games.

Hopefully they'll release some dungeon crawling gameplay video soon, I need to see it in motion.

I basically agree with you, but I thought EOV was a return to that style of immersive make-your-own-story dungeon crawling? And voice acting choices are just for their in-battle grunts and stuff from what I've seen. I'll probably turn them off anyways, I'm not a big fan of voice acting in games.

Just heard the eu confirmation so can allow myself to get excited for radiant and strange journey. Still disappointed about the redesigns for historia but think I will manage fine either way.

Is that the case for the oversea release? Think I recall that the original art was part of the limited edition for the JP release.

Yes, the original portraits (for the main characters) is available as DLC in the Japanese limited edition of the game (to be sold separately later on as well).

As is the norm, this DLC will likely be released separately in the West as well.
